Keep Your Heels Up! Rookie Mistake #11
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 20 ธ.ค. 2024
- This is a mistake I see many skaters, beginner and more experienced, commit. If you're dropping your heels when you skate (mainly on your rear foot), you're missing out on a lot of pop, power and control.
Let me know which tricks you’d like to learn in the comments. Thanks for watching.

Not skating everyday makes me forget a lot of these points. I think at some point skaters realize these tips subconsciously from skating a lot. This series has helped me out a lot being in and out of skating. Hearing these ideas out loud would have benefited me a lot in my early days so keep ‘em coming!
This series is iconic
I’m just happy it’s been useful to so many skaters.
Push up on toes before squatting down, that's a good advice to make your pop higher, thanks. Cuz sometimes when i struggle to get more pop, i lose it all, no matter what trick it is: ollie, shuv, flip.
It’s weird to time, when you first start adding it to your technique. But, once it clicks, you’ll have to remember not to do it, when you skate something small.
very cerebral take on what I need to be working on. awesome video.
You should be a counselor at Woodward. I attended Woodward PA all the way back in 1990 when it was in its early days. Way before skate tutorials were even a thing. The sponsored "teachers" were pretty clueless, and it was STILL amazing
I’ve been a couple times, as a guest skater, filming and hanging with the kids. Fun place. It’s tough though. That would be a big commitment.
Glad to see more shredders taking it to TH-cam. Good stuff

Stated skating in march at 29 y.o. you helped me alot Norman. Much love from Germany
Glad to hear these videos are helping you. Thanks for watching, and good luck on your journey. Skating is one-of-a-kind!
duuuude, that example 360 flip was cleaner that my disches after washing 🔥
😂😂😂🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
This does come up a lot in different sports, and its because if you look at basically any other mammals legs, the equivalent of the "heel" never even touches the ground for them, it's more like a second knee. Thanks for the pointer man 🤘🏻
Always made that observation when looking at dogs, cats, deer…etc. cheers!
oh shit didn't even think about that!!!
Bro your pop is insane!
Thanks 🙏🏾
Can you do one about falling and bailing? For example, let's say I want to frontboard a 9-stair rail at the local skatepark (Hollenbeck Park). In the process, I worked my way up to boardsliding smaller lower rails then worked my way up to higher and longer slides on a flat bar and small 3 stair rails where there is a low risk of getting hurt and if I do fall it would be minimal damage. Now comes the moment where I feel confident to take it to the 9-stair rail. At this point you have done all the work, but you still don't feel confident. Let's say at the first or second try I take a huge slam which in turn destroys my confidence. Am I making a rookie mistake by not pushing through and taking the slams necessary in order to figure out how to land it on a bigger longer rail? I know this series is about rookie-level mistakes but I feel like this applies to beginner to intermediate as we struggle to level up to higher bigger obstacles, gaps, stairs, etc. Love your videos! Anything helps!
I’ve had a bailing video in mind for a while. It’s one of the most important skills to have, in order to learn more difficult tricks. FS board slides are tough to escape from. The bigger the rail, the more you just hope you make it to the end. I’ll keep this on the list.
Eyes plays a huge part in skateboarding. Not a lot of ppl talk about it n how important it is to know where to look before, during, and as u land a trick .
This is true. I made entire video about that, earlier in this series.
Great series, thank you. 🙏🏼
I've been skateboarding since '94 and this didn't occur to me until this video. I'm going to put this to practice this week.
Best of luck!
Been figuring this out recently! Pushing your heels up and knees forward also makes your upper body subconsciously straighten more to compensate for balance rather than hinging forward too much. It helps you jump straighter upward when you pop.
thank you
All of these are big ones.
Proper posture
I literally just noticed this two days ago and it has def helped
Land my kickflips cause of this video. Thanks!!!!
Agreed! Next session is on Friday! Still trying to get my Ollie higher. So will be for sure keeping this in mind. Small steps towards the larger goal. Peace
That’s how you make progress! I hope this gives you a boost 👊🏾
Thank you 😊
You’re welcome!
Such a good point that no other truck tips cover
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Does this apply to transition?
My heels are off the board for transition. But, I don’t try to keep them up or anything. Honestly, I’m not the best help in this department though. My skills are basic at best on the ramps.
Very high kick flip and tre flip brother I wish I can do that high thank you
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Good stuff bro!
Thank you 🙏🏾
Don't know if this would be a Rookie Mistake video per se, but could you maybe do a video for taller skaters? I'm 6'8" and have been skating for about a year and a half. It's made some stuff really easy, but a lot of stuff really hard. I don't know how tall you are, so I don't know what your insight into this would look like. But you're probably my favorite skate channel and any help at all would be awesome! Love you homi!
I can tackle this a bit.
Big feet too! U feel like i need to adjust a bit from trick tip foot placement for better results sometimes and I don't k ow if that's the right thing to do or if I'm hindering myself by not keeping the placement the same as smaller footed people.
Thank you sm these videos have help me so much with my skating progression dawg you have no idea
Stoked to hear they’ve helped. Thank you 🙏🏾
This was one I’ve just been figuring out. So my issue with it is when I’m in a manny ready to flip out, I tend to drop my heel, from being in a stable position already, to adjust to another position to flip out from the actual hold of the manny. What happens is that heel drop not only throws my balance off but makes my pop foot flat. It feels comfortable but it’s never correct and I don’t get enough pop nor power to actually execute the trick so this definitely confirms what I was thinking!🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🫡🫡
i recently brought this to the attention of a beginner skater and linked your ollie higher video to her. she removed the comment and the link because i didnt feed her ego. all i did was attempt to equip her with the tools to make her ollie better. something in her video she encouraged her viewers to do.
I hope she finds what she needs!
yeah she will eventually. @@NormanWoods
What's your method for doing stairs? I started skating in march and got to ollie a 4 stair a few times but I sprained my ankle pretty bad and haven't been able to skate for the last 2 months. I love to ollie stairs and I want to keep going higher but I'm honestly kinda scared now and I never used to be. Being 21 I feel like I started too late to be able to send anything besides an ollie down something big. Any input from anybody would be solid, ty.
I'd say- don't set any expectations- who knows what you can and cannot do- provided you properly train yourself (getting to know your tricks really well before trying to send it anywhere)- just ollieing stairs is a one trick pony- there so many other ways to explore skating that you can do that probably less injury prone than always doing stairs- try exploring the other sides of skating- who knows you might enjoy it.
Always with the good tips. Also there are few people whose advice I’d rather take when attempting to go high than Norman ”Sky High” Woods.

