Only a day lost and $310 out of pocket--that's about as good an outcome as you could've hoped for. Breakdowns are never good, but you guys handled it with aplomb. Of course you had some pretty good luck with the repair shops as well--it's always a huge relief to encounter a place that can fit you in and get you back on the road quickly. Happy trails!
Thank you for sharing your experience with RV repairs! It's always a relief when you find a repair shop that can get you back on the road quickly. Speaking of being prepared, have you considered investing in a reliable backup power solution for your outdoor adventures? The Segway Portable PowerStation Cube Series offers a massive capacity and fast recharging, making it a great choice for powering your devices and appliances during your camping trips. Happy trails!
Your brakes are wired to the left side only and are wired to the right side through the inside of the hollow axle tube. It reduces the amount of wiring and connections. Always do a brake check as soon as you shift into drive. On your brake sensitivity adjustment on your dash, there is a manual brake button. Just hold it in and you RV will stop you from moving telling you that your brakes are working. If it doesn't then get out and see why, like did you connect the 7 way plug or is the wiring cut.
I was thinking the same thing. As you can see the wires going into the axles. Same as our RV. Honestly fixing that wiring was super easy to learn to do.
A sense of humor helps, too. A few weeks ago I was given a flatbed trailer but one of the tires was not road-worthy so I slowly limped it to the nearest tire shop. The parking lot was full and there wasn't an empty seat in the waiting area. I walked up to the counter and said, "I brought you your favorite kind of business." The guy said, "Oh yeah, what's that?" With a big grin, I slapped the counter and said, "I need it right now!" He cracked up laughing and had me pull the trailer around to the back of the building. Twenty minutes later, I drove away with a used tire that actually matched the other tire. $27.
Having stress on road with repairs is hard, but how you work together to solve problems is a lesson to all watching. Your filming, editing and storytelling skills are priceless, thank you for sharing.
Thanks Hanks for sharing your real life story about your mishap and solutions. Wow I think $310 is an incredible blessing for these repairs and amount of time to get them completed. Stay safe stay awesome we love Thursdays with the Hanks
I agree 1,000%. I have NEVER taken my RV back to the dealership for anything. I either fixed it myself, or had a non-dealer professional help me (like for welding). Great advice!
The magnets are in parallel Typically, each axle has ONE set of wires between the frame and axle The catch, the wires split as they enter the axle and there is a wire that travels through the axle to the opposite side Since your wires between the frame and axle were torn, you lost AT LEAST that axle. If the wires to the other axle were intact, you had that axles' brakes. IF however, the junction at the frame above the forward axle was torn, you likely lost all braking (this would have caused your truck to alarm as this would have been a total open circuit)
I couldn't have said it better myself. Owning a auto repair company we repair lots of trailers as well. The price you paid was definitely fair. Good job!
Your videos are getting better for each one! Thank you. My comment is on torque wrench use. Tighten lug bolts in a “star pattern”. Never yank up on the wrench when checking torque. Use a steady down motion to evenly torque the bolts. The key is slow steady motion. Love you guys..even stinky butt :-)
I would like to mention that my brother (lives in Whitehorse ) recommended Integra Tire to us while we were up there this last summer. Also, Canadian Tire in Whitehorse has, I think, more RV parts than other CT stores further south. Why? Simply because the Alaska Highway is such a popular RV route.
Our local CT “down south”(😂) isn’t an um, trusted place to go for tire or mechanical issues. I’ve had good work at independent places and Fountain Tire. CT is amazing otherwise…I’ll take a CT gift card over a clothing store! I’m planning on buying rv needs there when we get our rig.
When my Chinese tire blew out and ripped the sheet of insulation fabric off the bottom of my tire well I cut off the dangling fabric and bought truck bed liner from Ace Hardware. Then I sprayed three coats of that on. Works like a charm!
Wow! Only 300$ to repair damages was great! Please be sure to keep an eye on front tire on the trailer because a friend of ours had a blowout on the freeway and just as they arrived home the other tire blew on the same side. He felt that the original blowout somehow damaged the remaining tire. Be careful out there!❤
That happened to me about eighty miles down the road. I had to safely get off the freeway in order to unhitch and get the rear tire off and go find a tire shop on a Sunday. Replaced both tires inorder to have a spare. What a pain.
