Dusty was replaced by Elwood before Dusty died, but it was supposed to be only temporary and with Dusty's blessing, so he could take time off during the first part of the tour, but it turned out he got to take time off beyond this mortal plane. Thanks Troy.
I had the courage of making a bass cover thanks to you. I commented a couple paragraphs on your Hemispheres HD video because it inspired me to pick up a bass, I hope you see it Troy!
That's awesome and I'm so flattered to have played a minor role in your picking up the bass! I thought you did a great job and hope to see more of you in the future. Best wishes to you!
Nice and excellent tone! I learned Waitin' For The Bus / Jesus Just Left Chicago. Pretty straightforward but for a novice like me there's some faster stuff in Bus that's a little tricky. The "turnaround" that first appears after "I got my brown paper bag & my take home pay" and the stuff during the guitar solo.
I was never a huge ZZ Top fan, but “nasty fart” does explain a lot!!! Great cover, the last band I played guitar in, we also covered this one. Now I’ll try it on bass…I think I have just the right pair of blue jeans to dial that particular” tone. Awesome as always Fonzy. You are the best. Rest In Peace indeed Dusty (or a low muffled rumble, if you prefer)
One of my favorite bands, and a favorite song. I’m partial to the older albums. Caught them live 6 times…never disappointed. Thanks Troy for honoring Dusty!
RIP, Dusty. Thanks for recording this, Troy! We finally got to see ZZ Top several years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed the show. And the opener was Kenny Wayne Shepherd, which was also excellent. Expanding on the "fart" bass tone, I saw an interview with Dusty many years ago where he described it as farting in a trash barrel (or something like that). 🤣
I think we had tickets to see them with Kenny Wayne (my wife likes him and we've seen him a few times) but the show got rescheduled and then cancelled.
Funny, I just started listening to ZZ Top again. I really listened to them a lot in the 80' and 90's, and just quit listening to them over time. About 4 months ago I heard one of their songs on the radio and added them to my spotify playlist.
Dusty was always one of my favorites, more for his cool aesthetic than anything else. Thug from Eliminator was a fun little bassline too. Excellent cover as always!
Always loved The "Two Step Licks" on this Bass piece! Would have been a Hoot Troy if you had a Beard, Hat and Sun Glasses!!😅 ZZ Top absolutely have one of those distinctive sounds were you just hear a few bars or notes and you know exactly who playing! Of course they really got their Chops when MTV started up and their videos were such Show Stoppers! I too read a few articles where Dusty spoke about his "Fart Sound" as being his preverbal "Growl Sound"! That gave me a good laugh! I saw "The Top" many moons ago as they headlined a show that had 4 or 5 opening acts. They flew into the place in a private helicopter, played LESS than an hour and left. By then most of the crowd didn't knw where they themselves but many Fans were indeed pissed and felt cheated. The whole deal got a bad writeup in the local paper. We will be in the 90's here next couple of days so Cheers From Honolulu, Ohio
You mentioned a couple of things I was going to write about (his sound and the old videos), but I thought I'd keep it simple. We saw them last summer, with the new bass player, and it was one of the shortest sets I've seen by a headliner... about an hour and then minutes. Mid 90's and high humidity in NY tomorrow! Too hot to be walking around the city before the Joe Jackson show. Thanks again and take care!
I recently bought a second vinyl copy of Tres Hombres to replace my original - which was never a great pressing in the first place. One of my favourite ZZ Top Albums so thanks for the track, Troy. BTW, Master of Sparks has got to be one of the strangest lyrics ever!
Ce qui est super avec vos vidéos, c'est que cela permet de voir le travail des bassistes de groupe. Pour moi, la basse est un élément majeur et trop souvent minorée ou mise en sourdine..
@@TJH3113 Could always take 'em or leave 'em myself. Then fell in playing with guys who were big fans and had to learn half a dozen of their big songs. Best review I ever heard of ZZ - "same three guys same three chords"! That said, I saw them just before covid hit and they put on a great show. Their songs remind me of highways in the heartland - roll along for miles hypnotic dull and straight as a ruler then suddenly a twist or turn that wakes you up..
Nice choice and cover Troy! The way you described it, it's more likely that you went to the "Afterburner" Tour... It's the album right after "Eliminator" and the cover is indeed the ZZtop car flying in space...
Thanks for the info! You must have read something I wrote about ZZ Top on another video. Good memory. We saw them last summer (with Dusty's replacement) and they played a super short set... just over an hour.
Fantastic as always. I got to see them on their Recycler tour with The Black Crowes opening and the Crowes managed to last through the whole set. I guess they were having issues with Tops management and ended up getting kicked off the tour later. I do remember them talking crap about the tours sponsor Miller Lite lol. My favorite album of theirs is Afterburner (I'm into the sequencers) but I ove all their work. I think it's funny that their first big tour was pretending to be The Zombies and to this day they never talk about it lol.
Thanks. I saw The Black Crowes a couple of times and didn't really care for them. I was really picking up on the fact that no one on the stage seemed to like anyone else. And I've never seen a guitar player change guitars so often. After a while, it became a distraction.
@@TJH3113 I liked their music but the whole brother's being at each other's throats all the time always annoyed me. It's the same with The Kinks and Oasis. You're in a position where you're able to make music for a living and what do you do? Waste all you're time bickering over stupid bs.

It was truly a sad day when Dusty was taken from us. It was such that he was always there and always would be. I hope that makes sense. Excellent video Troy. Top stuff man. Ps have you thought of getting a multi scale?
No disrespect taken. As far as getting bored, I'd say that, no, I don't think I've ever been bored by any song that I've uploaded. I think, if a song really bored me, I would never put the time it takes to get it together into it in the first place. I've been thinking about doing a video on this (or a very similar topic) for a while now. To explain further, even the songs that I may consider "simple" or "easy" take hours of work. That's the time it takes to learn them and then the longer process of getting them to the point where I can play them straight through without making and glaring errors. If a song started out as "boring" to me, I would never spend that much time on it because it wouldn't be enjoyable. I find that the songs I consider to be "simple" or ''easy" often have other factors that demand my attention. Things like the quality of the note that I'm playing and the timing. This song actually seems to have some timing issues going on with the drums, so that always required my attention. I don't think a song (bass-line) has to be complicated or difficult to be a valuable song to learn. Now that I think of it, the video I have planned for next week touches on this topic.
@@TJH3113 I had suspected a bit of that but also because you are a certain caliber of a player I imagine you could blow right through certain songs with out any effort or regard lol. What I didn't realize is that you were a perfectionist and how much though and effort you put in to the more simplistic songs. Certainly the making and thoughtfulness of a true musician.
Just noticed when one the A string you go to 2 fingers for 16th notes and switch to 1 finger on the E :) sounds great either way! is that just the way you do it, or is there a tone reason? Spector sounds great for this, nice grit. I might have a go at it later.
Great question. I had to watch the video to see what I was doing. At this point, most everything I do is second nature and I don't really think about it. In this case, it looks as though I was trying to get a little extra "chug" by emphasizing the 2 and the 4 beat on the A (and D) string/s by using alternating fingers. It seems as though I was content playing it a bit straighter on the E string. I hope that made a bit of sense.
I was originlly surprised how quickly the band replaced Dusty and moved on too. But then after thinking about it, I figured, being that Dusty's health had been deteriorating for some time, perhaps they had already been planning for his passing and what they were going to do afterwards? Who knows? RIP Dusty.
