I'm a licensed tech of 2 years now thanks to "The Nail Hub" tutorials on TH-cam (all gel services). 15 years prior, I used acrylic on myself but stopped due to ventilation issues. Had the industry not advanced, I would still be stuck with minimal art and natural nail services only. Had it not been for TH-cam (folks like you two), I would have never considered getting licensed because of the stigma Tracy described. Even in 2021, I got "looks" from family about doing nails. It's a weekend thing (Front-End Developer Mon-Fri) at a salon (commission) but I love it. In addition to the computer science education I have, I am also an art major (2 degrees). I cannot tell you how much I have to correct people who think art cannot help you as an adult in a career and how anyone can be "right brain" and "left brain" because we have both. 😏 It's old and untrue terminology that's holds everyone back at some level. Also - I understand that nail products need to be treated with respect (proper use & sanitation education) but the way this information and pro products are kept from the public is the reason all the more dangerous nail products end up in the Amazon carts of unsuspecting and uneducated public to later develope an allergy to....

Did you try polygel or hybrid nails? I really like them. No odor. I love them. I have lung problems acrylic bothers me.

    • @laranadesign4764
      @laranadesign4764 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jennifer4196 I have, but I'm faster at building a nail with gel, so I prefer it for most of what I do. Poly/hybrid is great for repairs when you need to replace a corner or sidewall because gels "round off" too much and a form is best placed with the free-edge removed, so it fits neatly into my repair service.

When I attended nail school I went at night and held a full time job during the day. When my workday ended, I would change into the scrubs we were required to wear in class and then leave the building. My boss at the time knew I was in nail school, saw me in my scrubs and said to me, “you have to wear all of that to learn to paint nails?” I bid her a good day and went on my way.

I'm a nail tech in Europe and it drives me nuts to see ppl commenting "I pay €20 for this back home" ok? and??? different economy + your nail tech back home 100% undercharges too! damn, everyone forgets that inflation hits us too and that nails aren't a necessity but a LUXURY. A luxury that requires much skills and investing in training on our part. I can't wait to raise my prices and see other nail techs here do the same. I wanna see nail techs charge their worth and feel good and NOT guilty about it. I want clients and other beauty professionals to respect us. It's the bare minimum and baffles me how people are already actively fighting on it.

I was over at a “friend’s” house for dinner last week. I mentioned that I was wrapping up my last month of school and what all I was studying. She made a comment like, “it’s just nails. It’s not like it’s an actual art. Nobody wants to pay for that Instagram bs. I hate it when nail techs call themselves artist. It’s so dumb.” I was speechless.

It’s also this thing where ppl will willingly go to a hairstylist that is not licensed but has skill and will pay $300-$500 for a service with no complaints, getting it done in an unprofessional setting.. it’s like ohh she does hair, I’m there! Oh she does nails, she charges how much? Oh no nails are nothing they don’t deserve that amount for some nails 🙄

    • @LP-ct9nk
      @LP-ct9nk 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

It’s because people/society put more emphasis on having your hair done/looking good vs. nails. Also with hair the results whether cut or color are semi-permanent until it grows out, so people are more willing to pay to avoid mistakes. With nails if you don’t like a set you could remove it/get it fixed rather easily.
Not saying the mindset is right but that’s what I see from laypeople with services

I had a similar conversation recently. I come from an education background and people were always very impressed when I told them I was a math tutor, but now I'm sort of reluctant to tell people I'm a nail tech because you can see them trying to school their facial expression. They kind of just go "oh! Ok..." and it's like they immediately assume I'm unintelligent or I'm in a career that is subpar. When the reverse is true. I'm far more successful now, plus I'm passing skills on to others.

I've been learning nails for 4-ish years now via the greats of TH-cam University and I still drop my jaw at how y'all can do a full set so quickly. Thinking about a salon environment and how quickly and precisely ppl are just blows my mind. Ppl deserve to be paid fairly!

    I love this!
    Particularly the Restaurant reference.
I'm a licensed/qualified tech in Australia. (We do need qualifications to charge for our services or work in the industry, but probably not as regulated as it is in U.S) What I find is that when I'm educating or making suggestions to my clients, they nearly always say, "You're the professional, whatever you think is best" .
It's great to be acknowledged as a professional and that's why there's always going to be work for me in my business setting.
I agree that anyone who loves nails should be able to have a go.
Art enthusiasts, garden enthusiasts, jewellery enthusiasts etc all get access to what they need, to have a red hot go at something they want to try.
Thoroughly enjoyed this Biz Talk ❤

Love this chat! A couple of months ago a company I really like announced they were finally opening up their products to nail enthusiast (mind you, just a couple of things) and all professional nail techs freaked out! I am a nail enthusiast who is going to nail school to get licensed, and couldn’t have done without access to professional products such as YoungNails. It’s a pity that they see everyone as competition, instead of being happy that more people are interested in their craft. I just started following a bunch of nail techs in the area to see what they do and what is offered/wanted in the area. But the main reason is to support them!