As a rv owner since 2007 and service manager, I installed hvac tin in my wheel wells. Seen the the explosive enwrgy of blowouts on rvs...for the cost of deductibles its cheap preventive option. Don't mind spending a little more, ballistic kevelar will mitigate the damage lol..might have to patent idea
We just want to thank you for your video on the underbelly falling after a leak. It happened to us over Christmas. We found a leak and then later that night we heard a "boom". We went outside and saw the underbelly hanging to the ground. Our adult kids said, "Mom, you don't even looked surprised." I told them I wasn't cause I was prepared for this Thanks to the Hanks! Our son was able to screw it back up. We love you guys. My husband calls you our "RV kids!" Kim and Walter Eagleton.
Hi Kim and Walter! Oh my goodness, we are so sorry that you guys had to go through this...especially during Christmas! Glad you were able to get it addressed. That's RV life for you in a nut shell... things always happen when least expected. Much love to you all from the Hanks family ❤️
The best way to address the torn plastic covering from the blowout is to get it waterproofed the at Home Depot but a roll of 12 or 14 inch metal flashing, if the tire blows again it should eliminate anymore damage. This is what I have done and works like a dream
We have that same dump valve with the long handle on our Momentum. Luckily it’s forward enough of our axels to mot be affected by a blowout. Your advice about not taking your RV to a dealership is spot on!
Good job you guys!! As one who lived in Whitehorse all my adult life, I must add that this city definitely punches way above it’s weight in terms of supplies and services for a place north of 60. 😊
Love your video. You might want to check to verify the black plastic valve is food grade since you are using it on your fresh water tank. Black plastic is typically made of a different plastic that may not be food grade. Travel safely.
Most trailer brake wiring is like the welding guy said , The wiring comes down one side and branches off to the other side. So depending on what side was damaged tells if you lost one side or both. That must be how yours is because the crossover wire goes thru the axle tube.
When i had the blowout on my camper, I lost the trailer brakes totally. They were wired together, not sure if that is the same for all models. You are so right when you talked about using local businesses, they seem much more accommodating. Glad your safe and back on the road!!
Agreed, $300 US for that is a no brainer. Whitehorse is an amazing town as is Dawson City and the north has alot of services, just spaced out ( Nene called it Dawson Creek last week, that is actually at mile 0 on the alaska (alcan) highway) So happy you got to experience Canadian Tire. A very popular and well stocked store. If they dont have it, you dont need it. Thanks Hanks!
As many mentioned, only one pair of wires goes to each axle on the drivers side for cost. Some may have one for each axle, not sure. Mine shorted out in one of the brakes last trip taking out all the brakes. At a rest stop, i guessed and cut the rear axle wires. Good guess, that let the front axle work. Still need to do the permanent repair and am running 4 pairs of double insulated marine wire, one to each axle. I'm an IT guy so I like redundancy 😁.
Great video. We did 9000 miles in our Class B last summer, in 46 days pulling our Cherokee, cross country then up to Banff and across trans Canada Highway. We LOVE Canadian Tire! What a place! Got a battery for the jeep there. BTW I fix A LOT of the issues that come up. Nobody cares as much about your rig as you do.
What a different outcome than I expected; $310 is GREAT in my book! I need you guys to negotiate for me when we have road troubles! Stay safe and we look forward to catching up with you guys every Thursday!
I had same issue with the waterproof barrier in the wheel well being vaporized on a blow out. I found self adhesive aluminum flashing at a big box hardware store. That ended up working great plus it is thicker, tougher, etc than the waterproof factory fabric. Glad your creative repair sources worked out so well.
