It goes without saying that committing suicide would be extremely painful and scary, assisted dying would stop that. I personally wouldn't want anyone caring for me, cleaning me and feeding me if I was unable to, at that point my life would no longer be worth living - that's my personal opinion, I'm not speaking for anyone else. I'm disabled myself and respect the difference of opinion but its very clear that this bill is for terminally ill people and not disabled people. However, if people are depressed for example and they've literally tried every treatment available over 10-30 years or so and nothing has improved how they feel, why can't that person choose to die, it's crueller to force them to live imo, then they'll ultimately die a horrible, self inflicted death because they weren't allowed assisted dying and what happens when their attempt fails and they’re significantly worse off? We should be allowed to die safely and with our dignity in tact.
@ I did and I respect their opinion, I just happen to have a different take on it. We can respectfully agree to disagree, can’t we? I’m also disabled and have a view on this, my opinion should be as valid as anyone else’s.
I grew up in a world where people did not need to buy a house. Renting was acceptable and encouraged. We had a social housing sector. What have young people got to look forward to in our society?
What a fabulous programme. You two are the best ! Steven is such a good host, with succinct questions, unlike some of Michael's that ramble on and on. Steven also avoids Michael's annoying habit of reading something out or playing a clip and then telling us what we have just heard him read or seen for ourselves. Helena is simply stunning, a brilliant analyst and commentator. 🎉
On employment, I did that, several times, and after about a year found a job where I was fired after two months for not being able to move my hands fast enough (I later found out that I have a disability). I gave up on finding a job and applied to university instead.
Listening to Leadbetter ignore the question about potential changes to social attitudes, & not engage with the argument at all, has helped clarify my position on assisted dying (not that it matters, the politicians will decide this, & that's usually on the grounds of what's best for their careers ultimately). Plus Jamie Hale - big respect.
I can tell you if you are elderly with health conditions this bill is terrifying. To think we might go to the doctor and feel she thinks we should perhaps die, already it's well known that you get better, faster treatment if you can say it's interfering with your ability to work. Living out your last years feeling a burden and unworthy of life. Young people see extreme age as something they never want to experience but it can be a joyful part of life.
I'm sorry, but just because some people are worried about a slippery slope, or they can't imagine that some people might choose to end their lives under different conditions than they themselves would, that shouldn't give them the right to cause intolerable pain and suffering to hundreds of thousands, even millions, of people over what, the next hundred years because they have decided that their concerns are more important than the rights of others over their own bodies, lives, and eventual deaths. Either we believe in bodily autonomy or we don't. And effectively handwaving this to "oh well, people kill themselves all the time, and I support suicide being decrimilalised" is just callous.
GenX did not get defined benefit schemes like the boomers did, or at least nobody I know from my generation did - many of us have hotchpotches of private pensions which are worth far less than we need them to be because we were working for companies which didn't even have to offer them for years unlike now at least where one has to be offered and so we're looking like we won't be able to retire at all.
Lebanon used to be a nice country. The Lebanon/Israel border was Israel’s least volatile border. Beirut was “the Paris of the Middle East”. What happened?
It’s amazing that France declares ‘immunity’. What on Earth is going on?!
Free Palestine
Free Lebanon from Hezbollah.
Shame on Macron.
Loved the segment on work. Brilliant commentary from Helena and Steven.
Great to see Jamie Hale on NM. Please have them on as a regular contributor.

Did you actually listen to Jamie Hale?

They had a cease fire with Hamas last year around the same time for the holidays.

Surprise Surprise the IOF hasn't stepped down 🙄

If they replace Michael with Steven I might consider donating again.
Sorry guys, but can someone please give Steven a glass of water. The dry mouth noises are getting out of hand.
Very good. Outstanding show. Again. Congratulations and thanks to all at NM.
The IDF can retreat within minutes. They were in just by a boots-length ... :D
Yes , neo- liberal doctrine= get a job, regardless of the rewards, material or spiritual.
I wasn't sure which way I would vote, if I had a vote, on the assisted dying bill. Jamie Hale has convinced me against it.

Take care of your health, trust me when you least expect it, it'll derail your whole life speaking from experience ❤
Get out IDF go away free Palestine 🇵🇸 🇵🇸 🇵🇸 🇵🇸
its not weather youre a burden to others or a states thats important, its about if life is a burden to yourself THATS THE QUESTION
And you can do something about it yourself why drag the lives of other people such as the elderly and disabled into that awful mental space

That you haven’t picked up that the ceasefire agreement is with Hezbollah, not Lebanon, says everything.
ceasefire deal is bad news for palestinians cmm
Making it up as we go along law, - WE ARE GUILTY. WE ARE GUILTY. AND IT GONNA GET WORSE I BELIEVE!
2.8 million long-term sick & disabled -- 831,000 job vacancies in the UK economy.... What are they suggesting, the worlds largest job sharing scheme?

The assistant dying Bill, also known as the IDF
On the death bill: Good intentions have never been useful for anything much but road paving on the highway to hell.
