The cute cameo was by the director of RRR Mr. S S Rajamouli who’s worked with Prabhas in the earlier blockbuster Bahubali

Ahwatthama was not a God. Only Krishna is. Ashwatthama was a great warrior in Mahabharat. He was very talented and among the best but he participated in some shady actions towards the end of Mahabharata. His side lost the war and his father died in it. He couldn't accept defeat and walk away and wanted revenge.
He killed the Pandwas' sons in their sleep. Later on he targeted the last heir still in womb. Krishna (considered an Avatar of Lord Vishnu) cursed him because of this act. So he is to be shunned away from civilization and to roam in the forest till the end of Kaliyuga. ( current epoch)

That war at the starting is the battle of kurukshetra from the Mahabharata (one of the ancient and longest epics in Hindu mythology). It was written thousands of years ago but has more political intrigue, betrayal, action, spirituality , questions on truth, righteousness, family, war, etc than say the "game of thrones" or lord of the rings. I hope someone someday has the budget to make a proper film on the Mahabharata.
Hindu religion has 3 main supreme beings and rest of the Gods are mostly avatars or demi-gods. Even Buddha is an avatar of Lord Vishnu. In the starting that was lord Krishna which is another avatar of lord Vishnu. In Hindu mythology it is believed that the last incarnation of Vishnu is Kalki who will bring an end to this world and usher in the age of truth again. In Hinduism time is cyclical and never ending. There are 4 ages that keep on flowing in a cyclical loop. Creation and Destruction are inter-related being the core theme. So title alludes to the baby that is yet to be born who is supposedly going to be the avatar and bring about an end to the world so that the universe can reset again and start from the age of truth or satyayuga.
This is just a very brief and rough overview of the idea. Although it's much more complex than this

Wow, this really does clarify a lot about the film. I really do appreciate this summary as someone who isn't familiar with the religion/culture. Thanks so much!

It is not mythology it’s history there are astronomical evidences
Next , Kalki is not born for destruction but to save the world from the Kali demon ( do not confuse with the Kaali goddess ) where the immorality of the world reaches to point in of no hope which is mentioned in Kalki purana scripture

Absolutely loved this breakdown. Kalki 2898 AD is an excellent film that tried something unique and difficult by combining history, mythology, dystopian future, sci-fi and fantasy. To pull of such a movie in a fantastic way deserves a salute to the director. Man i already watched it 2 times and planning to watch again.

It is tough to understand the references as they are based on Hindu religion, specifically the Mahabharata, a very famous Hindu epic. However, the average Indian might not have in-depth knowledge of it, as most people grow up hearing stories casually from family or during visits to temples. There is no formal, widespread education on Hindu religious texts for the average person, who is often more focused on daily survival, securing better jobs, making money, and taking care of family responsibilities. Despite these challenges, many people do grow up listening to stories from elders. Nowadays, TH-cam and the internet provide great resources for anyone looking to educate themselves on Hindu mythology.

They made sure to glorify Muslim rulers and sidelined our glorious Hindu history

If Part 1 is this excellent, then imagine the potential of part two especially with Supreme Yaskin getting involved with the bow that can kill Gods.
Edit: For additional context, the weapon(bow )Supreme Yaskin held is the same weapon that Arjuna, a demigod(from the past, the one who used blue lasered arrows) used. And that was countered by Karna(previous incarnation of Bhairava). The weapon (bow/stick) Karna/Bhairava had is equally powerful as well. The one who holds it cannot be defeated. So when Arjuna and Karna fought in the past, its like immovable object vs unstoppable force.

16:03 they break character a couple of times to pander to the audience. Once is this scene you are referring to where a director from a different movie is telling the lead actor that he will lock him up for 5 more yrs to do another movie with him. Check out the Baahubali movies - worth it. The other time is when they refer to the lead as having a lot of “rebel fans” or some such because he is known as the rebel star.