When I do repairs on my rv and even around the house. When I do repairs and it’s not a high dollar item I will try to buy 2. If it failed once it could happen twice. When something happens out in the bush you might not have the same part that failed but you might have something you can make do until you get to a service repair area. You all are the best. Good luck
You guys are the best. By that I mean you're so, so, so resourceful, 👋👍👍. You don't let a problem get in your way, you solve it 👏👍. Hey, I'm a older Canadian living in northern Alberta and Canadian Tire has been around serving Canadians for some time now. Canadian Tire first opened in Toronto, Ontario in February of 1922. This company has history with Canadian's for sure, eh! Glad that our fellow Canadian's helped you out, for sure, eh! 🤓
Showing up in person has always worked for me. People can see the desparation on your face, where if you are on the phone they cannot see it. If you think about it, calling someone on the phone is convenient for the caller but maybe not so much for the receiver of the call. You never know what state of mind the receiver is in. Maybe he or she is having an extreme crisis on their end but you're on the phone you don't know that. It's much easier for them to say at that time, "2 hours or next day or something else' so they can handle the situation on hand. I've used this concept throughout my career, sometimes walking a mile to the other side of my work building to speak to someone in person. If it looks like they are busy at the time, I may decide to come back after a few minutes or so.
Tire guy here😂 but if you get the trailer tires balanced it will cut down on the uneven wear while also taking away a lot of vibration wear on the bearings definitely something to try
A number of people pointed out that the brake wires from one side with wires running through the axle to the other side. The wires inside the axle are very prone to wear from rubbing and then shorting out the brake system. I had that problem so removed the wiring in the axle and moved the routing to the top of the axle. I put the wiring through a tough garden hose and securely attached it to the axle. The wiring hasn't moved in over a year of frequent use. I have the same TPMS and have set the low pressure alarm to the trailer tire recommended cold temperature. Even few pounds below the recommended cold temperature can result in too much heat build up in the tires. Having traveled to Alaska on the same highways it could be that the tire was damaged on one of the many chuck holes encountered. That is why it is a good idea to visually inspect the tires frequently. That is especially true for the other tire on the same side as the one that blew. They both went through the same chuck hole or possibly hit something on the road.
How lucky the blowout drained your fresh water when the brakes went. It lightened the load on your truck brakes a little. Thanks for documenting this experience. It gives me more confidence when I inevitably have a tire blow out.
Wow that was a good deal and you two got it going on for sure, always thinking. I agree with Renae...face to face is always better....hard to say no unless it is absolutely a no go. Unfortunately I have an Airstream and it would be a lot more probably to repair but I don't want to find out either.
00:01 So glad that didn't happen to us while we were in Alaska! Did get a flat before going to Glacier National Park though, so can relate. Stay safe! 👍
Eternabond is INCREDIBLE! I have it on all my seams. I also used it to maintain an inflatable mattress I used for a bit. Every single hole (which were frequent thanks to my pups), just slap a patch of Eternabond over it and it's fixed! No need to let it dry or anything.
You two are awesome! I'd expect nothing less from a couple of resourceful ER nurses. I'm glad you're back on the road and hope you get out of the upcoming winter weather up there.
Woohoo, all in one stop shopping. Glad it all worked out for a reasonable amount of money. Whew, now you can relax and enjoy your travels. Be safe. Hugs to Dexter.
Do you know what I love about you two? Your challenging issue videos aren't "bitchy". So many TH-camr's videos seem to want to make people not consider full-time RV living. Whereas yours makes me feel "If the Hanks can do it, I can do it." I have a Teardrop trailer now. I'm going to use it to travel around Peru, Chile, and Argentina. I'll send you some photos. Also, the family is growing. I just got married four weeks ago. Plus, not only do I have Logan my husky, Cosmo my golden retriever, Rockett my chihuahua, Shadow my abandoned black lab, but now I have Bucky, my new black and white kitten. He looks just like Logan but he's a cat. Big hugs from Peru! Uncle Mac, Yulian, Logan, Cosmo, Rockett, Shadow, and Bucky. (Yes, they all have Marvel character names.)
I can't believe how little yall paid for everything that you got done. That is amazing that yall got such a great deal on everything and that it just took one day . I'm glad yall are back on the road so be safe and looking forward to the next video.