I've been an enthusiast for years, decided to quit my job and become a qualified nail tech. You're right, we don't have licensing like the States. Loved this talk! It baffles me that nail techs can be looked down on because they "just do nails" but I've always preferred going to a tech that ONLY does nails. They seem more dedicated to their trade that way. She can do acrylic, gel, nail art, offers new products and knows what's popular styles at that time. The ones doing hair, facials, waxing, makeup, and then nails usually only offer one thing because they can't keep up with the ever changing beauty industry offering ALL those services. And they are impossible to get an appt with. Oh and there are 2 nail schools where I live offering 3 month programs and it's still hard to find a tech taking new clients, so I don't think the DIYers have hurt the industry at all 😁thank u for your content! I love educational videos like this!

This is why I believe in a split of licenses. Every beauty pro should stay in their professional lane. Cosmetology school does not prepare anyone to be a professional esthetician or nail technician. I'm an esthetician and go hard for respecting the qualifications of nail techs.
Be specific when you speak of Europe. It's a continent not a country. My original post graduate educators were from England. They have MUCH higher cosmetologist qualifications than the USA (regardless of the state you got your license). We trying to have it both ways. Many in the USA we want high professional wages with little to no education or professional licensure. Hair, skin & nails are professions not a side hustles. If you top pay, be a real professional. If you are a professional, charge what you deserve. TH-cam University is giving some people a false sense of knowledge and professional qualifications.

I am a nail tech and have an opposite opinion actually. I started off DIY and then went to school for my license. I think there should be a limited amount/type of product available to non-pros. 1. there is a growing number of people with permanent allergies because they use professional gel-x products on themselves at home because “it’s so easy you don’t even need a nail tech” which is harming the health of people and also making it seem like nail pros are worthless. 2. the hair industry doesn’t let everyone get the nice products and that’s good for them. hair stylists can charge what they want for their formulas on clients because clients can’t achieve that at home in a box. and if you try to get stuff like redken shades online it’s often expired/old you just can’t get those products. if selling to everyone didn’t affect the health of people then fine but everyone is underestimating that these are professional products to be used by professionals. and if that was clearer I think nail techs would be valued more. I think we need stricter regulations for what can be sold to consumers because most companies now will sell to anyone regardless of if it’s good for them or not.

    No respect for Nail Techs!!
That was something, they forgot to tell me, before I went to school for it. I loved nails, like we all do before we go to school, I had already been wearing nails for years, and had the most respect for my tech. Wasn't till I was working in my 1st salon, that I realized no one respected the nail tech. Okay, no one isn't fair, the estheticians were okay, but the Hair Dressers... Omg!!
You know because they did, what, a day, a week, of nails training - they knew we were the idiots of the beauty world. We weren't smart enough to be stylists, so we became nail techs. Estheticians were higher ranked, because they could do more than just nails. They gave facials, and did electrolysis....
I did had the thought, that maybe I was just at a bad salon, but sadly, no...
Very rarely did I meet a stylist who had any respect for a nail tech, and when I did, it was because their sister was one or in my case, my aunt was one...
Do you know how many times I've been told, that I basically went to clown college??
Having some techs or salons do manicures for $15. Is not helping things either, now they think we are cheap and our work is worthless. They already thought we were stupid, and us charging $15. kinda proves it...
If we don't value our own work, and ourselves, it's hard to blame others for not doing so.
Undercutting the competition also under cuts the industry, as a whole.
There has to be a level, we don't go below... A standard !!
I'm happy to see prices are going up and nail techs are getting more recognition, then when I started 20, years ago. And thank you to the celebrity's, who are willing to pay some bucks for the bling, it's helping, but it should be starting and moving up because of us.!!
We need to demand the respect and put a price tag on it. Charging peanuts for our hard work, time and skills says were worthless. It's the message your sending, and because we are all grouped together, those peanuts speak for us all...
So, everyone Please - charge according to your skill level and for the art. Press On Nails count too!! If the set took 3 hours, then charge for it! Not $15 or $20 because their Press Ons.
    And, I'll stop ranting...
But, if you understand what I was saying, then you understand, I was ranting for us all... lol

