Discord will literally lock anything behind a paywall. Heck, they even locked away primitive image manipulation, something you can access for free on almost any device. Not to mention themes, which can easily be created with just a few lines of CSS.

To clarify at 07:28, I was part of the team who tested this months before it came out, from what I recall, the button does work but it can take a few days to update everywhere same with removing / adding emojis, just takes a while to update this is according to the information I received, I haven't tested that myself
I actually got this feature like a month ago with no popup, and it was even buggier. I couldn't even add an emoji pack for most servers, and I could only add it if one of my friends with nitro had sent an emoji from that server (then I could click on it and select add emoji pack, which, again, didn't even appear half the time)

Even if this was a nitro only feature, minus the bugs, it's honestly a great feature. I'm at the server limit because I'm in a few emoji servers, that I can't leave because I like said emojis. This would simplify my discord server use while retaining my ability to use the emotes I want anywhere. Sad it's already being axed.

Not to mention that there were apps before telegram, mostly in the asian market that had sticker packs. Telegram literally did the same by being inspired by that idea. Telegram is not even in direct competition to discord, they have completely different audiences. discord never fails to disappoint. like, i know we have an ad-free free social platform, but man, make at least something free. it's just a single pack man. every single cool feature is now nitro. the only good features that are free are calls and servers. themes, good streaming quality, even emojis need your wallet. the worst out of all of them - even if i had money i can't buy it because i am russian lmao (they stopped payments from russia around a year ago. can't even claim free nitro because of this).
The entire platform is free. Free, server-hosted texting, voice calling, video calling, screensharing, image sharing, file sharing--all things which are very expensive to operate. Then they started making features Nitro exclusive to test the waters, now every new feature is an advertisement for Nitro. Windows Live/MSN Messenger, the most popular messenger before Skype, had global animated emoticons, games, drawing, and even allowed modding/skins, all for free. It came out in 1999. Discord's definitely speed running their enshittification by throwing away user goodwill for money. Hope they watch their back, a messenger more convenient might come and bench them like they did Skype.

I think the problem with a free emoji pack is because you could use a client mod to have multiple emoji packs - the mod could show infinite virtual emoji packs in the picker and just automatically join and leave the server to make it your actual emoji pack.
I always thought of making a bot edit my messages, in which keywords get replaced by emojis. For that, I would make a tag that first processes the input message, and then replace the initializer message's contents with the processed message. This enables me to use any emoji Blargbot is in, in any server Blargbot's tags work. (since you hate them) If Blargbot doesn't have "manage messages" permission, I would then make an embed with my processed message in, and then manually delete my own message.

here's how you would abuse the feature: just put every emoji into one pack by stealing emojis from different servers, and then adding them to a server of yours.
i really miss old discord when it used to be good and they cared about there users like nitro was just cosmetic stuff like you can join 200 servers instead of 100 etc and everyone got the new features and nitro got like a bonus like you can type longer text etc now it seems like discord doesnt care anymore

The weird thing is that emojii packs don't really have much use for nitro users beyond letting them use emojiis from servers they aren't in. It makes more sense to have a free pack available for Non-Nitro users.
no it makes perfect sense, for someone like me especially who is in 90 servers for different emojis. instead of needing to stay in all of them i can add their packs and leave and only be in about 10 servers (no i dont use all of those servers for emojis but im just too lazy to clean out the servers i dont use vs do use)

