Waitpinga has been fishing good, there are small to small legal sized fish there also some nice size ones getting caught too. All the best and now the weather has settled it will be nice to get down there. I have been using cockle and pilchard on the same rig. Cheers

Excellent, informative video mate. So much love for this type of content. Also, you and I must be some of the very few people still using blood knots!!
Hi Malu Hunter, Thanks mate nice to hear. The old blood knot been around for years and very good as you know. Did you know its called the blood knot because it use to be tied on the end of a whip to draw blood a long time ago, a bit of trivia.
Fantastic video David . I would definitely like to have a go at making those fishcakes myself. Look forward to watching more of your videos in the future, they are great.
Thank you so much Ash, so sorry late reply I have just found your 2 messages in my held for spam section, youtube do funny things sometimes. Yes them fish cakes are really nice looking forward to my next lot actually. Thank you for watching and happy to hear you are enjoying. Cheers David

Absolutely the best fishing channel. Great presentation, very clear explanation and love how you take your time to explain and all the extra information you give out baring in mind we are all inexperienced anglers. Otherwise wouldn't be here. Hate when TH-camrs explain quick and barely give any info and spend more time fishing without actually teaching anything. If I catch my first game fish I'll definitely owe one to you. Thank you sir. Stay blessed. From Perth.

Hi Liam, thanks for saying mate. If you mean trying to catch beach worms at Goolwa beach, you won't find any there but I have heard there is another type of worm there but much smaller. If you mean using beach worms there for bait a mulloway or anything else will gobble them up.

Hey Dave, I've been down Goolwa Beach a few times with no luck, generally just using twisty lures. I'm going to give this a shot and head over to waits! Thanks so much!!
G'day Mike, thank you for watching and commenting mate. Good to hear you are going to give Waits a go. It's a beautiful beach and very rarely lets me down catching a feed, it is my local beach nearly on my door step. Copy my rig and make some burley springs (I have a video on how to make them) I have a few videos fishing down there with just pilchards or just cockle and both at the same time and I always use the burley spring. read the beach and fish a gutter next to a sand bar under a bit of white water and away you go. Have fun Mike let me know how you go if you like. Cheers David. P.S halco twisty lures are good also at waits but bait is more reliable but a flick with a lure is always worth a go.

Hi Antipodean33, Good to hear from you and thank you. Well you were hooking them so you were doing something right, tommies are notorious for dropping off can I recomend trying a number 8 suicide style hook or a number 6 if they are a reasonable size. A wide gaped hook can help hold them on better. Good eating tommies. All the best mate.

@@jamiegene1 To be honest I have caught quite a few mulloway and only one on worms and that was in the Onkaparinga river. Fishing is funny sometimes I have caught lots and lots of worms and used them in most all fishing situations including mulloway in the surf, and because everything else loves worms they never lasted on the hook long enough and you do go through quite a lot of worms, but if there was a mulloway around at the time it would have gobbled up the worms like there was no tomorrow, thats the funny thing about fishing there was never a mulloway around when I used worms for them, but I have caught mulloway on just about everything else. Next time mulloway fishing(not too often these days) I shall take worms again.

