This is very good stuff. For anyone willing to listen trees, plants, shrubs and grass are smarter than us. You don't survive for millions of years doing stupid stuff. Yet most of what of modern horticultural "practices" are just that.

I understand painting or coating a cut has been shown to generally be ineffective. But is there any research being done to try to develop a coating that helps a tree protect itself after being cut? Perhaps an anti microbial liquid or something of that nature, similar to an anti bacterial a human might use right after a cut to help protect the wound?

Do you know of any research showing a correlation between the decrease in nesting of birds in trees because of over-thinning or lions tailing. Are there any tree experts looking into how different pruning techniques impact bird nesting etc.?

Might sound silly but: does topping reduce the growth of the (base or trunk) tree?

Of course it may be better to relocate or bury the power lines instead of screwing up a perfectly healthy tree. You have already killed enough trees for the poles. In this day and age we should have a better way to supply power to our homes. Especially in areas of high risks from storms weighing down of snow or high winds. Underground cables seem to work well in some parts of the country and they’re not the eyesore of overhead poles.

Some newer developments have buried lines. It would cost too much to bury already setup lines and would take a very long time in someplace like and old established neighborhood.
