The listener though (myself), can however put their own emotional context behind the song, and have it nothing to do about a woman who has been treated poorly, but rather their own feelings of loneliness and hurt. This edit further supports the idea of a romantic lense. I think that the story here is also sombre, but in it's own way, different to the intention from Mr Kitty. My own is of a romantic sense, but, reversed. Instead of growing to have the girl, growing and losing the girl in the process.