m8, we've all heard the saying "right place, right time", so just when I'm getting back into salmon fishing, after a long hiatus, I stumbled across your vid. I'm spending the winter on the western pen, salmon comp starting next month, but up until now I've been using lures, so finding this is perfect timing, because I'm a little longer in the tooth and can't cast lures all day, stiff rod doesn't help, but really wanted to find a setup that will work with these monsters over here. Subbed 👍
G'day mate, thank you for watching and Subscribing glad you found a salmon rig you like for the west coast big salmon, its a good rig that big salmon\mulloway rig, you could lighten the hook trace if you like to maybe 40/60lb being most likely only catching salmon, also the 3 way swivel single bait rig would be good too. I would use the running sinker rig though. All the best in the comp mate....Cheers David.
Hi matey, Waitpinga is one of them beaches that changes a lot with the rips and the surf. when you arrive to fish you have to look for the deeper water to cast your line into, you will see places where the waves break all of the time that is where the sand bars are(shallow water) and you will see places where the water is calmer with no waves breaking that is where you will find the deeper water called gutters and channels ideal places to cast your line. the most comfortable weather conditions to fish there is when the wind is blowing from the north thats when most people go there, but you can catch fish there in all weather, my favourite is cold and windy from the south there are less people there in those uncomfortable fishy conditions. hope that has helped mate.
Great video Dave. What is the best tide times to fish there? I went for a look at Waitpinga a month ago as we were in Victor for the day so thought I'd check it out after watching your other videos. Hopefully soon we can get there for a fish!
Hi Kevin, thank you for your comment. Generally at Waitpinga the tide doesn't matter down there the tide is normally running out in late afternoon with high tide around midnight so generally low tide is in the morning and high late morning early afternoon, but they change around the dodge which can also be good the main time is the crack of dawn and mid to late afternoon till dark and into the dark if you like, the main ingredient is as you probably know being able to get you line into a reasonable gutter or channel it can be quite reliable during the winter time.
Worth the wait mate. Great video. Some handy tips and hints in there. Cant wait to get all the right gear to do beach fishing, im only set up for jetty and small boat fishing. So it will take some time and dollars to get all the gear for Salmon fishing at Waits. Do you have anything in line for your next video?
Is there any decent gear at reasonable prices you can reccomend to get me setup? I do have a Shimano Sienna 4000 reel would this be ok, and then i just need a 10 or 12 foot rod? Cheers David
Hi Darren thank you glad you enjoyed it mate, can I recommend you looking at the Penn spinfisher ssm price between 70 and 90 dollars shop around very good reel especially for salmon jetty and beach fishing. Also can I recommend a Wilson 4120 10 and a half foot rod, also ideal for jetty and surf and rocks they are reasonably priced and my choice of rod. My next video hmm good question I get so much stuff in my head so I think we will have to wait and see. No sorry your Shimano Sienna won't do the job only light lure fishing or bait, you need a reel capable of holding 10kg line. hope thats helped mate
@@davidsheldonfishing9726 thank you for the reply buddy. I didnt think my Sienna reel would do the job. I've had a quick google on the Penn Spinfisher ssm reels, but there are a few, excuse my lack of knowledge, but what one of the range would you suggest? I think there was a 650, 750 850 and 950ssm? Wilson 4120, sounds like a good allrounder, jetty, surf and rocks i like that idea, i will look into these also, would it also be the of choice for the fishing you have done in one of your other videos, catching yellowfin, tommies and mullet, between Normanville and Wirrina near the pine trees? ;) cheers.
Sorry for the million questions mate, but i just wanna make sure im doing things right. I do have 30lb mono for the rigs and 30lb braid for reel will this be ok? Just in the video you have 30lb braid for reel and 35lb mono for rigs. cheers
Hi Darren, can I recommend the 750ssm because if you put braid on it around 20lb-30lb you would have enough line to also use it for mulloway. The 4120 Wilson is really a stronger type rod designed for lure fishing also bait fishing for salmon ok for mulloway too. Down at that place near Normanville you Sienna and your light boat rods will do the job the 4120 is a bit tough for that.
Hi Truong Nguyen, Thanks mate. Ha Ha getting the gear ready hey, well yes get down there and you have a good chance of getting a feed and some fun. This was last week and I know of quite a few being caught all nice plump fish with the occasional big fellow. Go get em. it will get popular dow there as the word gets out.
Hi 664 downunder thanks mate and sorry late reply, no I didn't do any voice over I have often wondered myself how to do that when I get a bit more time I'm getting my son to help me lol. Sounds like we both have got a bit to learn, do you watch Cavy he has started doing a bit of voice over in not to long ago uploads and his editing is getting so good the start of his last upload is Awesome. Sorry I can't help you there.
Hello David, went and bought some of your gents today to go tommy/mullet fishing on the end of the jetty up at garden island in port Adelaide. Cast my line out into the middle and had what I thought was a tommy on the line when what I believe, and my friend, to be, a man eating mulloway. The monster gobbed it down and went air borne before bloody nearly spooling me and snapping my line. My knee buckled and I almost, creamed my jocks... you raised those gents well! Now I'm here learning how to tie that mulloway rig of yours in an attempt to catch it. Do you think a 4000 reel and my grandfathers big old surf rod will do the trick? P.S I have only just started fishing again (19yr old) and your videos have made a very helpful and smooth transition into this great hobby. Look forward to seeing more videos from you (maybe a mulloway tutorial? or some tips?) much appreciated and ALL THE BEST!
G'day mate, that is a great fishing story one you won't ever forget I have a few of them too. I had a look at garden island and saw a jetty that runs parallel to the shore is that the place if so it looks good yes give the rig on the video a go and a small live Tommy would be good fished with a single 5\0 suicide hook placed above it's lateral line just behind it' head or two hooks if you like, and a 6\0 hook if it's a large Tommy. Keep a few alive in a bucket with a aerator or just frequently pour some fresh water in to oxygenate the water, or use pilchard, or strips of squid you could lighten your trace line to 40-60pound supple fluorocarbon. Also you could give a float a go a squid float or a cigar float with a glow light stuck in it (you will have to stab your float carefully with a knife to get your glo light in) at night time and some diced up pilchards thrown out occasionally and even a burly bag hanging off the railing you will have small fish every where maybe and predators not far behind. When I can get back into fishing myself I have planned to do a mulloway video it will happen eventually. But yes get out there and catch one it is the best feeling let it go or eat it and enjoy they are delicious. Cheers David
Also your Grandfathers surf rod will be ok the reel will be ok if you have 300mtrs of line 250mtres will be ok for medium fish but the big ones can take a lot of line on there first run especially with the run of the tide plus best times to fish is one hour each side of the tide high or low tide including when the tide stops running.
You made a burley spring to use on a float by cutting a commercial one in half. Can you refer me to the video that explained how you did it. Thank you.
Hello Jeff, with the commercial burley spring remove the centre wire and cut the spring in half, with your pliers shape the cut end so its like the other end then if you like you can re size the centre wire to fit back in one of your smaller springs and use a swivel or shape another piece of wire for the other. The video I show the spring in is, Fishing for Australian herring or Tommy ruff cape Jervis, also fishing for garfish with flavoured maggots. All the best with that Jeff and I hope I have helped.
them fish cakes are really good a great way to use a larger salmon and its amazing how many fish cakes can be made. Enjoy when you try Ian and hope you have had a nice day mate. Cheers David

