My grandmother spoke of the huge crowds of people who attended his funeral; Valentino was adored by many in the 1920's and all mourned his early passing when he was still so young. Mention his name in 2018 and people still know who he is and the silent films he starred in.
We are very lucky to have this film. It was lost for 80 yrs until a reel was found in Holland and carefully restored. This is sensitively scored by the way. Not typical silent film score and effects but very effective. Rudy and Gloria would have loved it.
I could literally Stare at this man All Day and at the end of the day STILL be mesmerised...He gives the phrase "If looks could kill", a Whole New meaning!!!
Despite the overplayed Victorian conventions that we often saw in silent film acting - much of what Rudy did onscreen was natural, underplayed, and deeply moving...
I remember when she talked about Valentino telling her tile was best for the tango in Sunset Boulevard. Amazing how Hollywood starlets have been playing the same song for over a century.
I’m such a big fan of both . Swanson was such a fine woman and so talented and artistic . She’s one of the most fashionable women I’ve ever seen even after her movie career
I’m reading her book Swanson on Swanson now. It’s a fantastic book. I like to see how strong women of her generation became pioneers in different fields.

Valentino and Swanson were good friends off the set. She knew him when he had his first house in Whitley Heights. He was looking for a bigger house and she told him to check out a house she had seen on on a hillside that was for sale. He saw it, liked it, and bought it. And he named it Falcon Lair. But he didn't get to enjoy it for very long. He moved into the house in 1925, and he died in 1926.
This is very crazy, at that time no one thought that this film could be seen anywhere in the world, at any time and by anyone. I wonder what will be possible in 100 years.
