This was such an emotional performance. Though i have to say, not enough people are talking abt how the crowd really added to the ambience of this song. From the beginning, they sang along, and it slowly died out as people were drawn in. Then my favourite was at the climax of the song and that one dude in the crowd belted before corey did. It just felt right
I absolutely agree. Crowd participation is exhilirating, especially when they're singing in tune and in time. It gives that extra oomph to a performance.
Both are true; the song has taken on a new meaning sing Gray's passing because he advocated so hard for the song. But it also has a lot of emotions baked in already.
Most likely a bit of both, but hearing how he kinda struggles at parts it's clear the "meaning"/"reason" behind the lyrics are the main source.. also really how Corey himself have put it. The fact that Paul and Joey put music to the lyrics and how Paul pushed Corey to put the song of the album.. that's just that little extra sprinkle that make it even harder. But if you read the lyrics and know bits about the history behind the lyrics, it really speaks for itself as far as "the reason why Snuff is hard AF for Corey to perform live". Yes, Paul had a big part in the making and he was an excellent musician and he is missed daily by the band and fans... but honestly, Maggots seem to put too much of that into this particular one. My opinion at least.. from what I've read/heard Corey himself say about this one.
Background of this excellent song is a story in itself A lady in Coreys life helped him through addiction problems, he fell for her, she rejected him and it hit him hard He took this song to a Slipknot recording session, he thought it too melodic, but Paul liked it and encouraged him to develop it, as most of the bands lyrics were Shaun/Joey/Paul efforts at that time The encouragement he got from the band, through to the final Slipknot version of the song (which is so great! Creepy video mind!) was a turning point for him Then within a short period of the album coming out and tour, Paul sadly OD'd due to a prescription error causing heart failure - Paul was like Coreys brother and so this accoustic version took on a new meaning. He breaks down often singing it and the crowd always carries on for him until he pulls it together. He is an amazing vocalist and wordsmith, intelligent and ferocious at the same time Joey said this song was Coreys 'masterpiece' - he isnt wrong.
Thank you sincerely for this well explained back story of this song!! I knew about him being rejected, and I thought that i had heard that it was also tough for him because of a close friends death, but i could never find anything about exact incident, so figured it was two separate back stories and on was just rock lore. So they both happened and the song actually links the two life events for Corey! No wonder he gets so emotional, thank you again!!
"It took the death of hope to let you go" is one of the most heart wrenching lines I've heard in any song for me, because of things that have happened in my life. This song makes me tear up every time I listen to it.
I love the "you couldn't hate enough to love". Its like the American indian 2 wolves theory and ying and yang. Cant have good/light without bad/darkness.
Corey, just one of those singers that doesn't need an edit, doesn't need an effect, and can sing far back from a mic and his voice just goes. It just a voice you rarely hear these days and it is always refreshing to hear him sing and espically this song, it hits deep.
He has a huge vocal range. Several octaves. He’s amazingly talented. Started in Stone Sour and now tours with Stone Sour and Slipknot. He has always been open about his history of addiction, mental health problems, and abuse. He is a truly honest human being.
I have to disagree - sometimes it's a cool "add" - but sometimes, it's best to let the original do the talking. The message is everything with this song, not "adding" something to it. Usually the fills are nice though
your reaction was beautiful, hearing someone talk about the deeper emotion behind the performance and acknowledging the pain that music can carry. when you add the extra notes it feels like such a graceful compliment, and the way you just seem to gently offer it and take it away makes the song feel so much more full. thank you for this and for your unique perspective :)
Great reaction, especially your playing along. Seriously, besides you playing well, the piano lends itself to this acoustic version very well, you should totally record this with one of your students playing guitar, i bet it’d turn out great!!
You're legitimately one of my favorite reactors because you combine your knowledge of actually playing music with a passion for listening to it, so it's the best of both worlds. Would love to see you react to *Meshuggah- Dancers to a Discordant System* sometime. No one has reacted to it yet, and the music and lyrics are incredible
You know over the years of listening to metal and all genres around it I've had well meaning and genuine friends ask me things along the lines of "how can you listen to such angry and sad music all the time without being so angry and sad all the time?" and I think this song (and what you said about it uplifting you hearing his pain) are what I take from the music. I feel love just like everyone else and I've been truly loved in my life thankfully....but there is just something so .....HUMAN....about hearing someone else give you a piece of their hurt like this. It's an intensely uncomfortable thing because it makes you reflect on your own pain. I've felt what he's saying here. I've lost a partner I thought I would spend my life with. I saw my best friend get shot and killed ...watched him bleed out on the pavement. I've watched the year long slide into whimpering, confused death when my grandmother passed from dimentia last year. Two weeks later "Constance" by Spiritbox came out and the music video came around and handed me that piece of hurt all over again and I cried whole heartedly in remembrance. In that moment its almost therapeutic to share that with someone even if its just through video and not as real as a hug or a shared moment in person. Some could call it being a masochist to willingly open yourself up to this but compared to happy and loving topics I think this is the frontier less explored and it reminds me I'm alive in a way. Just like dynamics in a song there has to be that counterpoint to put things in perspective. Not saying metal has a monopoly on that but I think the genre lends itself well to it given the sonic choices. Hard to play death metal and have the lyrics be about puppies and sunflowers. Unless you're the guys in Brojob.
