This just popped up in my recommendations because I'd been watching a lot of vids about shooting on film / making digital look like film, and I'm so glad it did because this might be the most entertaining short film I've ever seen.
I am also experimenting with making digital look "vintage" I am slowly coming to the conclusion that giving your digital video a "feel" is more important than trying to introduce fake noise and mis-aligned frame scans.
I remember seeing this on Bravo, when the channel was actually artistic and entertaining. The release date is 1993, but the cultural aesthetics look distinctly 80's.
@@chaidle because cameras and film have been around and prices went down. But they are going up with film having a bit of a rise in popularity again because people are realizing our rush into digital degraded quality and produces inferior results. It's not a replacement digital is an alternative.
@@pilsplease7561 you must consider major feature film industry. Even who has big budget still prefer 100percent the digital way except some stubborn like tarantino
@Tack Draas True. Only they look slightly more fresher, more modern and less grainy. You could be forgiven for thinking those films were shot on digital or HD.
I remember seeing this in a screening at NYU in the late 1900s, and somebody said something recently that made me think of this film. The last time I looked for it was definitely before you posted this transfer. I feel 30 years younger seeing this film again!
Okay, some of these blindsided me by how hilarious they were "Last night, Carl got drunk and loosened the bolts that hold one of these chairs. He doesn't remember which." "Once in a great while, his holiness John Paul II dials the wrong number. Mary Bridges... is waiting" "Santa clause is coming... Patrick is waiting" with a shotgun, that one was good haha! This was a very entertaining short film!
This is probably one of the best if not the best short film i've seen. If this isn't too much to ask, what mic did you use or is it a mike that comes with the camera? Also what's the mic used for the narrator? Thank you so much!
Thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoyed the film! In answer to your tech questions: This was made “back in the day.” In the early 90s. So long ago I really don't remember the details to your question. This was a time when sound was recorded on a “Nagra”- on reel to reel 1/4” audio magnetic tape- using “crystal sync” to lock between film camera and audio device speed. I believe we used a Sennheiser shotgun boom mic. The VO was recorded in a professional radio studio with some bad-ass, multi-thousand dollar mic. But an interesting detail is that it was recorded to a VHS tape that just keep rolling as we did the takes and I gave the vo artist (Larry Kenny) direction. I then transferred that VHS audio to audio “Mag” which I edited on a flatbed Steinbeck. Like I said this was "old school film making." It's a whole new world today.
The menu sounded fantastic at the end and I'm hungry. But so the restaurants and grocery stores are closed because it's morning.. looks like.. I'm waiting.
Dude, the actual waiter. He needs to pop up in movies just doing this one thing. 😆😆😆 That part with the carnie though, that was the beginning of a horror film for real.

Digital look like film.... I never.

💯💯💯 Precisely
Looks like 1973
@@jerrygil1965 It sounds more like the 70s then looks, because of the famous 70s style narrator.
Maybe its the film stock

This is the exact look that i want for my short film
Did you finally shoot it?
first film school project I have really enjoyed, fantastic fantastic work
Malcolm McCarthy you were the part of this film??? Doesn't film cost too much??
@@chaidle its cheaper to shoot film than digital in the long run if you do the math.

It's the kind of style of filming we'll never see again in Cinema

35mm and 70mm
You can recreate something close to this on your freaking phone. Just need two apps -motion cam app and super 16 app.
Wow,...just wow. One of the best shorts I've ever seen.
I saw this film at Tel Aviv students film festival so many years ago.
And I was waiting for the chance to see it again.
Fun film!
Very nicely done. Congrats!
I was waiting for something unexpectedly to happen in the end. Nice short film. I think you should make this into a feature film-SERIOUSLY!
4:34 oh my, Boyle, how is it?
Any memories of the camera/lenses and filmstock?
omg I remember seeing this when I first went to NYU-they showed it as part of freshmen orientation

The specific mic model is most likely the Sennheiser 416, even to this day it's an industry workhorse.
This is going to reach a million views one day....
And I am.....waiting
As a fan of The State and all the comedians tangentially related, this is so cool to see!

This is surprisingly very witty
"He loosed the bolts on one of the chairs. He is waiting."

Great ending! I’m glad I waited for it. I kind of wasn’t getting it until the end title came up and reminded me, then it hit me like a hammer.
film just looks better. Flat out.
this is my new favourite thing. It's amazing
Do you know what camera they shot this on?
i LOVE THIS SHORT
I don't know why, but films are really special and deliver a visual impact that digital is hard to provide.
Film always saves the world as we see it. As the human eye sees it. Digital… is just an imitation & interpretation of what the image sensor sees.
The guy in the thumbnail was in Superbad.
what microphone did you use?? love that old school quality
this is fantastic!! it's like walking into a bunch of william eggleston photographs
This film is a favorite of mine
I still revisit this often
David Wain!!
I Havent seen this in years, I didn't know what this was when I first saw it.
