    Hey! Let's talk about the minimum starting equipment, my favorite knife projects, edge quenching and more. The knife is a karambit style knife hand-made from a craftsman wrench Mr. Luis Montez brought me for this purpose. Thanks, Luis. The steel was not hardenable, as expected but it still makes a stylish, decorative karambit.

    Two other things I think should be added to the shop necessities would be a vise and files; some of the most useful things ever.

    It takes a different stage of temperature to heat and temper that type of steel, a lot of wrenches have a lot of chromi-vandium steel in it, meaning not only does it give it that shine, but also makes is harden differently. They usually say how they was harden on the wrench, especially older ones. My grandfather had one that he broke, he had gotten from his from his artillery days in the army. It made a nice kitchen knife and harden nicely..., that said it took many tries to find its temperature ranges. LoL

    4:02 very accurate rose there, and better than the local artists I've seen do it who opt for less detail/smaller/mass production versions...they'll build an 8 foot tall animal out of spoons/forks.

    I figured I'd share something I found out recently since you mentioned you hadn't found any wrenches that fully harden yet.
    It seems that Snap-on wrenches (at least the half-moon box wrenches) harden up very well. The one I used for a karambit project earlier today got file hard after a quench in warm canola oil. I haven't finished working on it yet so I can't speak for edge retention, but as far as behavior the steel in the snap-on wrench seems to act a lot like older Nicholson files, but with higher chromium and a lot less rusting.
    If you can find some of those then they may make for some decent blade stock, at least for wrench karambits.

    This would be a perfect weapon to be included in a Mad Max film. Set designers take note!

    • @thehunter4876
      @thehunter4876 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wouldn't be because Mad Max is set in Australia or at the very least most of it was filmed here and a krambit is a Filipino weapon

    • @ce4130
      @ce4130 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +The hunter The Kawasaki KZ1000 didn't originate in Australia either. Fine, we'll just stick with edged boomerangs then.

    • @ce4130
      @ce4130 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +The hunter I'd guess with the exception of martial artists, karambits probably are a post internet thing downunder, but then, so are paracord bracelets. And speaking of Max's attire in Fury Road, the South African (not Australian) battle vest he wears was not issued until 1983 (between when Mad Max 2 and Beyond Thunderdome were released. So I don't know that the timeline of the Mad Max universe is tied down firmly. And besides all that, the weapon wouldn't have to be a 'true' karambit, the main point would be that it is an edged weapon crudely forged from an old spanner. But if it did resemble a karambit there are many examples in history of cultures separated by time and space separately arriving at very similar weapon designs.

      ***** So I'm a dumb ass who should think a bit more before I type anything :)

    • @ce4130
      @ce4130 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +The hunter Well, actually I could say the same thing, I just read up a bit on the timeline of the actual story (not the dates when the movies were released - derr!) and it seems that some semblance of civilisation was hanging on in the early to mid 80's or mid to late '90's, depending on the source, so it is conceivable that a SADF battle jacket could be issued and find it's way to Aus. for Max to pick up. Well done to the prop designers for that one, the battle jacket manages to modernise Max's look (echoes the transition to chest rigs seen in vehicle mounted desert warfare of the last 25 years) while still apparently staying period correct. I used to think the SADF kit was the coolest shit before all the MOLLE stuff became readily available.

    Tools are weapons in descueise, ppe is important, and loose clothes is a bad idea, I had grinder rip my shirt 👕 clean off me! Luckily that's all that happened, I did have a hard time explaining where my shirt went! Haha it's funny now, being I survived, but some with large equipment, didn't make it, just from a loose shirt or tie, and it happens fast! So all the young folks , you should think before you work, don't switch on equipment without thinking!!

    Great vid and format for the QnA. I have a question.
    Can you briefly explain how they forge welded hundreds of years ago before the invention of welding machines?
    Ive looked everywhere but people dont explain/show/do how you're supposed to keep multiple pieces of metal together as well as getting an even heat without tack welding them together as well as to a piece of rebar.
    Even if you could just reply to this message here that would be great as I cant afford a welding machine!

    Where on earth do you find an anvil or anvil-esque object for 5$? I got my first anvil for free because it belonged to my great, great grandfather way back when, but it's in bad shape and I don't have the know-how to restore it and make it a better anvil, all anvils I've seen for sale in my part of the woods (Norway and Scandinavia) is around 600 dollars for a brand new anvil, and anywhere from 120-->500 for used ones, depending on the weight. Then comes shipping, and I don't want to think about it.

      If quenching it in oil isn't enough to harden the metal, I wonder if using a more faster cooling solution (water, perhaps?) might do the trick.