I always told people similar things, like “it feels comforting to know others have gone through hard things, just like we do.” Sad music makes me happy, because others can relate to me in that aspect. Long story short lol
I mean you see therapists on tv/movies and like dr phil and stuff telling you your not alone in them thoughts/feelings but sounding like a robot, here comes corey/slipknot and a lot of metal bands showing you them feelings, then it's not being told your not alone its seeing and feeling it.
Genuinely love seeing reactions to this, Corey's insane vocals and range never fails in giving me goosebumps, from Slipknot and the growls to screams than transitioning to clean vocals is always amazing, to say his other band Stone Sour and Through Glass and just how badass he is ! Thoroughly enjoy your opinions and reactions to this and many you've done ! I don't know if you looked into it or even have anything planned for it, but i'd love to see you react to Avenged Sevenfold live at LBC, any of their tracks at the show really !
You need to check out rise against prayer of the refugee. Tim Mclrath is one of the most emotional singers.Super tight stuff. Great content thanks for uploading!
Since you took the time to make and post this video for us to enjoy, I want to take the time to remind you how much we appreciate it! Thanks again for the wonderful video and positive vibes for us to feed off of. I also am yet again asking for you to do some Avenged Sevenfold reactions. I know you will love them!
I hope that you don't get much hate for you playing the keys during the reaction -because I'm just sitting here loving it. :) It's something I never knew I needed to hear!
I have to play along. I have no choice. Those who like it stick around. Those who don’t, don’t. But some do make very mean comments. It’s what they feel they need to do. Thanks Jon.
Bro this whole show is epic Cory Taylor he does spongebob squarepants and it's amazing the whole crowd is full throat through out most of the show it's Cory Taylor live in London and it's One of my favorite DVDs. I herd this song and had to learn it so I did and now I play it all the time. And also tired is epic too . Really enjoyed your reaction glad you got to this one. Peace from Stan the Alaskan.
This song it so many days and steps in my life touches me on the personal level as it did and does for Corey. Singing that song out loud and gritting my voice on every section and strumming guitar strings to it ... brings me to the emotional state on relief trough the burst of tears. This song - this performance - is so emotionally packed as not many ever has been ... espetially for me on such a personal touch and level of every note and every meaning of lyrics. Thank You Corey ... Thank You Slipknot
I never thought youd do this song. I used to listen to it alot as a teenager. It was and is very emotional. I appreciate your input! Love the keyboard additions ♡ do more DGD
I really enjoyed your reaction, and your interaction with and additions to the music. You nailed the reason why people love Corey Taylor so much (and why some people hate him so much): He lives his life inside out, making his art out of all the things other people hide. It's uncomfortable to watch sometimes, but impossible to look away.
I'm so glad you finally reacted to this!!! The live version of "Bother" is from the same show and you would absolutely love it!!! Also I'll be buying merch!!
Still cant cover this song without it hitting me towards the end. For corey its about his previous love then paul died and he dedicated the song to him as a more ironically positive thing. The whole concept and song are just sad as fuck. Watching one of the hardest men in rock and metal break down just kills me every time. It wasn't this one but one of the originals where he actually broke down on stage.
i love this song cause i can relate to it so much. whenever im getting in that place it always helps me to listen it and know that so many people go through the same thing and we are all together in this.

The thing about snuff, its original meaning changed after paul died and it has been dedicated to him. Thats why it makes corey genuinely cry when he played it, paul was a brother and he lost him
Corey's voice is truly a treasure! it was so nice of you to start with his melodic side, would love to see you react to any of his slipknot songs. You da best!
Man, I know I’m a year late but I love watching people react to slipknot and other metal. I absolutely love your perspective, and how you kind of play along on piano without trying to steal the show, please, react to more slipknot and keep up the good work.
It may have been written about a partner, but the song has actually since come to be about Paul Grey. He was the original bassist for Slipknot and died not long after the song came out.