Oh my, we were in Whitehorse in late September and used Integra tire !! They're the best!! Only place that still had fresh water and dump services in town passing through and then coming back.( was super cold and everyone else had shut down). Super thankful. You guys were lucky to at least not be to far away from a big enough center to find all the help you needed.
Glad you were able to get everything looked after. Most small repair shops, and tire shops in Canada are very accommodating and the price wasn’t too bad. Canadian Tire is our ‘go to’ store here in Canada. If your tire was wearing out, bushings could be the problem, but I’d be more concerned with having a bent axle, after some of the roads you were on. Safe travels on the rest of your journey. Rick
Just a tip - if you want to see if you have trailer brakes manually activate them at a slow speed. I usually do this after hooking up (tug test). Your brake controller should have some way to manually activate - factory ones it's usually just a slider, the more you squeeze the harder they apply.
Excellent tip! In fact, everyone should know how to activate their trailer brakes manually in an emergency, as it is one excellent way to recover from excess trailer sway on the highway.
Kyle & Ney....glad everything worked out for you guys. Breakdowns really stink, especially when you are far from home. Losing brakes on the rig is no joke; especially if you are pulling hills, mountains, going down steep grades, etc. We once lost our brakes on a travel trailer while descending Donner Pass in California and I must tell you that was one of the scariest times I have ever had when towing. This is when having the proper tow vehicle comes into play and thankfully, we did; however, I think the saving grace was the Akebono brake pads I had on the truck that potentially saved us from catastrophe. Might I suggest the next time you have your truck brake pads replaced to use Akebono brake pads. They cost a few dollars more than the OEM or premium discount auto parts store brands but they are worth every penny. That incident was about 12 years ago for us and I have used only Adebono brake pads on every vehicle we have owned since and current. Stay safe, happy travels and thank you for bringing us along with you on your journeys.
Way less expensive than I would’ve thought! For brake wiring, mine are wired in series. If the main wire breaks then I lose all four brakes. My friend rewired his brakes from in series to a dedicated wire to each wheel. Safe travels. 😊
You guys were lucky you had that little damage. Friends of our had a blow out on their travel trailer, that took out most everything under the kitchen. The insurance company totaled the camper! Love your videos.
You guys rocked that disaster! My DW freaks when stuff happens, I would love to recreate your trip! The wife watched your trip and said NO WAY! We had a spring collapse and ruin 2 tires last Sept 11th. Because its under warranty we have to run the gauntlet of OEM rules to get approvals. Dexter and Lippert via FR. Today is Nov 9th and it's still not ready. Non warranty would have been a couple of weeks at a dealer near Byron Ga. Luckily, we were on the last leg home of a 2 month trip. Otherwise it would have ruined the whole trip. If at home 2 days after sourcing parts max. If I say RV life on more time i may have to sleep in the truck. :-)
And remember Canadian Tire is much more than tires. That used to be their advertising slogan back in the day when they were evolving into a department store style business. 🇨🇦 🍁 Safe travels onward Hanks..
Certainly love the personal interaction in lieu of a phone call , how grand. Glad the journey was less stressful compared to what it could have been. Thanks for the video lessons. 😁
We Canadians aim to please.🇨🇦 Glad you were looked after. I found the same services available when we needed it on the Dempster where I was concerned bout breakdowns. I'm not crazy about Canadian Tire for service but they do have lots of inventory if you know what you want.
Great SUCCESS and PROUD of you BOTH! PLEASE PLEASE REMEMBER to have your Emergency Cones, Triangles, Flares OUT on the ROAD! Have REFLECTIVE VEST for BOTH of you too!!! Visibility is IMPORTANT to others to SEE YOU!!! XOXOXOXO
Glad you guys were able to get this fix that fast tire blow outs are stressful it happens keep a eye on the other tire on that side I replace my trailer tires every five years no matter how good are bad they look I learned over the years it’s cheaper to replace tires than to fix / repair the trailer you guys were lucky. Keep the vid coming look forward to Thursday to watch you guys. Give the cat a pat on the head for me.
I love it when i have the same issues as the Hanks at the same time..... I did'nt lose my brakes... just my fender skirt!! Gotta love a blowout.... new Sailun tires on the way!!!!
