- This is a walk through my journey to upgrade my 2002 gem car motor, wheels, speed controller and batteries, not to mention all of the new paint the stereo and steering wheel and pine tree air freshner.

can you please tell me exactly what moter and speed controler i need to buy i will like to upgrade mine
would have been good to see motor and then speed controller... then wheels, then batteries. Motor seemed to pull accelerate fine with those wheels.
Did you get a brand new speed controller or just reprogrammed it? I want mine to go faster ha.
Just re-programmed. when I purchased the motor they re-programmed my speed control for free.
Where do you go to get fenders painted? Just got a a gem needs to update .
I got my fenders painted at a bumper shop. They do flexible, plastics, kind of like automobile bumpers and so that’s where I went.

Question. Code 06. And suggestions I saw it’s a Excelerator pedal.
Codes 11&06 are both accelerator pedal issues. Usually 11 just indicates that your foot may be on the accelerator pedal when you start the car. 06 is usually a deeper problem. have you tried cleaning the rheostat pot or disassembling the accelerator pedal to clean it?

The batteries need to be group 31 size so that they fit in the car. And you want a deep cycle battery because you want long duration power not cranking power (CCA)

I did not lift the car, but I did lift the rear spat about 2 inches. The wheels are SS brand and they are called "Storm Trooper", they are available at any respectable golf cart shop.
Good lord, someone needs to give this man a speeding ticket!!! I saw 10 MPH speed limit on the ground and he is going 37 MPH. That's it, I'm calling the airport police so they can ticket you and impound your speedster cart!
I know there are many factors but how many miles can go an a single charge?
There are a LOT of variables, This particular car has Group 31 lead acid batteries & its fast so its range is only about 20 miles per charge. But you look really cool driving it.
Have you heard of the magic magnet for the gem car and what is you're take on it?
I use it on some of my cars. I have installed one on all of my cars & if it works I keep it installed & if it doesn’t I remove it. It’s super simple to install. it does increase the speed 3 to 5 mph but
On some of my cars it didn’t do anything. It basically interrupts the signal back to the controller that the motor is going faster than 25 mph So the controller doesn’t reduce the speed of the motor.
I test drove a 2-seater of similar vintage several years back. I shouted out loud when I saw the new wheels. Looking at these videos, I wish I'd bought it. I can't find a vintage GEM car for less than some of the Nissan Leafs I'm seeing for sale! Aren't you worried about it not being street legal after modification, though?
I admit I am concerned about that. but I’m confident that The police will be more annoyed at me doing 25 mph in a 35 zone then they would be with me keeping up with traffic at 35. But you are correct modifying the gem car technically does remove it from its classification as a low speed vehicle.
@@wcolby - The other night at work a guy exploded on me (perhaps in fun, but I couldn't tell) when he found out that I drive my GEM 25 in a 35. I told him he should save his anger for situations that he actually knows about -- and that he's never actually SEEN me drive the gem.
He brought up the law about "impeding traffic" - as if someone who drives a GEM car wouldn't know that you're not allowed to impede traffic. There's no law that says you can't go 25 in a 35. The law says that you're not allowed to go FASTER than the Speed Limit (even to pass!). You just have to be careful not to impede traffic.
As it is, I often have to SLOW DOWN in my GEM for other vehicles on the road.
Do you know anybody who ever got a ticket for impeding traffic? What was the situation?
@@MrTwostring I live in California. You have to do something fairly egregious to get yourself a ticket out here.
@@wcolby So... are you saying you're NOT concerned about getting a ticket for going 25 in a 35? In the meanwhile, I've been reading up on case law and statutes for "impeding traffic" and it's pretty clear that this doesn't mean a person is "impeded" if he has to wait for a passing zone or for a safe place for you to pull over and let him pass.
@@MrTwostring I am not concerned about getting a ticket because the police have so much other stuff to do. when it comes to impeding traffic… even today I took an unnecessary left-hand turn because I couldn’t get past an 18 wheeler and I didn’t want traffic behind me.

@@wcolby No , this is the first of your posts. That I have watched. I have a 2002 that I purchased new. I have just about all of the mods you can make. I live in Navarre Beach Florida. My GEM is my primary car. It drives fine at 45mph. Has tags and insurance. It is all I need to get around, most of the time. I do have a truck to go to Lowes, Home Depot, or pull my boat. I have always enjoyed my little GEM!! I am impressed by your work...
