Joe, that is a challenge. Some trees have branches that are just too far out of reach to get access too. For those, you would be limited on how much you can use branch/bud characteristics for winter identification. I usually carry a pair of binoculars with me to help see branches and buds of taller trees. Sometimes that helps out.
You mentioned looking for leaves on the ground, but being careful not to confuse leaves that blew in from another tree. Wouldn’t it e evidence against a certain type of tree (reason to suspect it was not that type) if there were a lot of leaves, but none of that kind? In other words, the absence of leaves would be suspicious.

How do you guys get your branches to identify the tree? Ive found most under the tree have been dead a while and dont show as good of sign

Yes, good point. Not finding leaves of a certain species is a very good clue too!