I used to be so bad about that back in the day
I'm switching back to a 8.125 after skating 8.8 for 4 years I have not progressed enough to my own standards.
Wow! 8.8 is massive. Must’ve felt good on a mini ramp.
How about a rookie mistakes associated with holding on to tricks, memorizing tricks and getting tricks so that they are consistent?
Im learning how to ollie and shove it since 4 months each day for an hour but i cant do it im losing the motivation and the fun i had in the beginning. Is it okay just to cruise around and do no tricks? Or am i labeled as an poser if i do it?
I recommend it. Skating has to be fun. Also, if you’re close to it, mix in learning to carve, pump and kickturn on ramps. The Ollie and shuv will come. But, as a beginner, it’s rarely productive to spend all your time on one or two tricks. Since you have to learn the basics in every aspect of skating, spread your focus a bit.
@@NormanWoods km wery good at cruising around & im comfortable on my board. What should i do next? I’ill take a break from ollie & shuve it.
The number one thing is have fun! Been skating since 1986 & I still have to remind myself. As I've gotten older & lost the majority of my tricks a sadness sometimes sets in because I feel like I suck now. Listen to Sensei Norman & start messing around with kick turns on banks & ramps. Be kind to yourself, don't worry what others think. Go to the skate park in the morning when it's less crowded & the old dudes are there. Also, don't be afraid to ask your fellow skaters for help. Majority of times they'll be happy to help unless they're filming, super focused or having a bad day...
@@Kuzumeayate I put a detailed response to your comment in my latest upload.Check it here: th-cam.com/video/q4H6k5mdui0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ZOwwEYLkYB0KLKwm thank you for watching. I'd say learning some simple transition would be a great idea. Getting comfy tic-tacing around, dropping off curbs, getting up curbs, shimmying over parking blocks. All that stuff is vital, and helps you get used to controlling a skateboard.
@@NormanWoods ah man i appreciate you so much, i love all your Videos and if i write a comment below your videos u always answer it. 🤝

@@NormanWoods No problem bro!
I wish there was a Norman Woods of transition
Has to be
hmm... different strokes for different folks I guess. I've been noticing how a lot of pros keep their heel down when they pop, but it does seem to be a somewhat even split between heels down and heels up. Dylan Jaeb and Louis Lopez almost always keep their heel down, for example. I noticed Tiago keeps his heel down in switch stance, but brings his heel up in regular stance, and pops high as fuck in both stances. Not that this applies directly to skateboarding, but for maximum vertical leap sport science says to leave your heels on the ground when you crouch and then when you explode up your ankles, knees, and hips all extend at the same time. I can say for myself, heels down is much better than heels up.
A lot of it has to do with what your body can handle. My left ankle has lost mobility. So, I can’t have it up as much, and I also can’t keep it as high switch. But, as long as the heel is off the board, and the surrounding muscles keep tension, I get the desired result.
Also, popping isn’t a vertical leap. So, the same movements wouldn’t apply. Having to press the tail into the ground changes the entire game. Most of the guys you mentioned with heels down have considerably less pop than Tiago, who keeps his up (at least for half his tricks).
Hey I know this guy!!!! :) sup dude!
Yo! Dyami!!!
