Oh my Lord, this is so sad and tragic. I don't like driving on freeways anymore. Makes me so nervous and I get anxious with all kinds of people driving dumb, speeding or cutting people off on the roads. My condolences to all families of the lost & injured.
literally all those things you said that make you nervous about driving on the highway is avoidable if you are paying attention and being a productive driver. i don’t think anyone was really at fault here, it’s called black ice i know you have heard of it. it’s a hard sheet of ice with a thin layer of water on top, making it crystal clear and about 10x slicker then actual ice. sad this had to happen though, don’t be nervous driving , just cautious and aware, that’s all we ask to keep others safe .
When the roads have black ice everyone have to be very careful including the truck drivers. People want to drive reckless in weather like this in so much of a hurry. Also a 4 wheel drive isn't going to help you on ice. This is so heartbreaking.
🥺 this is just terrifying.. imagine going home/wherever and then you see a crash where your aiming for. you slow down and get your brakes automatically, but there’s ice on the road. you bump into the crash and crying while getting into this terrible accident. someone behind you is going full speed, eventually hitting you.
Yes, this happened to a friend of mine. He slowed down, but person behind him slid into him. Pushed him into the accident, and he is now crippled and lost his legs & one arm.

For real I’m currently in Texas near Dallas doing training for the Air Force, but I’m from Casper I sadly called it and told others that there’s probably a bad wreck somewhere near by, it was super icy here yesterday we were sliding all over the sidewalks
I always tell myself in 1-80 I’m never waiting in the road unless it’s on one of them hills of course if I can I’m taking my rig into a pasture thru a fence whatever I have to get away but here there is no where these people could go

I know its rare but Texas department of transportation needs to keep Salt/sand trucks on reserve at least once a year. February is usually the coldest month. Those trucks should be ready in January at least. Tbh Texans already drive wild af so add ice to the roads here goes this unnecessary tragedy
Slow down, stay off the main highways and use alternate routes so you can stay far away from other vehicles. Allow at least twice as much time to reach your destination. Better to arrive late than not arrive at all. ❤️😕

Why does this toll bridge have cement barriers dividing those two lanes? There was no where for the trucks or vehicles to go to attempt to avoid the pileup. Just so tragic.
We don't put winter tires on in Texas (I use to live in Ohio and other northern states). It's icy so little it's not worth it. People don't slow down and don't pay attention to what's happening in front of them, sadly. No one deserved this, but I hope the survivors learn something.

The Texas highway speed limits are the highest in 50 states. Highway speed limit from 65 to 80 or more. And ppl loves that, driving fast, drivers racing each other, at the end crush and death. The state of Texas should minimize the speed limit.

There are toll roads that have a 85mph speed limit. All of the high speed roads have to be a certain amount miles from residential areas.

It helps but you still have to plan for the ice. My first car didn't have ABS, my newer cars have, and the stability controls, it definitely helps, but you still need to adjust your driving habits.

Vivian S yes it was. From my understanding this particular area of that highway is very dangerous in normal conditions. The cars were apparently coming down from a hill which contributed to their inability to slow down or even see what was ahead. So scary.

Didn't always work. My hubby works for KDOT here in Kansas. If temps are below and especially with freezing wind it only re freezes the roads. Drove in it everyday this last week.

But Texas uses a pretreatment that only works if applied before it freezes if it don't get washed away. salt will melt the ice on from top. But Texas chooses not to use the methods of the Midwestern states use for years because they say it would be to costly to salt all the roads in Tx and its to corrosive on cars and roads..thats why they dont use methods that work its about money. Oh and it wouldn't hurt to buy a dang plow or two.

These lanes should of been closed the night before. Just like the siren goes off for tornadoes 🌪, they should of had a statewide alert to close freeways 🛣 off and direct people other routes or just not go anywhere. Once you get in that middle lane, there is no way out. They couldn’t swerve to save themselves, they were stuck 😭🙏🏼

Good advice. Stay off highways and use alternate route in bad weather if possible. I realize it can't always be done.

These are fast moving highways of 4-5 lanes up to 80 mph. When they stop cold in icy conditions, they weren't salted down like up there.

With all of the techs integrated in vehicles nowadays, no one has comeup with an invention that could deal with icy roads yet?
It helps but you still have to plan for the ice. My first car didn't have ABS, my newer cars have, and the stability controls, it definitely helps, but you still need to adjust your driving habits.

Vivian S yes it was. From my understanding this particular area of that highway is very dangerous in normal conditions. The cars were apparently coming down from a hill which contributed to their inability to slow down or even see what was ahead. So scary.
Now that’s a log jam. We do this in Texas. When the ice first starts we have thousands of wrecks. The next following days we hardly have any problems.
We've never had a pile up like that on any metroplex highway!!

Ya know most of this could be avoided if salt and calcium chloride was used.
Didn't always work. My hubby works for KDOT here in Kansas. If temps are below and especially with freezing wind it only re freezes the roads. Drove in it everyday this last week.
@@Alaskandragonfly7 Kansas must not know how to clean roads just like Texas. If salt if applied on the road the ice would melt. But Texas uses a pretreatment that only works if applied before it freezes if it don't get washed away. salt will melt the ice on from top. But Texas chooses not to use the methods of the Midwestern states use for years because they say it would be to costly to salt all the roads in Tx and its to corrosive on cars and roads..thats why they dont use methods that work its about money. Oh and it wouldn't hurt to buy a dang plow or two.
Exactly what i was thinking about. Why was the roads not treated in advance. It could have prevented this whole thing. Looks like someone didn't do their job!!!!!

These lanes should of been closed the night before. Just like the siren goes off for tornadoes 🌪, they should of had a statewide alert to close freeways 🛣 off and direct people other routes or just not go anywhere. Once you get in that middle lane, there is no way out. They couldn’t swerve to save themselves, they were stuck 😭🙏🏼

What a nightmare. These poor people probably did not realize that even if the roadway is clear, the bridges and overpasses can become a deathtrap. Even going slow, you simply can't brake and stop on ice. Dear God, please watch over the people in Dallas/Fort Worth. Amen.
