    Not true according to my personal experience. You can totally ask someone to be your mentor, not a stranger of course.

    I've had several mentors over the years and learned a large amount of valuable lessons from each and every one of them. From not making certain business decisions to fostering certain partnerships, a mentor can help guide you through your entrepreneurial journey.

    This is the first video Simon made that I disagree because I have experienced asking a coworker to mentor me when we were not very close and they helped me in a big way. I do agree with your comment that mentorship is reciprocal

    My experience of mentoring and being mentored is exactly as you are describing it Simon. These 'friendships' take time and need to happen naturally. My other bug bear is the can we meet so I can pick your brains from someone you've never met or heard of.

    This is so relatable. I have three people in my life who have become my mentors and I believe that I have somehow become their mentors as well. I am still learning a lot from each one of them. But, one thing I can definitely say with utmost certainty that they liking my raw viewpoints on different subjects and because those viewpoints are my self-expression. I want to dedicate this video to the three best mentors in my life who have seen me raising like a Phoenix and helped me in building my own unique unrefined voice. Three Cheers for Krish Ashok, Anoop Surendran, and Ranjithkumar! Hip-hip-hooray to all of them who have been providing their undivided attention, focus, faith, sincerity, authenticity, tenderness, kindness, hope, love and blessings for the past 7-8 months.
    I have in them learned the true meaning of a true guru (teacher) who actually is capable of making the life of a student worth living. I truly with my whole heart and soul want this planet to have more mentors like them from the very start of the journey which anyone takes in the path of self-discovery. They are really respectable and genuine and tender and they really from a very deep level care about my well being. They are super-humans I would say with no cape to flaunt. The society needs such super-humans like Krish Ashok, Anoop Surendran, and Ranjithkumar at this point in time. They are actually angels in my life & I am blessed & happy to know that they always want me to achieve good things & be successful in my life.

    Hi Simon. A great message, but, having worked in the mentoring field for over 20 years, I don't agree totally with you. Yes, it's important to know the person who will become your mentor one day, but it's actually an honor and a privilege to be asked by someone to be their mentor. And, you mention the mentor giving 'advice'. Advice is only given to a mentee as the very last resort - the spirit if mentoring involves guiding the mentee to appreciate they can solve their own problems/issues/challenges, the mentor being the non-judgmental, empathetic Cheerleader! Keep up the good work. Robin

      Guzinato r great point... this may be a problem only a famous person has. I'd be honored to be asked to mentor someone. Totally different dynamics than a friendship.

    Mentoring: Advising someone based on your previous experience
    Mentoring: a person with more experience, wisdom, and compassion investing in mutual giving, and shared learning
    Mentoring: someone that is Chosen/Respected, Safe/Transparent, Present/Available to advise based on past experience
    Mentoring: a person giving and receiving tactical advice and step-by-step instructions on how to achieve and result

    I disagree. Employers have a responsibility to be mentors. If their values conflict with a young employee, it's the employer's job to adjust and be a mentor to the employee. The employer has a responsibility to help the employee reach his or her goals. It doesn't matter if the employee's goals conflict with the employer's values. The employer still has a responsibility to be a mentor and help the employee reach those goals.

    I partly disagree. In an age where many people don't really think about mentorship in this way, sometimes you need to reach out. It definitely is wrong to ask someone famous to be your mentor; that's asking too much. In general, it doesn't hurt to mention that you would be honored if you could consider someone a mentor.

    • @daniel.adeyemi
      @daniel.adeyemi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't hurt but I'd rather you don't start with the mentor thingy.
      I think often asking the person for his/her opinion on certain subjects is a good way to go about it. It's an indirect way of saying, "Hey I value your insights and I believe I can learn from your perspective on certain issues". It's kinda the same thing a mentor would do but then it's less awkward or too direct.
      Different strokes for different strokes though. :-)

    If you want to have a friend, you must be a friend. Thus works for all aspects. It's a formula like a2+b2=c2. It is how the Almighty GOD made us. We need a mom. We need a dad. It can and will work without either or both, but something or someone must fill in the missing parts of the equation with something or someone. The "secret" to life is that there are NO "secrets". Just people walking around with elements missing from their life's equations. Some more fortunate than others that they fill in the blanks with love and patience ever looking for the "proper" pieces to insert. Some choose the other side and fill in their equations with sad, dark, hateful, unimaginable things. Mentors and mentoring is deep love and responsibility. It sometimes hurts to have to tell someone the obvious. Most people just will not participate in life.