Yes, you can simmer in milk for 4 minutes, add a knob of butter if you like, for a creamier taste. Yours look so delish, Thai fish cakes are another alternative if you have plenty of fish...Thanks again for a great video...
G'day James thanks mate.It did look good didn't it, and yes it tasted how it looked. If you haven't tried you must they are fantastic. From state to state bag limits are so different we are also allowed 20 small ones 21cm long thats a lot of fish combined with 10 big ones. I will limit my catch depending on size. I will be trying the milk it sounds nice what your saying, also thought about trying Thai fish cakes they look yummy too. Thanks for commenting James.
Hi Edwin, to be honest I don't know. I only do it because my mum use to put it in and is see them all do it on master shef and others, interesting because the potatoes don't taste salty or the fish. I think ill google it.
Hi mate, happy to hear you enjoyed the video and the fish cakes are delicious, yes they are made with the Australian salmon most people say are not very nice they are very underrated. I generally use the larger salmon for fish cakes and curries and the smaller ones beer battered or crumbed also very nice. I do have a filleting Australian salmon video you might find interesting. Thank you for watching and commenting now go catch some salmon and enjoy. Cheers!
Hi, where the wave breaks is where the sand bars are and where the wave dose not break is the deeper water. I like to cast on the edge of the sand bars in the deeper water known as channels and gutters. Sometimes you will find what I call channels some people call gutters running along the edge of the beach and then turning and running out to sea, at the back of them channels(gutters) there is always a sand bar shallow water where the waves are breaking these waves often produce white foamy water(known as white water) which runs over the top of the deep channels what run along the edge of a beach, fishing whats called under that white water in the channel is also a very good place to fish. I have a video called Australian Salmon fishing Waitpinga beach SA with bait part one, at 7:56 I say where I like to cast my line you might find that helpful . Happy fishing.
Hi David, another best quality fishing video. Learned heaps from the tommy rig/jetty fishing and now this one Would like to ask as a beginner in surf fishing. Which surf rod do you recommend? There are heaps of surf rod and reel combo under $150 in bcf/anaconda do you reckon they are good? Or worth investing in a more dearer gear? Cheers
Hi Philip, rod and reel combos are good to get people out there and started and the more you like fishing you probably would like to upgrade to something a bit nicer. I have a fishing rod called the Penn Prevail 10ft long, line 10-15kg, cast weight 30-120gm nice off waitpinga beach there are longer models if you would like a bit more length, price close to around 160 dollars you could put a nice light 4000-6000 reel on that, maybe look at what Penn or Shimano, or Daiwa have to offer, the Penn spin fisher is well prised been around for a few years the Penn slammer is the next step up. I use the Daiwa LT 6000 with 30lb braid also the Daiwa Soll II 4000 20lb braid. When its time to chase a mulloway you will have to step up the reel but the rod will do the job. Hope that has helped Philip

