I am soooo glad to see someone else eat the veggies straight from the garden and say, "a little dirt on it" I always say, " Momma said it's just a little dirt and dirt don't hurt!" hahah LOVE your channel, you two are amazing!
Happy to say my garden is thriving. Lettuces, sweet peas, spinach, kale, collards, chard, cabbage, green beans, short day onions no bulbing yet, tomatoes, broccoli, and bell peppers. Garlic hasn't sprouted yet. In 9b Central Florida.
Please don’t complain about your lovely weather LOL where I live the temps have been around -36 below 0 Celsius. Plus all the snow...laughing we expect this weather and our winter has been mild until this past week. We don’t even have a lot of snow comparatively. Your onions look great but we will wait til spring to plant anything outside. Have a great gardening season.
It's all relative. It's been harsh here compared to what we normally see this time of year, but we understand that we don't have it near as bad as the folks up north do. Thanks for watching!
I feel for you having the cold weather and winds. I on the prairies in Canada we are at -38 f with a wind but I'm well condition to it! I would not handle the hot summers you experience. On day like this after a 50 minute morning walk I like having a cup of coffee and watch your video's and plan my garden. Thank you for all the tips I always can learn something from you.
Just watching your show passing the time until we can get back in the garden in late May. Tonight it's -22 F and snowing. On the bright side, we don't got the pest or disease pressures you all got.
Some onion growers recommend trimming the tops of seedlings down to 3 inches before planting to encourage bulb growth. If you have already addressed this in another video I apologize. I am attempting to grow an old variety from France called Roscoff. I enjoy your informative videos.
I know the title said onions, but those turnip greens were the show-stealer! Turnip is my favorite greens, I'm really interested in that All-Top variety!
Yes Sir, about this coming up Friday. Zone 7B here in southern Arkansas. My onions over wintered good until now. Had a couple times it got down to 20. But Friday is looking like low teens possibly 11 degrees. If I’ve paid attention to you at all that’s an onion killer. My plan... water good before. I’m raking up a bunch of my Oak leaves that are left to cover the rows with and then a sheet of plastic over that. Anything you might add? I have 4 rows of onions, 1 of leeks, and 1 of elephant garlic.
Sounds about right. Covering with a row cover fabric would be ideal, but can't get those things locally and would take time to ship. Keep the soil wet and mulch as much as you can. You might see some damage, but hopefully they'll make a comeback.
We’re still waiting for our cauliflowers to head...I think we were a bit behind with our winter planting....but they are growing nicely! What do you spray your all tops with?
I’ve been wanting to direct sow some poppy seeds but it has been windy and rainy so I’m not sure if that will work out. I don’t want my seeds to drown or get washed/blown away. This is tricky business.
If you look around the videos on our channel, you'll see several in the greenhouse. We did one a few weeks ago when we started our peppers in the greenhouse.
zone 7b/8. Harvesting collards, lettuce, carrots. Beets and spinach looking good. Onion plants were looking good, but have started developing a lot of spots on the leaves. I see a little on your onion plants. Could this be too much rain and\or cold? Should I be planning a backup crop?
My goodness, how long did it take you to get to where you don't have any weeds in your garden??? You got me planting onions this year! Thank you for your content, I feel like I'm learning from a PRO!!
Doesn't take long. These plots are only two years old. We do have weeds, but we try to eliminate them before they go to seed. Doing that, along with cover cropping and using tarps, will drastically reduce the weed seed bank. If you can reduce the amount of weed seeds in your soil, that makes gardening life much easier.
That's a nice head of cauliflower. I have my onion seeds started but the garden itself is under a foot (or more) of snow with more on the way. No row by row show this week?
What do you spray your turnip greens with to keep the bugs from devastating them. Also it would be great to see how you do your greens, for us northern transplants.
This time of year we usually spray a rotation of Neem Oil + B.t. and Horticultural Oil + B.t.. For the greens, we just wilt them in bacon grease, add a little water and simmer until tender. Pretty simple stuff.
Hey Greg and Travis! Got my potatoes in the mail today. I’m in mid central Georgia and won’t be planting my potatoes for a few weeks. Should I leave them in the bag you shipped them in or should I take them out and spread them out? I have a dark cool basement to store them in. THANKS SO MUCH! 👍
Travis everything looks great. Do you watch Black Gumbo? I think it was his latest garden tour, it may have been January's, that he said he had discovered that even tho he disliked cooked turnips he likes turnips french fried. Try it, YOU might like it.
We do "fry" ours a bit when cooking. We put a significant amount of bacon grease in the bottom of the pan and "fry" them to wilt them before adding some water and letting them simmer a bit.
I planted some onions and garlic and it has been raining and cold and I haven’t given them any fertilizer. Is it too late to feed them?. It rained last night and it is 31 degrees now. This weather is so unpredictable. Will the onions and garlic still grow bulbs? This is my first time planting it. I’ve purchased the 20-20-20 fertilizer but as I said haven’t put any out. What should I do?
Same here, I'm in zone 7b what zone are you in? I've been wondering the same. We've got rain in the forecast here for days, then they're talking snow by next Sunday 🥶❄️
On the onions you thinned a question because mine are about that far apart. Was it really needed to thin them or was it because you wanted the green onions? I do not not have as many as you and was hoping I do not have to thin them down to get nice size ones.
@@gardeningwithhoss Thanks for the response. I planted my TX legends late. About mid December. Just hoping there is enough time so they get to a good size. Again thanks.
Do you think my cabbage and broccoli I have in the garden under plastic will survive the following weather described? It is really cold and windy here in SE Missouri we are expecting snow today and some below zero temps with highs only in the teens. We don't usually get this cold for this long.
We won't know until this year. The round short-day onions always store pretty well for us, 3-4 months at least. The flatter onions and red onions don't store as well. White onions store well.
No, because it empties and lays flat when you turn off the water. So there's not really anything inside there to freeze. Also, having it buried insulates it as well.
I use an app called "Weather Underground" that shows the sunset time and sunset time every day. It also calculates the day length based on this information.
Besides the fish emulsions and legume inoculants, no. I've used quite a few of the "biologicals" over the years -- companies send them to us for us to try. I honestly can't tell they ever do anything. If I would have seen any good results, I would have certainly added that product. So I'm a little skeptical.
Well, I threw caution to the wind and planted my taters yesterday... today we have gotten like 3 inches of rain. :( They were predicting 1... and it's still pouring. Started a bunch of stuff in the greenhouse yesterday as well... it is of course fine... but man this weather is just crazy. Was planning on picking some collards this evening and putting them in the pot, but not gonna wade in the mud to pick them at this point.
@@gardeningwithhoss Yep my taters are fine... planted them last Friday then it poured rain for about 24 hours... almost 5 inches... but I went out there today and all up and down the rows the ground is cracking... a sure sign of things to come. I stretched them seeds a little farther than normal (planted smaller pieces)... I purchased 10 lbs, and I planted 100 row feet (1 plant per foot 3 inches from the emmiters... close to the water but not on top of it just in case I decide to use it)... I planted some of them pieces people claim don't have no eyes on them... I'm willing to bet I get a full stand in the end... sometimes you just have to use the force to determine where them eyes are gonna develop. Only a jedi gardner can pull that off. ;)

