Cultural Significance & Struggle (20th Century) Under apartheid, the Kaapse Klopse became a symbol of resistance, resilience, and pride for marginalized communities. Despite efforts to suppress the event, it persisted and grew stronger. Many famous South African musicians, like Taliep Petersen and Abdullah Ibrahim, were influenced by Klopse-style music. Modern-Day Kaapse Klopse Today, thousands of minstrels, known as Klopse, parade through the streets of Cape Town, dressed in dazzling costumes, playing banjos, trumpets, drums, and tambourines while singing traditional Goema music. Teams or "troupes" compete in categories of music, dance, and performance, keeping the legacy alive.
