    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
As the world disappears, Joel (Jim Carrey) relives the moment when he first asked out Clem (Kate Winslet), and she challenges him to "Remember me."
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
The second feature from director Michel Gondry (Human Nature) finds the filmmaker reteaming with screenwriter Charlie Kaufman for this off-the-wall romantic comedy. Jim Carrey stars as Joel Barish, a man who is informed that his ex-girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has had her memories of their relationship erased from her brain via an experimental procedure performed by Dr. Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson). Not to be outdone, Joel decides to have the same procedure done to himself. As Mierzwiak's bumbling underlings Stan (Mark Ruffalo) and Patrick (Elijah Wood) perform the operation on Joel -- over the course of an evening, in his apartment -- Joel struggles in his own mind to save the memories of Clementine from being deleted. Kirsten Dunst, David Cross, and Jane Adams also star.

I love this movie to death. I know for a FACT that this particular scene resonates with almost anyone who has seen it. It's such a universal feeling to want to restart. This scene is my all time favourite scene in any film. It just nails it on the head and sums up the central theme of the movie. I just really appreciate the romanticism.

    • @CaitMcKi
      @CaitMcKi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

It's so true. And I think in addition to wishing for a restart, the concept of wanting to keep those memories is also so relatable. It's such a conflicting state to be in after a breakup - on the one hand, you want to try to forget, and move on. On the other, you're one of the only two people who experienced that world you two built together; once you've both released the memories, it disappears into oblivion (and who's to say the one other person who was there, hasn't already done so?)

I actually came here looking for this scene. I remember vividly getting a cold chill, even a little sick to my stomach, seeing all the books get blanked out. That's a life, or even a relationship: not a single book, but books upon books upon books. Seeing them lose their contents is like death worse than death.

For some reason the part that always sticks to me is she doesn't kiss him when she vanishes. She just boops his nose. That gesture is probably the most intimate thing I've seen in fiction.

Erik Ahl I thought it was because the eraser guys are slowly erasing the details of the memory he's in, little by little that's why in the beginning you can see the titles clearly. Every memory starts deteriorating little by little this the small details do. More and more books start going blank if you look closely
He's reliving each memory until it's completely erased. It's funny because his relationship has gone form good to bad but through the process of him having clementine erased from his memory he has to relive each memory in the reverse order; bad to good which at first he's content with having the procedure when he's experiencing the worst of it again but as he starts going back to the start he starts remembering the value of the relationship and why he fell in love with her, first hand living those special moments..he changes his mind.

This movie is even more heartbreaking now. It reminds me of me and my ex except i'm pretty much exactly like Joel and he is a lot like Clemetine in many ways. We often drove each other insane but I think we care about each other a lot... He can be quite spontaneous. A while ago he cut ties with me for good this time and just moved away. It pissed me off because I was sick of how crazy he can be but now I miss him more than ever. There was this beach we used to go to, like Montauk for Joel and Clementine. I adore this film and everything about this scene is heartbreaking. They both accept at this point what’s happening, the memories are being erased and they can’t hide anymore. So they’re enjoying reliving them, together. I’m sure we all wish we could relive some of those moments like a spectator. “I still thought you were gunna save my life, even after that.” Hits home. We all have painful memories of those we loved, wondering why things went as they did, how we wished sometimes to rid ourselves of them to be spared the pain. But they make us who we are, they shared so much good and bad that we’d lose a piece of ourselves to forget them.

This scene is just so heartbreaking because he realizes here finally that he won't be able to save his memory of Clem much longer (this is the 2nd he ever saw her and the memories are going in reverse). He is talking to his own memory of Clem (all the memories he ever had of her embodied in a single being) who actually turns out (thank god!) to be exactly like the real Clem and gives him that invaluable advice "Meet me in Montauk" only for him to go there the next day and actually meet her!!

One of my favorite movies of all time. As well as my favorite scene of all time. The thing I love about this movie is it’s not meant to be a romance, I mean obviously there’s romantic things in it but overall it’s a drama. The movie is about Joel, learning to accept that it’s better to have loved and lost then never to have loved at all. Clementine was toxic but she made him feel alive, she filled a void in his life that he had, working day by day doing the same thing over and over. Then comes along the manic pixie dream girl who us guys fantasize about at least one time in our life, the one who will change our life, but we put so much pressure on them and it’s unfair, and put them on this pedestal that when we lose it it’s absolutely devastating and tragic and ruins us. Another beautiful scene when in the end when they are in the hallway he just says “okay” to knowing that no matter what it’s gonna fail but it’s worth it just to have as a memory. Truly such a beautiful movie.

This movie has such an important lesson for men.
Listen to what clementine is saying.
It’s okay to ask for help sometimes but stop expecting women/a relationship to save your life, that’s not a partnership.
    that’s a therapist.
If you wanna care for people in a genuine way get help or practice healthy habits outside of your interpersonal relationships.
That is the key to sustaining a healthy relationship where people don’t want to erase you from their memories LOL

I don’t know if this will make any sense, but perhaps fellow “creatives” can relate.
When I first saw this movie in the theater, the moment that stuff started disappearing, and especially this scene with the books starting to disappear, this movie went from a cool love story to an amazingly beautiful piece of art.
As a hopeless creative, I was actually jealous of this movie because it is just so unique and amazing from an artistic perspective.
As a songwriter, I wanted to try and write a song as beautiful as this movie. I even got a piece of a pretty good song trying.
(Btw feel free to listen to my songs on my channel 😉)
I kind of see scenes in a movie as kind of like songs on an album. So watching favorite scenes from movies is kind of like listening to favorite songs on an album. This is definitely one of my favorite scenes. It’s a little bit of “dazzle” in a beautifully quirky love story.
Anyway, I just love this movie and it makes me happy to watch clips every now and then.

BillyCrombie "maybe I'm missing some but how does Joel 'remember that speech really well' didnt she only give it at the end of the film, and the narratively and chronologically?"
They erase Joel's memories in (mostly) reverse chronological order. So you see this scene toward the end of the movie, but it's one of the earliest memories he has of her.