I think part of the problem with Pro verses DIY, is Pro went to school, Pro took the time, paid the money, worked hard, trained and practiced enough, so she could pass the exams, in order to be approved by the government, in order to work in her industry.
The DIY didn't do that, and is functioning in that same industry. A lot of them, also want the same amount of respect, just cause they like nails too.
It is disrespectful to the Pro, who took things seriously, who worked seriously hard to achieve, and is still working hard because she's gotta keep upgrading, and learning, with the changing industry.
DIY said I think I'm gonna do this today/ this week, and I'll maybe watch some videos, or watch the trained tech do it, and ask some questions and then I'll give it a try. They are taking clients, and they are out there teaching. Posting videos on, how too, telling others, of I can do it - so can you...
    So more are....
It's the blind leading the blind.
When you dont know your dangerous, when you know a little bit, your extremely dangerous, because you have the confidence and mind set, that you do know. So you do not, see the harm it what your doing, what damages you can cause. Permanent ones, that last a lifetime and have serious consequences, and its the Pro tech, and the industry who take the blame for it.
How many have heard someone say "Artificial Nails, ruined my nails"
Or it was "Acrylic ruined my nails"
    Why do they believe this?
Say this in front of Greg - watch him get pissed...
    What is Greg's reply?
No, sweetie, it wasn't the enhancements or the Acrylic that did it, it was the moron doing your nails...
So, you wonder why Professional Nail companies, do want their products in the hands of morons...??
DIYers also have the complaint that the beauty supply companies won't train them...
Now, a lot of beauty supply companies, cannot legally train you. They can offer advance education, to already licensed nail tech, but not to DIYers, because the government said so.
Government wants you to have your base education 1st (the license).
So you cannot put the blame of the beauty supply companies, they are not stopping you from getting an education or being snobbish - they are following the rules.
Using the excuse I cannot afford to go to school, is not acceptable. It's sad, and heart breaking, but not a valid excuse.
Going to Harvard Medical School is expensive and only a small few can actually do it, but just because you can't afford it, doesn't mean you can practice medicine anyways... After a few TH-cam videos that is...
School is very expensive, too expensive and I've never agreed with it. It should be free, to anyone who wants to learn, only makes us stronger as a nation.
But that is another fight, in another channel.
For here and today, the rules say, you need a license, so you need a license.

Not only is it extremely difficult to get good at nails, art, customer service, BUT the cost to get started in the nail industry is expensive. Where I live a full set is 45$ to 60$ for a set.... It's extremely hard to do this job when all your money goes to GOOD product.. I wish I could charge more, but no one would pay more then 60$ and that's if your in the top nail artists. But yeah I've asked people if they have to go without lashes or nails, they all say they would skip the nails. Sad

The problem is, every 16 year old child is now doing nails without a license and charging $20 for a set, which is totally illegal, so because of that, the Professionals who have gone to school, paid their dues, continuing education, license fees etc...
are not looked up to as Professionals since teenagers are doing nails without the license and for much cheaper!

@@liannes_life3007 these are not my clients. These are teenagers advertising on marketplace that they do nails for $20 with no license, no schooling, and do it at their house.

In Australia there is no regulation BUT there needs to be. Here we refer to them as Non Standard Salons and I'm sorry but there is a huge difference between Certified and Qualified. I did my own nails for 5 years before doing my "Nail School" Cert III and I learnt so much more than just nails. Legal & ethical etc. Here we have salons in malls where 5 people do the nails the smell is disgusting and it's left to the Certified Techs to clean up the mess. I totally back the companies that ask for that piece of paper because I wouldn't want my product advertised by an unproffesional that makes it look bad. So as much as I love you guys we'll have to agree to disagree ;)

As a hobbyist in Germany: the companies that don't want to deal with DIYers just brand themselves as wholesale only so DIYers can't purchase there

Lol I won’t pay that for lashes but I would for nails, I won’t pay that for a hair cut but I would for nails. But I’m a nail tech that loves nails, I love makeup and hair too but passion is skin and makeup. I don’t love hair cutting or coloring , I’m more of a hair bender soul. Only licensed in nails and certified in massage.

The US is the only country that requires a nail tech to have a license. In addition, every state has different requirements for licensure, so there isn't a way to fully regulate who purchases any product based on simply having a license. The professional nail technician always has and always will be a priority to us, but we were all unlicensed nail enthusiasts at one time.

Parts of Canada requires a License too. Nova Scotia requires one, and Alberta does not. Its a province by province thing here.
Try moving from one province to another... and continue to work in your field.... Nothing but a damm headache!!

@@youngnailsinc You say each state has different requirements to get licensed .
I do not understand your reply to him. How can't it be regulated? What does it matter, what the state requires, your not the one handing out the state licenses, all it would matter is if the person got theirs, in their state....
Who cares what Susie had to do in Miami, as long as she did it. She shows paper saying she did it, thats all that matters. So what that Becky had to do different things in L.A, as long as Becky did them...
So I do not understand the answer you gave, why can't you keep track?
I am not agreeing or disagreeing, either way, I don't understand the reply.
Would be totally easy to say, must have paper to buy if you live in this Country.
If you live in this Country, no papers required.
