prerecorded the drum solo then played the piano part along with it using headphones. I omitted repeats in the score below which I feel is more appropriate to a piano solo.
In this recording I used the 4th harmonic pedal only invented by Denis de La Rochefordière.
Practice tips:
You may be familiar with the Black Eyed Peas song "Dum Diddly"
"Dum diddley dum dum diddley dum dum diddley dum dum diddley diddley".
To begin Bolero a good place to start is to repeat over and over:
Dum diddly
Dum diddly
Dum dum dum
Diddly dum
Diddly diddly diddly (and back to the beginning and repeat)
You can also tap on a table or a drum if you have one as you say the above.
Practice the right hand separately, then, before you play the left and right hand together as written, make a transition practice step by playing only the first note of each beat in the left hand along with the right hand. This saves tiring your left hand with repetition but still gets your hand used to finding the bass hand positions.

When I listen to the song I feel like it represents a unique life with its unplanned and messy failures. Then everything comes back together in success and confidence only to be followed by more failures. In the end your successes are more profound but then you die only to be left by your legacy whether in memory by friends or just itched in a tombstone.
I cannot imagine a better way to play this. Unbelievable!

There must be at least one repetition, because Ravel wrote the music of first three pages of the first part and the repetition of the first part different from each other. He intended there to be a contrast between the first statement of the opening and all subsequent repetitions. So the version is too truncated, possibly because the pianist wanted to include two versions in his TH-cam clip. The second version with the drum sounds better, and the piano part is more sensitive too. A good performance, and the incessant rhythm of the accompaniment is effective and the build up in dynamic intensity at the end done well.

TRICKY RHYTHMS! IMPRESSIVE AND LOVELY!
ladypodtron the overall feel is easy to play i just think of it as a slow 3. however those annoying triplets over semiquavers...i hate trying to play those rhythms like in fantasie impromptu for example

Miss Capri have yu heard fantasie impromptu how do you suggest to learn the feel? I can play all thse notes in fantasie imporinptu but they have to be together lol
Oh, I've heard it all right, but never learned it. He has a great tutorial on it, though. He says when you're learning it to accent the notes that fall on the beats until you get used to where they are supposed to go, and then the rest will follow. One of the most interesting things about that piece, he pointed out, was that the part of the right hand that goes really high, depends back using the notes of the cadenza from Beethoven's third movement of the Moonlight Sonata. Like wow! Hadn't even noticed that before! :)
I'm just starting to work on the lovely Sibelius Romance in D. Flat now. That's a challenge and a half if you want to learn it by ear. The rhythm isn't too hard to get, but that cadenza makes my head explode. I found a tutorial that goes through it slowly, after much searching on TH-cam.

Ooh, this reminds me.. I absolutely *LOVE* Aziza's version, especially her Burghausen live performance (although she tripped a little bit; also, it's hard to find it on the net), but the studio recording is great too. I'd love to learn it (maybe without the crazy solo parts), or at least see you (or anybody else) take a shot at it.
wow thats great :D .. made me instantly start to learn this piece :) .. and i am a bit proud to say that i have quite an old "original" branga piano score published by durand from around 1930 (the paper already got a bit "crispy" unfortunately..) which i herited from my grandma :) .. but looks exactly the same as in the video ;)

It definitely loses something without the percussion, but imo it also gains a sort of.... 'hypnotic' quality, maybe? I'm not a musician, but I can't really detect a 'melody' as such - people won't be humming it after they hear it for the first time, but it's still engaging. Love this piece.

Trivia: Nintendo almost used Bolero as the theme of The Legend of Zelda in 1986, then discovered its copyright expired a month later than they thought (he died December 1937). It's not a bad piece, but I'm glad they didn't. The original theme they went with is iconic.

Why is this song such a bop?
Does any Music Theorist know what kind of Overhanging Scale Ravel uses toward the end of Bolero (also faithfully done in the 2-piano version)? It's like those old organs or pan-flutes that's a 6th or a 9th over the main melody. Weirdly beautiful. Phrygian mode??
I'm guessing some sort of blues scale because that's what this whole song is based off of
modes used:
Ionian (major scale)
Mixolydian
Phrygian
(Mixolydian ♭6)
(Phrygian Dominant)
The melody occasionally ‘borrows’ notes from each mode in the same passage so it's up for grabs whether it's Mixolydian, then for 1 note it's Phrygian - or you might say it's Mixolydian ♭6 - both are correct..
The bit with the evocative piccolos / pan-pipes I think is parallel diminished triads harmonising the melody? (which makes for a rather chromatic sound over alternating C / C9 chords) - the melody in that bit is switching between Mixolydian and Phrygian.
(This is as far as I can make out by ear - don’t shoot me!)

au secours, j'ai un véritable problème pour caler les temps, j'arrive pas à placer mes durées de notes dans un temps, qui peut m'aider, car si je me souviens bien, une noire fait un temps. quand je tente d'écrire les notes d'un temps, je sors de la durée du temps, j'utilise CUBASE pour reproduire la partition.

big fan of paul, cant stand ravel
that was a huge disappointment. not about the performance maybe, but about the arrangement itself. I so wanted to hear the crazy ravel harmonies, parallel dominant sevenths, that part where piccolo plays the parallel fifth. I guess I will make my own arrangement. Maybe for four hands or two pianos.

I expected this to bore me, it did. I was not surprised that Ravel's most boring piece without the one aspect making it interesting would be boring without that aspect.
