  • This video shows how I build my trot lines using some more advanced techniques and the reasoning behind it. The hooks in this video are 10/0 Gamakatsu octopus hooks and I also use 8/0 octopus circle hooks. These hooks are designed to be used with a Snell knot which requires some different rigging. Please feel free to ask questions.

I'm pretty new to trot lining and have made a number of dumb mistakes with how I went about rigging a line, but after watching your video I see now how easy it is to tie the beads in place as you do and I'm remaking both my trotlines right now! I don't use clips and do use double-line drops, and I really like how you made the cheater snells. I had mine as you showed originally but I've already done the cheater snell on all my drops as you demonstrate. Awesome! Thanks for the advice! Joe

I have never commented about anybodys way of fishing or rigging up, but I think I will at this time.
To start with, You are doing 90% of the same way I rig my lines. I like a double leader line , That allows me to change my hooks out, because one might be too large for the bait i'm using, or might be broke. Next, my main line is rigged a little different. I use a very heavy main line with swivels about 6 ft. apart because I like to keep my next fish in the water while i'm taking the one before . I tie two knots about an inch apart that my swivels can't slip over. They go around my main line like yours do. I use clips like you do. It's nice to be able to take all my hooks off of a throw line to deal with a large fish at hand. That helps from getting a hook in my hand, if the fish desides to go back to the bottom. There's a few things I do a little different, But, for the most part I'd say you are on the right track. Keep the good work up.

good job! I just tie a figure 8 knot on the inside of my hook, no snell needed

You should look into trotline box the best way in my opinion.

iwantosavemoney that's the only way to set a line. 500 hooks per box! Florida style!

I never use any expensive hooks or weights just because there are too many people who like to steal your set ups.

Just use trotline brads, instead of all that bead and knot tying.

Dennis Grisham I started to but this way they are adjustable and reusable. Also, you can alternante colors of beads and keep track of different baits. For instance use black beads on one drop and white beads on the next and use dough bait on the black beads and cut shad on the white.

The brass brads will rot the cheap white twisted twine... I use the braided twine, or tarred twine... I snell knot all my circle hooks...
Oklahoma is pretty liberal with trotline laws... 100 hooks per line, 3 lines per person, hooks much be 2 feet apart... awesome!!!
