Schizophrenia is a serious psychiatric illness. Along with patient family also suffers.
AGE
Starts by 25 years and persists in most of cases for life long.
It's present in 1% of population , equally in male and females.
More common with other family members suffering from it .
DIAGNOSIS
No lab test is required for making diagnosis.
Its diagnosis is entirely based on symptoms given below and these should be present for more than one to six months depending on the criterias.
SYMPTOMS
Characterized by suspiciousness ,false beliefs, hearing of voices ,odd behaviour , it requires long term treatment and family support
SUSPICIOUSNESS
Suspiciousness on his or her own family members colleagues or friends.
DELUSIONS (False thinking )
Patient has odd thinking, illogical and despite family repeated reassurance person is not convinced he or she holds belief firm despite evidence not .Supporting their theory. There way of thinking is completely illogical and irrational family is really disturbed and frustrated.
Delusion of reference
Patient has odd beliefs like people are talking about me, laughing on me, coughing of sneezing on seeing me.
Delusion of persecution
Patient has odd beliefs like people are conspiring about me goes on to say that people are keeping watch on me,at times they believe theyare under cctv surveillance. At times my patients have complained that while they take bath someone might make recording of it , while on road they turn back and check if some is behind them or even family has conspired and police is after them to arrest or harass them. Someone is mixing something in the food he or she may refuse to eat at home or make own food.
Delusion of Grandeur
Patient believes that they have special power , knowledge, money or even claim to be God at times.
HALLUCINATIONS
Another common complaint is person talks to herself or himself to family. It seems as if talking to someone to some imaginary person which they cannot see at time patient is smart enough to keep hand over his or her face or do it when alone if caught by his or family members person.
ODD BEHAVIOUR
Aggressive, abusive , violent ,reserved or guarded.
Laughing to self, without reason , talking to self , making silly faces
not speaking at all , standing in one position for long periods, staring at one spot
SUICIDE
50% to 30% attempt and 10%-15% die
CAUSES
There is no clear cut causes as yet there are multiple theory
Dopamine is neurochemical is increased in mind of patients
Excessive pruning of synapses
TREATMENT
Medication is the main treatment.
Psychotherapy also helps to patient, to family to understand about illness and how to behave with patient
Patient improve within 4-6 weeks though they have to take medication for at least one year for first episode
If repeated episodes than treatment is lifelong.

Thanks for explaining schizophrenia in simple words. I had first physotic attack in 2011 and than 2012. I experienced most of these symptoms. But thanks to modern medicine.I am stable and able to do my job and day to day activity since 2012. I am doing good at my work without any difficulties.

Was suffering from schizophrenia and got treatment for 6 months now healthy since 1 year.
I just have one large doubt which I was unable to get cleared.
I used to smoke weed which was legal in USA from there I started then I came to India.
Then my mother saw some symptoms of schizophrenia(no one knew that i had it until the end when we went to psychiatrist). I stopped that as my mother also knew that I used to smoke and then I didn't smoked but the conditions became worse and everyone keeps shouting on me that you are still smoking but I never did after my mom told me not to.
My friends still smoke and I don't want anyone to suffer like I did. So could you please let me know is there any chance it is caused or initiated by weed. And can it re-occur under any conditions?

My mother's a schizophrenic. We didn't know that for 25 years. I need some suggestions. My mom had constant fear of terrorists who'd kill her and our family because of her. She was a teacher and was always fearful of people plotting against her. My Elder brother and Father used to beat her up for almost a decade or around it. I remember that me and my twin used to run away with our mom at midnight outside our home saving our life because we feared our father would kill our mom and we'd stray all the night on the roads till morning when my father would be asleep and back to normal from his alcohol levels . She would get ready and leave for her school to teach. She kept earning for us children to feed us never mentioning her conditions. We always believed it was God with us. And then we grew and became mature but our mom started fearing even more. Fast forward - Dec 2017- She was 66 years old and started talking to random imaginary people which we never saw her do all these years and it was scary. A week later she jumped up the 10 foot wall (she's only 5 foot 2 inches tall) and ran away running on the streets shouting terrorists have come for her and she wasn't even recognising me , we literally had to wait 16 days for her appointment to the doctor who treated her way back in 1999 and told my father it was depression (which was true and very vague as an explanation). This January 1st , 2018 I made notes of her behaviour all these years including her suicidal tendencies (poison drinking and then drinking fuel to kill herself) and talking to angels and God ,etc. We got her on this drug Risperidone by discontinuing Alprazolam (which she was immune to and it didn't work for her rather increasing her symptoms) . Risperidone worked awesomely after a period of a week and she has improved since January but recently now in May 2018 ,she's again started to have fears of neighbours plotting against killing our family and people listening to her (which she always had in all these 25 years) but she doesn't talk to random voices or have hallucinations like she did in December. My questions are :1)is she getting immune to Risperidone ? 2) Is her condition reverting to her maniac phase? 3) I stay in India and doctors here only experiment on patients here and even the best doctor in my city doesn't discuss much about her details with me what options do I have ? 4) are there questions you could suggest that I should ask to her doctor when I visit him next month on her routine checkup? 5) Is there anything that I could care for as she doesn't speak much after the medications and she's not expressive I fear she's hiding something. My mom is the world to me and I am not getting married so that I don't have to divide my time on a wife and a baby so to say. I want to do everything for my mom that I Can ,I just want her to have her old age years happy because she had enough of violence and social boycott and seeing her sleep beside me in that comfort and deep sleep is the most beautiful time of the day for me. My mother sleeping without fearing for her life ,without her loved ones abandoning her when she needs help is beyond expressions. I can't even imagine what my life would have been had my mother not worked and raised us up despite her illness and took horrifying beatings , burning, slitting, bone breaking ,thrashing my Dad gave her then and my mom would simply earn for us to feed us ,to raise us and wake up again and be beaten and treated like a housemaid. I want to be the best son and I feel sad that we ignored her conditions but on that would be the fault of her doctor who never told us that she suffered from schizophrenia and not depression. Thanks for reading what my heart felt. I pray for everyone who is suffering from this to get well soon and be brave ,you guys are heroes in real life. Prayers ! i am facing thought broadcasting from october last year and it is so surreal people dont agree with me but they do give me hints that it is true
Rajeev sir i hv syzophrania symptoms since 10 years. Much of my time was wasted in identifying this problem due to doctors not providing me sufficient counselling. At fist I did not consider that it was a problem. Mai sochta tha muje shak karne ki aadat ho gayi hai. It started during the end of my mba days when mere sath kuch ragging type ka incident hoa aur dusri taraf i began to like a girl with whom I did not speak for once during mba days. I proposed her after my colg days but she neglected me without giving any proper reason. But one thing worth mentioning is that when I was treated badly at college a part of group supported me and this girl whom I liked was a part of that. Now it has been 10 years and mera symptoms bar bar repeat hota hai. Isliye mai job mein bhi settle nehi ho paya hu. Par abhi jab mai apse bat kar raha hu it is under control. My psychatrist says it can be controlled but not cured. Wahi dusri taraf mere medications ki side effect bhi muje bahut disturb karti hai.On going through internet I hv found a life coach kailash mantry who claims he can cure this problem without medicine. I want to try him but the treatment is so costly that I cannot go for it. He also does not help me when I wrote him my problem.