damn, my servers management account doesn't have nitro, and i was going to use this feature as a way to post our main servers emojis in our staff server for announcements, why discord, just why
I could use them for a while and what I did was to drop emotes in a channel in my personal server. I could click them and re-add the packs anytime. I knew they weren't going to allow free users to keep it afterwards and that it was going to be a pseudo nitro trial to get you hooked. Then right away whej it ended they offered those I think 2 free weeks (but it required you to add a valid payment option). About the privacy issues well, they should have made it private by default, but then few people would have used it, it'd had been way less effective. On the other hand, being able to use an emote from a server you aren't in, if not invite-only, you can join via the emote, so more users using your emotes means more exposure if people check them out and decide to join. Tbh it would be a nice add since they wanna monetize emotes and it'd be like limited nitro annoying enough to use so you are more tempted to get the full thing. You can't use animated emotes regardless anyway so it's not like they are giving much more for free. And 1 pack free vs 100 paid.
That feature would have done nothing to stop me from stealing everyone's emojis (minus that friend's face, maybe) and adding them to my private server that's only populated by me and Eggman's 70 alternative accounts.
There's some emojis I really like in a private server my friend group has, so im just gonna use my free pack on those ^^ Edit: oh nvm, I'll just stay poor Edit #2: If they made it so there's like a 1 or 2 month cooldown for switching your free emoji pack, that'd stop people from abusing it.
how about adding 3 favorite emojis from whatever server. 3 isnt too many, it can work and people still wants nitro ex: adding one troll face from "server1". a blue stoplight from your private server and one random animated dog from a big server.
another reason that i kinda thought of was that modded clients could use a script to add an emoji pack as you send an emoji, then once its sent the pack is removed allowing you to send actual custom emojis

i really miss old discord when it used to be good and they cared about there users like nitro was just cosmetic stuff like you can join 200 servers instead of 100 etc and everyone got the new features and nitro got like a bonus like you can type longer text etc now it seems like discord doesnt care anymore
finally i can leave a ton of servers that i only join for the emotes
I really wonder how much strength you need to consistently use discord without nitro, i just have it to download memes and videogame mods once in a month.

The weird thing is that emojii packs don't really have much use for nitro users beyond letting them use emojiis from servers they aren't in.
It makes more sense to have a free pack available for Non-Nitro users.
no it makes perfect sense, for someone like me especially who is in 90 servers for different emojis. instead of needing to stay in all of them i can add their packs and leave and only be in about 10 servers (no i dont use all of those servers for emojis but im just too lazy to clean out the servers i dont use vs do use)

It doesn't seem like that much of a benefit to the people that are in most of their servers for more than the emojiis, which is why it makes more sense, to me, to have a free pack for non Nitro users, but I see your point.
The idea of packs was great, if they weren't so stingy and up their own asses about it. Seriously, had they given free users access to 5 packs, that would have been the best thing they could have done.
at this point it doesnt matter what amount of free packs there should have been, because they removed it for non-nitro users anyways

funny enough i had this feature long before they ever announced it, then i lost it, never got it back.

I could use them for a while and what I did was to drop emotes in a channel in my personal server. I could click them and re-add the packs anytime. I knew they weren't going to allow free users to keep it afterwards and that it was going to be a pseudo nitro trial to get you hooked. Then right away whej it ended they offered those I think 2 free weeks (but it required you to add a valid payment option).
About the privacy issues well, they should have made it private by default, but then few people would have used it, it'd had been way less effective.
On the other hand, being able to use an emote from a server you aren't in, if not invite-only, you can join via the emote, so more users using your emotes means more exposure if people check them out and decide to join.
Tbh it would be a nice add since they wanna monetize emotes and it'd be like limited nitro annoying enough to use so you are more tempted to get the full thing. You can't use animated emotes regardless anyway so it's not like they are giving much more for free. And 1 pack free vs 100 paid.

That feature would have done nothing to stop me from stealing everyone's emojis (minus that friend's face, maybe) and adding them to my private server that's only populated by me and Eggman's 70 alternative accounts.

3 isnt too many, it can work and people still wants nitro
ex: adding one troll face from "server1". a blue stoplight from your private server and one random animated dog from a big server.
I reckon, that something that would make people buy nitro is, making you appear offline for certain people/discord servers. It would be busted.

another reason that i kinda thought of was that modded clients could use a script to add an emoji pack as you send an emoji, then once its sent the pack is removed allowing you to send actual custom emojis
i remember when i told my friend a while ago that custom backgrounds or anything custom was going to be locked behind a paywall instead of something nice for everyone

When I looked at Guilded. The issue is that they are not a 100% general chat platform like discord is. Unless they changed something the past few months. It’s not something for most people.