Hi Jess, thank you for watching. This was filmed with a GoPro 7 black one problem with it, when I haven't used it for a short while I have to remove the battery and put back in to reset it, other than that when filming with it, it is responsive and haven't had any trouble with it very happy, I also have now a GoPro 9 my latest video making sinkers I used that one and I'm very happy with that one too, it has a couple more functions, the touch screen can be a little bit unresponsive sometimes but thats the only draw back. both nice cameras. Also I'm far from being a expert at this but it is really fun.

Hi mate, I will have to say 4oz when the rip is strong usually when the surf is big, most times I will use 3oz but when possible I will use 2oz sometimes its nice to have a lighter sinker on. Thank you for watching my videos and good to hear you enjoy them.
HI DAVID,,,,,,,ON YOUR SURF RIGS HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT HOOK SNOOD,,, SPREADER 'S,,,,,TO STOP THE FISH HOOKS FROM TANGLING UP ,,,,,ARE THEY ANY GOOD TO USE,,, OR JUST A WAIST OF TIME
Hello Peter, I remember the wire snood's from years gone by to hold and spread your hook snood away from the main line trace also other hooks to help stop the hook snood from twisting, they did work. I'm not too sure on the type of technique you are referring to I'm hoping this is what you mean. On my salmon surf rig I use heavier line 35lb it helps reduce tangles in the turbulent surf so I'm happy with that.
Thanks David. 58m goes buy pretty quick atm. With the second hook setup when you say put it wherever you like, is that based on length of pilchards? Do you put a whole one on the 2 hooks. Just keen to see how you use that with pilchards and why you use it instead of 3 ganged (1 hook !#%@/) Cheers

Yes tie hook wherever you like to suit your bait, I've tied my 2 x 1\0 hooks to suit half pilchard, or2 x 3\0-5\0 spaced a bit further apart to suit a whole not to large pilchard or 3 x 5\0 to suit whole larger pilchard for larger fish or 2x5\0 if like. Over here in S.A we don't catch to many tailor they are quite rare, thats why we tend not to use ganged hooks, Thats my theory anyway, on my video- salmon fishing Waitpinga I give a demo on how I put half pilchard on, I use the same way for whole pilchard but run the hook more down the middle of the pilchard. Up to 5 ganged hooks class as 1 hook WOW. Thanks for watching and commenting... Cheers David
Hi Ashley thanks for saying mate. My favourite was the regular but with a bit of tweaking on the curry one I think it would be as good. Yes they are worth while thats for sure we love them. Plus freeze your extras for future meals yum.
Hi Urmi Traders, there are a few different ways to fish for salmon large and small the type of fishing technique used wether it be bait, lure, light sinker, heavier sinker, running sinker, float fishing even no sinker at all. Also what trace line to use light or heavy is all down to the location being fished and weather conditions. Over time i am going to cover all the different ways. Bait being used also plays a big part. There are some large salmon in West Lakes try fishing without a sinker with small pilchard or blue bait use a small running sinker if you need too, also try a float, fish around 60cm deep or try deeper with a legal sized live bait muller or small salmon trout and don't forget the burley mushed up pilchards. All the best mate.
@@urmitraders8237 G'day mate you will have to get some pilchards thaw them out and squash and mush them up with your hands you could add some blended bread or buy some bread crumbs to mix with it. in West lakes I think the big salmon would be on the move all the time swimming around the lake, you need to create some interest in you fishing area to bring in the smaller fish and the bigger fish will follow. Also a float would be good for pilchard too. You could easily end up catching a big bream or even a mulloway.
G'day mate, I have a couple of videos showing Waitpinga beach and Parsons beach they are roughly 1 hours drive from Adelaide very popular also South port beach closer to Adelaide can be ok also Port Noarlunga Jetty only in rough south west storms can be good, Browns Beach york Peninsula is very popular to name a few.
Hey mate i’m in Victoria and plan on heading to mornington peninsula, Gunnamata beach to go surf fishing next week for some Salmon, are Salmon around this time or the year? cheers,
G'day mate, yes you should have a very good chance of getting onto a few salmon this time of the year. Looks like a nice beach Gunnamata beach, it will be nice being there also can I suggest giving the burley spring a go with whatever rig you choose to use.
@@cem1099 Hi mate, I make my own burley springs I do have a video on how to make them. I use them for a lot of my fishing and usually squeeze pilchard into them when salmon fishing and they have proved themselves very good at attracting the near by fish to your fishing area and help to increase your catch rate. on my fishing at waitpinga beach videos I am using a burley spring. your best fishing will be early morning and later in the afternoon probably, unless it is a overcast day and they might hang around longer. All the best and tight lines.....David

