In dirt and sand, yeah its inefficient. Its punching straight through rock that these things shine

Not too sure about drilling through rock, but with machining metals it's all about feeds and speeds. Feed in this case is how much pressure is being placed upon the drill head by the rig and speeds refer to the rpm of the shaft. To someone who is inexperienced in rock drilling, I might say there is not enough feed force or the bedrock is harder than you think it is. Or, you're not drilling through bedrock but a base of large river rock and stuff is moving around under the head, absorbing the impact that would otherwise break rock.

Surface should be drilled by Chevron drag bits. That's good to medium rock. After that a Tricone or PDC should be put to use. Drilling soft formations with a tricone is like wiping before taking a poop. It makes no sense.

It's slow because it's not grinding or cutting the rock. It simply breaks up the rocks by applying pin point pressure at random places which takes time.

Yes, that could be a reason too

The tricone drill bit is meant to crush the rocks, so it lasts a lot longer than other drill bits that just try to cut the rock. It's meant for super tough underground boulders and it takes a little bit of time for the water to extract the soil/rock it crushed up. A normal solid drill would just break coming in contact with this stuff or would require very inefficient hammer drills which could not only snap the pipe but the teeth as well if pushed too far, those are more for soil.

Also it could just be the operator just not pushing it in, which is 100% possible.

Yes sir, we will reach water next year, it’s 6 foot deep in solid sand.. how much water will you need to dill, ahh sir, much more than this well will ever produce… yes hello boss, how much you pay the new guy??

The head is too shallow it is oscillating too much

It means that the pushing down pressure is not enough.
