Stranded on hilbre island overnight | solo wild camping with minimal kit | Dangerous fast tides, UK

  • The plan was to get myself stranded on a small uninhabited island overnight , it's a two mile walk to the island passing two smaller islands, little eye and middle eye , the main island is called hilbre island.
    low tide was at 6pm and low tide the next morning was at 6.15am , you can only access the islands from low tide but have to allow yourself time to get back safely.
    A lot of people have to be rescued every year by getting caught out by fast incoming tides , there's a safe route you are best taking to get back and too to the islands.
    The walk is quite safe if you read up on the area and check the tide times before you visit the islands , it's a two mile walk but is quite slippy and wet underfoot so usually takes about an hour to make the journey.
    I went with minimalist gear , British army Bivi bag with no tarp , oex sleeping bag , titanium pot with soto windmaster stove , it was very windy at times on the island but calmed down through the night.
    I tried my first freeze dried meal , exhibition foods extreme energy range over 1000 kcal meals, chicken tikka and rice.
    Heavy rain and even sleet and hail stone , then bright sunshine in the space of an hour so the weather changes quickly too.
    It was a good adventure, I really enjoyed it!
    thanks for watching!

    I love Hilbre and that whole coastline, I was raised there. Me and my sons would walk the way you walked from when they were babies, we'd have no boots, in the winter,walking across the ridges and closely following a retreating tide, just to keep your bare feet warm, the kids would say it was like pins and needles the whole way. We'd often (if the tide was right as we'd start on an ebb) walk across to the Red Rocks and the to Leasowe lighthouse, stop at The Hoylake Lights and then walk back to Heswall.

    Easily your best outing yet Gaz. I know it's not big hills or forests but it just captivated and relaxed me at the same time. It was a mixture of that suspense in the sea and the ability for nobody else to get to you. Total solitude. Nice one mate. Mark

    • @GazianoOutdoors
      @GazianoOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Mark mate , it was a really good camp , I thought of you when I used the shelter to sleep in , because I know you've made use of buildings yourself when on wild camps for shelter, I didn't film it though coz it was too dark and didn't want to use a torch incase the Life guards thought someone was stuck on the island and sent a boat out for me 😂, so kept a low profile, really enjoyed this camp , thanks for the nice comment mate I really appreciate it 👍👍🏕️

Had a couple who did something of the same on a small island off the coast of Nova Scotia and someone saw their campfire and thought they were seeking help and the coastguard were sent out to "rescue" them...lol Made the news and a bit more adventure then they bargained for. In the sixties as schoolboys we used to visit the islands and go camping on Little Eye, dig lugworms and put lay lines out at low tide fishing for Flounders. We would camp/sleep overnight during the high tide and go and collect the fish at the next low tide. Great times, it is remembered with affection and tearful thoughts of friends no longer with us.
    We used to call the islands Hilbre, Little Hilbre and Little Eye. The lifeboat station and slipway/ramp on the far side of Hilbre were already out of use at the time and in disrepair but not as bad as in this video.

    That was special. Gaz The Seal Whisperer! I liked the look of Little Eye for a bivvy or small tent. Like a cartoon desert island. Great shots of the rainbows too. Middle Eye to Hilbre made me quite misty eyed - the eroded red sandstone, caves and rockpools reminded me of Exmouth in Devon, where my Mum and sister live - my second home really. Not been down there since the pandemic kicked in but hope to soon enough! You do pick some fantastically interesting places to camp Gaz. Beautifully shot, even in manky weather - so glad you got a bright morning anyway mate! Cheers pal. Rich. 👍

    An extremely unique place to camp... certainly a camp that you can't, after the tide comes in, change you mind and hike out... That would be kind of eerie... 🙄

    Mate what a great little adventure , stunning place indeed , bet you loved it . Cool vid as usual. By the way what do you make of the soto windmaster 🤔 I'm considering that or msr pocket rocket .take care fella look forward to your next adventure 👍

      Thanks mate , I'm loving the windmaster mate, the wind was worse than it looked in this video , I had to hold my pan to stop it tipping over, the stove worked great , it's got a wider burner too , I had the same choice and chose this , but the msr pocket rocket is another good stove so don't think you can go that wrong with either mate , I'm happy with this so far though , thanks for watching mate ATB 🏕️👍

    did you come across any rangers or anyone patrolling to make sure nobody was camping?

    • @GazianoOutdoors
      @GazianoOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi mate , not this time , I had the island to myself, I camped again a few weeks back and the buildings were occupied, if you scroll down my videos the other camp is there , I camped on the middle island that time , might give you a better idea of the area , there are rangers that visit regularly. It's a stunning area , two of my favourite camps so far , cheers mate 👍 atb

    I've been looking up Hilbre for a while, what's the situation with the locals?
    I just want to wildcamp, cause no fuss and leave no trace. I'd rather they were happy I wasn't a threat than anything.
    I recently did Piel Island but that's a bit more open than Hilbre.

    • @GazianoOutdoors
      @GazianoOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi mate it's the same with most places in England, you're not supposed to camp there , wild camping isn't allowed, I took the risk and left really early and set up late , you have to make sure the tide times are perfect too for you to get there and back, it was one of my favourite places to camp so far though , thanks for watching mate ATB 👍

    Did nobody tell you it's illegal to camp on the island?

    • @GazianoOutdoors
      @GazianoOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's illegal to camp anywhere in the UK apart from Scotland and Dartmoor national park, so most wild camping videos are breaking some kind of rule if they've not gained permission , unless they are camping in Scotland or on Dartmoor. The most important thing is leaving no trace , which many dog walkers and smokers don't. Cheers mate

      @@GazianoOutdoors Yes I appreciate that, thanks for replying. I was wondering if you could actually be prosecuted for staying somewhere like Hilbre, obviously I'd love to and would leave no traces of being there

    • @GazianoOutdoors
      @GazianoOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@markquinn7030 I think you can be prosecuted for camping in certain places yeah, they let fishermen fish on there though at night and on red rocks across the water , it's the campers that leave a lot of mess that give us a bad name mate , but dog walkers leave a lot of little black bags about everywhere, smokers are as bad too , its just a case of being respectful and leave no trace , I wasn't aware i could be prosecuted if i camped on the island as fishermen do night fishing on there too. Cheers mate