@@davidsheldonfishing9726 Do you still use worms for mulloway?

Subbed 👍
G'day mate, thank you for watching and Subscribing glad you found a salmon rig you like for the west coast big salmon, its a good rig that
big salmon\mulloway rig, you could lighten the hook trace if you like to maybe 40/60lb being most likely only catching salmon, also the 3 way swivel single bait rig would be good too. I would use the running sinker rig though. All the best in the comp mate....Cheers David.
Great vid
THANKS! Joel
G'D Master, Good to see you again. Keep healthy!
Hi lun you stay healthy to my fishy friend. Thanks mate
Hey bro!
Loved the video, can you keep me up to date with waitpinga salmon spots along the beach and the preferred weather conditions. 👍🏼👍🏼
Generally at Waitpinga the tide doesn't matter down there the tide is normally running out in late afternoon with high tide around midnight so generally low tide is in the morning and high late morning early afternoon, but they change around the dodge which can also be good the main time is the crack of dawn and mid to late afternoon till dark and into the dark if you like, the main ingredient is as you probably know being able to get you line into a reasonable gutter or channel it can be quite reliable during the winter time.
great video
thank you I van, nice to hear you enjoyed watching.
Awesome video.getting my gear ready now so I can hit up waits. Was this recent?
Hi Truong Nguyen, Thanks mate. Ha Ha getting the gear ready hey, well yes get down there and you have a good chance of getting a feed and some fun. This was last week and I know of quite a few being caught all nice plump fish with the occasional big fellow. Go get em. it will get popular dow there as the word gets out.
Great video mate well done !. How did u get your extra voice audio when you were at the beach ??
Hi 664 downunder thanks mate and sorry late reply, no I didn't do any voice over I have often wondered myself how to do that when I get a bit more time I'm getting my son to help me lol. Sounds like we both have got a bit to learn, do you watch Cavy he has started doing a bit of voice over in not to long ago uploads and his editing is getting so good the start of his last upload is Awesome. Sorry I can't help you there.
Keep up the great work
Hello David, went and bought some of your gents today to go tommy/mullet fishing on the end of the jetty up at garden island in port Adelaide.
Like 18 from me David.
Thanks for your support and stay safe my friend 🙏
Hi liar thank you, and thanks for the support too. You stay safe too my friend, its wow isn't it who would have imagined.
That made me hungry!
them fish cakes are really good a great way to use a larger salmon and its amazing how many fish cakes can be made. Enjoy when you try Ian and hope you have had a nice day mate. Cheers David