I know the title said onions, but those turnip greens were the show-stealer! Turnip is my favorite greens, I'm really interested in that All-Top variety!
It's a good one. We've had many customers who don't grow purple tops anymore because they like the greens on these much better.
Harvested the last of the carrots from fall, Just starting leeks, bunching onions, and Herbs this weekend...Itching to start those summer crops
It's -2 at noon with a windchill of -21 in the land of 10,000 lakes. It's been a very easy winter up until now.
We've heard that from a lot of folks up north. Warmer than normal up there, and much colder than normal down here.
We Love your Channel
Thanks Marc!
You need to have some mustard in your pocket if you're going to eat onions in the garden! You remind me so much of my dad. He loved his garden.
😜
I was thinking about not even planting any onions this year. Now that I saw this video, I'm reconsidering ;)

Usually rotate Neem Oil + B.t. or Horticultural Oil + B.t. this time of year.

Those spots could be blight. Probably a result of the cold and wet conditions we've been having.

Is it possible to over water winter plants? Never seen dry soil in winter.
Sure it is. Onions can take plenty of water, but have seen situations where it was so wet that some of them rotted.
What do you spray your turnip greens with to keep the bugs from devastating them. Also it would be great to see how you do your greens, for us northern transplants.

They'll still make bulbs, although maybe small ones. If you can catch a break in the wet and cold weather, definitely feed them.
Is it too late now to grow onions from seed in NW GA? Zone 7b?
Yes. But if you can find some plants, you might still have a shot at some alright sized onions.
On the onions you thinned a question because mine are about that far apart. Was it really needed to thin them or was it because you wanted the green onions? I do not not have as many as you and was hoping I do not have to thin them down to get nice size ones.
You don't have to thin them. We do want to give them plenty of room, but we plant them thick mainly so we can get the green onions.

Some folks use blankets. Not a bad idea if you have some extras.

Have not ever dehydrated them. We usually just eat them and give away the extras.
So now you only add ammonia sulfate to them The onions.so if you have some smaller onions could you still pump the 20/20/20
You could still use the 20-20-20 as well. They just aren't going to need as much P and K once they get going.
How does Plethora store? Not too many good-storing short days...

No, because it empties and lays flat when you turn off the water. So there's not really anything inside there to freeze. Also, having it buried insulates it as well.