I'd love to see you react to some Rise Against - Maybe something off of Nowhere Generation, the namesake or even "The Numbers". Really powerful sorta pissed off songs about the state of the world right now.
Howdy David! You did a good job describing how meaningful this song is. I have a vivid memory of a close friend and me walking at around midnight in the suburbs blasting metal when suddenly this song came up. We both stopped and looked around, and realized how silly and futile most things are and how nice it was to not really be doing much of anything but being with one another. Good times. Thanks for giving this tune a good showing.
Caleb from Beartooth has a pretty emotional speech before they play the song Disease live and that kinda goes with what you said earlier in the video. If you want more of that, then I recommend watching their live performance of it with the speech
i love this song and the lyrics so much. one of my favourite bands is every time i die and they have a bunch of songs that approach really heavy subjects (pretty much the whole of the "low teens" album but particularly "petal" and "map change"), they've just dropped a new single that i think you'd really like. it's called post-boredom if you'd like to check it out (i am also ready, willing and available to gush about what the lyrics are about if you'd like any context)
You talk about appreciating emotion transmitted through performance, please please please, check out Aftermath by The Ghost Inside. Not a dry eye in the house.
Now I wish you would do a breakdown/ reaction to Architect's performance at Reading I believe it was? Huge inspirational speech and to go into a song like Gone with the wind? My goodness 🙌
I've been watching your channel for a while now. I love what you're doing and the insight and wisdom that you add to the songs is amazing. If I can make a recommendation: Band: The Academic Song: Bear Claws (Live Looper Edition) The song is really good, but I believe this to be super interesting because of what they did with it (don't want to spoil anything).
Talking about putting some emotions in performances, you should take a look at this Japanese singer called LiSA. The piano/voice on the "first take" versions are phenomal !! Here's the songs : - Homura (first take version) - Gurenge (first take version)
It's funny you mentioned him taking a bathroom break because when I saw his solo show (the tour before this one) he came out to read from his book, he did a Q&A, and then he said "We're going to take a break because I have to go take a dump and when I get back I'll play you some songs."
You’ve done it again David, great as always It’d be cool if you could fit some Pendulum reactions into the schedule. A few good songs to start with are Witchcraft, Crush, Granite and The Fountain (I think you’d dig that one a lot)
This was such an emotional performance. Though i have to say, not enough people are talking abt how the crowd really added to the ambience of this song. I absolutely agree. Crowd participation is exhilirating, especially when they're singing in tune and in time. It gives that extra oomph to a performance.
I could hear him holding back tears
One of my absolute favorite things about this live version is the held out yell from the crowd at 6:12 . It adds so much ambience.

You talk about appreciating emotion transmitted through performance, please please please, check out Aftermath by The Ghost Inside. Not a dry eye in the house.
The official music video for this song is a masterpiece that includes the incomparable Malcom McDowell.
Your piano playing is so beautiful!
Ty dear ❤️
Now I wish you would do a breakdown/ reaction to Architect's performance at Reading I believe it was? Huge inspirational speech and to go into a song like Gone with the wind? My goodness 🙌
After this emotional song this cover will definitely lift up your mood Corey Taylor - Sponge Bob Square Pants
I've been watching your channel for a while now. I love what you're doing and the insight and wisdom that you add to the songs is amazing. If I can make a recommendation:
Band: The Academic
Song: Bear Claws (Live Looper Edition)
The song is really good, but I believe this to be super interesting because of what they did with it (don't want to spoil anything).
Talking about putting some emotions in performances, you should take a look at this Japanese singer called LiSA.
The piano/voice on the "first take" versions are phenomal !!
Here's the songs :
- Homura (first take version)
- Gurenge (first take version)
The best reaction !
You must listen to Bother live from the same performance as this one!
Another great video!
It's funny you mentioned him taking a bathroom break because when I saw his solo show (the tour before this one) he came out to read from his book, he did a Q&A, and then he said "We're going to take a break because I have to go take a dump and when I get back I'll play you some songs."
Lolololol, that’s some truth right there!
You’ve done it again David, great as always
It’d be cool if you could fit some Pendulum reactions into the schedule. A few good songs to start with are Witchcraft, Crush, Granite and The Fountain (I think you’d dig that one a lot)
It’s a slipknot song from the all hope is gone record
The way you play along I'd almost love to see you collab with someone like Jonathan Young to cover this song, haha.
Good to hear your insights again David, react to TesseracT-Hexes (live in studio) pleaseee.
You should listen to whitechapel Bring me home, or Hickory Creek. Both will make you cry!