I have been trying to get down the beach ( Sydney area ) and catch a few salmon for fish cakes ( and also smoking ) but it is either blowing a gale or no swell ! I’m back to work this week and i can guarantee the conditions during the week will be perfect then turn bad by Friday!
@@ianbertenshaw4350 Hopefully things will improve and you get your chance, its windy as over SA today. I have been having a run like that when I think about fishing something always comes up. we will get there
Hi David,
How good did that fish cake look with the peas, corn and carrots when you first cut it with the fork, you could not buy anything that good, great video...Shame but the bag limit's only 4 Salmon in WA🙁!
Brilliant
Thank you again, all the best with your fishing.
.....Cheers David
Love the vid, Is there a reason to boil the fish and potatoes in salt water?
Hi Edwin, to be honest I don't know. I only do it because my mum use to put it in and is see them all do it on master shef and others, interesting because the potatoes don't taste salty or the fish. I think ill google it.
Awesome thanks a lot they look delicious, is this made from the salmon that people say isn’t good eating?
Hi mate, happy to hear you enjoyed the video and the fish cakes are delicious, yes they are made with the Australian salmon most people say are not very nice they are very underrated. I generally use the larger salmon for fish cakes and curries and the smaller ones beer battered or crumbed also very nice. I do have a filleting Australian salmon video you might find interesting. Thank you for watching and commenting now go catch some salmon and enjoy. Cheers!
@@davidsheldonfishing9726 thank you very much I sure will and I’ll be using this video
Cheers Mate!
My pleasure mate.
Hi, do you cast where the wave breaks or where do you cast?
@@davidsheldonfishing9726 Thank you very much David. I will look at that video.
good stuff mate thanks .
Thanks matey.
Hi David, another best quality fishing video. Learned heaps from the tommy rig/jetty fishing and now this one
Would like to ask as a beginner in surf fishing.
@@davidsheldonfishing9726 hi David, what a legend for sending this detailed advice. I’ll look into it and see how i go. Omg chasing mulloway is a dream but i reckon i’ll give it a year or so. Good thing tho im just located near the onk river like less than 5 minutes away. How i wish i can fish with you hahaha.

Hey dave just wondering what camera are you using thanks and also love the vids 🤙🏻
Thanks allot for that i do allot of fishing myself and just want to start filming it and maybe making a channel myself if the footage is good enough
@@jessscibo9773 sounds good Jess , like i said its fun. I've just started using imovie video editing and slowly learning it and wow its much better than what i had before. All the best Jess.....David
I shal keep that in mind dave , Whats the salmon fishing like in sa atm here in vic i have been catching heaps of bay trout (salmon trout)
@@jessscibo9773 I haven' been out trying lately I will be trying this week, I'm sure there will be some salmon or salmon trout waiting for me at my local beach. Love a feed of salmon\ salmon trout. Stay tuned for my next video, and be sure to let me know if you end up starting a channel.
Do you fish at port Lincoln SA is that close to you?
Hi again, Port Lincoln is roughly 11 hours from me, wish it was closer
Thank you! 😀
Thank you for watching and commenting. catch some Salmon this winter.
hi david..star sinkers off waits?...2oz or 3 or 4oz? for those conditions?..love ya vods mate
@davidsheldonfishing9726,,,,,, hi David,,,,,,,,, yes it sure is exactly what I mean thank you very much
Thanks David. 58m goes buy pretty quick atm. With the second hook setup when you say put it wherever you like, is that based on length of pilchards? Do you put a whole one on the 2 hooks. Just keen to see how you use that with pilchards and why you use it instead of 3 ganged (1 hook !#%@/)
Cheers
Hi Jo Blogs, thanks mate yes I thought some folk would hopefully like a long one considering.
Nice info David. What was your favourite, regular or curry? Never tried curry ones before, they look the goods tho.
Hi Ashley thanks for saying mate. My favourite was the regular but with a bit of tweaking on the curry one I think it would be as good. Yes they are worth while thats for sure we love them. Plus freeze your extras for future meals yum.
I am really interested in Salmon fishing. I caught one in west lakes. Can you teach me ? :D
@@davidsheldonfishing9726 where can I find mushed pilchards ?
@@urmitraders8237 G'day mate you will have to get some pilchards thaw them out and squash and mush them up with your hands you could add some blended bread or buy some bread crumbs to mix with it. in West lakes I think the big salmon would be on the move all the time swimming around the lake, you need to create some interest in you fishing area to bring in the smaller fish and the bigger fish will follow. Also a float would be good for pilchard too. You could easily end up catching a big bream or even a mulloway.
@@davidsheldonfishing9726 should I use the mushed pilchard as bait for the rod or to attract the fish ?

G'day mate, yes you should have a very good chance of getting onto a few salmon this time of the year. Looks like a nice beach Gunnamata beach, it will be nice being there also can I suggest giving the burley spring a go with whatever rig you choose to use.
@@davidsheldonfishing9726 thanks for ur reply mate, what’s the purpose of a burley spring? and im planning on arriving at 7am and staying till 8pm