Spoilers**. That character cameo at 16.00 you were talking about is SS Rajamouli, the director of RRR. Who prior to RRR did a fantastic 2 part movie franchise called 'Baahubali' with Prabhas (the Bhairava role actor), which is the highest-grossing movie in India of all time even to this day. It is a bigger hit than RRR. So SS Rajamouli and Prabhas worked solely on 'Baahubali' for over half a decade, that's why the inside joke of 5 years and 10 years. If you like RRR and Kalki, you have to watch Baahubali 1 n 2.
    Loved this review btw!

The de-aging vfx was not good at all. It looked like a video game character whenever he spoke and the eyes were ridiculously large looking like a cartoon. They really should have gone with red chillies (Indian vfx company) for that part instead of DNEG.
Kalki 2898 AD is the pride of Indian Cinema and Telugu Cinema. One word review: MINDBLOWING.
Do not miss it at any cost.
I hope Kalki surpasses every Indian movie produced so far including RRR, Dangal, Jawan, Pathaan, Baahubali 2, KGF 2, Animal and becomes the most successful Indian film without inflating box office collections. Absolutely mindblowing except some unnecessary cringe masala and cringe comedy with Bhairava in the first half. Kamal Haasan part is pure horror. The way they have imagined landscapes, environments, weapons, vehicles, powers, Mahabharata scenes is truly exceptional and spectacular. My one suggestion to Nag Ashwin is to explore the Complex society and the outside world more in depth because on the surface it looks like everyone is doing well enough even though they are starving for food, water, clean oxygen and they have just stuck some neon signs randomly on Indian alleyways and streets because that's how cyberpunk movies do it. Anyone who says it is merely a copy of Star Wars, Dune, Mad Max, MCU deserve to drink Kali's tears lol. Excited for Kalki 2 more than I ever was for Brahmastra 2. Prabhas and Deepika Padukone are good but Amitabh Bachchan is the MVP. Wow. Disha Patani's part is simply waste. Roxxie could have still been used to show Bhairava the luxuries and abundance of the Complex without that cringe song. Also, unnecessary writing mistakes like superhuman Ashwatthama suddenly not being able to lift Sumathi up should not happen. I wish they would give Shree Krishna better look. No yellow angavastram or armor or jewels or mukut. Just a white cloth and a head band makes him look like a Greek hero. Personally I would have loved to see Shree Krishna blue instead of fair-skinned or dark-skinned because that's how we all grew up watching him in all images.
Deserves to be watched atleast twice.
PS. For non-Indians and Karna (son of Sun God Surya) fans watching this, Karna was not more powerful than Arjuna. Karna is an antagonist and an adharmi in the Mahabharata who was jealous of Arjuna and committed many evil deeds and suffered for his karma and choosing the wrong side against the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Shree Krishna. Period. But he is not a cheeranjeevi (immortal) like Ashwatthama. How has he reborn or reincarnated remains to be seen. Note that according to some, Karna pushing Arjuna's chariot back is a fake story and Ashwatthama surrendered the mani himself.

Mahabharata a godly battle, fought during the 8th Avatar (incarnation) of lord Vishnu, i.e Krishna's period in this world. There are 10 avatars of the god, who come to the world in each of the 4 yugas/ages ( each yuga is a period from a creation to its destruction ) to defeat the absolute evil . And this movie is based on the arrival of the prophesized 10th avatar of the god, Kalki, in the future, during the end of this ongoing yuga, Kali. Hence it's a mixture of sci fci as it's set in distance future plus the prophecy of spirituality.

LOL. Amitabh was great, no doubt but Prabhas is the main pull of the movie. Saying the movie would not have become popular if Amitabh had not been in this movie is straight-up blasphemy. You can check collections of previous movies of Amitabh and Prabhas. Prabhas is the biggest superstar in the last decade. Amitabh is a legend but Prabhas is easily the biggest superstar right now.