I love that you shopped in Canadian Tire!! It has been the go to store for many of us Canucks! Even as a little kid (I am 67) I remember shopping there with my Grampa who did all our home repairs. Got my first bike there a CCM special.

"Gizmo" is correct. Don't ask how i
Know
I would have never expected the cost would be only $310. I want to congratulate you two on having been your own advocate.
Thank you so much!
Your videos are getting better for each one! Thank you. My comment is on torque wrench use. Tighten lug bolts in a “star pattern”. Never yank up on the wrench when checking torque. Use a steady down motion to evenly torque the bolts. The key is slow steady motion.

..safe now! Valve replaced, moisture barrier (tape). So glad you were able get-r-done.
We love our Canadian Tire stores for pretty much everything you need or want. The sales are incredible too. Glad you discovered it.
I'm glad you guys are safe. Having a blow out and no brakes isn't fun.
Thank you for your kindness
Carl, it might be a regional thing, but I’ve always heard “solder” with the “L” silent. “ Sadder” Hugs to NayNay and Dexter too! Great episode. 👍👍

He sure did!
We just want to thank you for your video on the underbelly falling after a leak. It happened to us over Christmas. We found a leak and then later that night we heard a "boom".
So glad you are all buttoned up & safe again! You did a great job navigating the crises. Thanks!
Thank you so much!
Super good news considering what it was looking on the side of the road!! Stay safe and drive safely!! !!
Whereas yours makes me feel "If the Hanks can do it, I can do it."
I have a Teardrop trailer now.
P.S. I'm so thankful you three are safe!
Thank you so much and congratulations!
Dexter is a cool cat!! He should get his own UT channel!!
I’m glad y’all are okay, and it wasn’t that expensive of a fix.
I've been with you guys since prior to 20k subscribers. You're now about to surpass Today is Someday. Great job, guys!!
I can't believe how little yall paid for everything that you got done. That is amazing that yall got such a great deal on everything and that it just took one day . I'm glad yall are back on the road so be safe and looking forward to the next video.
Glad you all are safe
You two have great attitudes. You are very fun.
Thank you so much!
Looks good guys glad it all worked out!
Rick
Well done Hanks!
You're going to love those little roof and pillows those things are amazing
That’s so scary!
Way less expensive than I would’ve thought!
For brake wiring, mine are wired in series. If the main wire breaks then I lose all four brakes.
My friend rewired his brakes from in series to a dedicated wire to each wheel.
Safe travels. 😊
Welcome to Canada and good on you for finding the much underrated Canadian Tire, it is an awesome store and can really get you out of a bind.
You guys were lucky you had that little damage. Friends of our had a blow out on their travel trailer, that took out most everything under the kitchen. The insurance company totaled the camper!
Love your videos.
😮
Wife and I love your videos. So glad you were able to get it all done for a little over $300 and in one day. Great job using your noodles!
You guys really are smart, that was the best way to handle the situation I'm really proud of how you handled it. FANTASTIC 👍😊👍😊👍🌈🌈🌈🐈🐈
Thanks so much
You go Hanks!! Love watching you take care of business!!
Nice to hear something good about service places. Great. I
You guys rocked that disaster!
Good job Hanks...
Howdy Hanks, it's great to see you today.
Hope all is well with you .
I really enjoy your videos. 😊
Thank you so much!
Wow that’s amazing! So glad y’all could get it mostly fixed at a minimal cost! Happy Camping and Safe Travels! ❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻
XOXOXOXO
Kudos to both of you. Never easy when on the road but a can do attitude works !
Glad you were able to get it fixed quickly. Canadian Tire has a bit of everything and often has great sales.
Wow! You definitely got out of that cheap. Well done! 🙂🙂🙂
You are bang on about Canadian Tire. Go Canada! Love your videos!
Thank you so much!
Great recovery guys, very resourceful.
Canuck Pnue (CTC) for the win. You can normally find something you need for a repair like that. Good luck the rest of the way.
Canadian tire is my first go to for almost anything that needs fixed
