Genetically, we are Asians. Culturally, we are Pacific Islanders. Us being called Asians is fairly recent and I don't know if this is true but a few south-east Asian nations will be identified as Pacific islanders in 2020
Rek, what makes the philippines explicitly Pacific Islander when it comes to culture? Please tell me because I've been Filipino for years and I've never once felt like my culture is in any way identical to people in Hawaii, Polynesia, Guam, etc. If anything, Filipino culture is more related to Malaysians and Indonesia than anything. The only difference is our foreign influences were Spanish and American as opposed to British and Arab.
Guys im Filipino and no one in the Philippines call themselves pacific islanders. The country is part of the ASEAN a group of countries in SOUTH EAST ASIA. To become a pacific islander you must be living on an island that is in the inner pacific circle like micronesia, guam, saipan, etc The philippines is not just a “pacific island” its an archipelago.
I think it's because Polynesians come from Austronesian also known as aboriginals they inhabited islands Such as Taiwan and the Philippines and the lands now called Vietnam and China
@Koko martin first of all it's called Micronesia not papaun and secondly that's only part of the reason technically fillipinos and Japanese are Pacific Islanders same as the native Americans who live on islands on the west coast of the US.now speaking purely from a technical standpoint the fillipinos technically aren't even Asian Because they don't live on the continent of Asia ,but obviously they are descended from Asians as are the Polynesians and the native Americans and the so although fillipinos and Indonesians are classified as south east Asians they technically aren't even Asian and the true south east Asians are the Chinese, Thais and Vietnamese ,you got to look at it from a purely technical standpoint
I’m Filipino, and I’ve never ONCE thought about myself or the Philippines as a whole as Pacific Islander. We are SOUTHEAST Asians!!! I’ve seen Pacific Islander cultures, and never once have I felt remotely connected to them. If anything, I relate to Malaysians, Indonesians and Chinese the most.
RosscoeDropsDimes Only Filipino Americans identify as Pacific Islander. I’ve never once met a Filipino from the mainland who said they were Pacific Islander. Even if you identify as Pacific Islander, you can’t force me or the rest of the Philippines to identify as Pacific Islander. You don’t get to invalidate a whole nation’s identity because you don’t want to be asian. I understand why many Filipinos don’t want to identify as asian. Filipinos and other Southeast Asians are rejected by Northeast Asians all the time for having darker skin and that is indeed fucked up. But even though I and every other Filipino faces rejection from Northeast Asians, I won’t stop calling myself asian because of them. I am asian and I am proud no matter what anyone says.
eclip_tech Let’s end this “Filipinos are Pacific Islanders and not Asian” once and for all. Filipino dialects are apart of the Austronesian language right? That’s why they feel they are Pacific Islanders. For those who don’t know, languages from Taiwanese, Indonesian, Malaysian, Hawaiian, Samoan, Tongan, etc. are also apart of the Austronesian language. So they ARE ASIAN. While Hawaiian, Samoan, Tongan and every other Polynesian and Micronesian are the true Pacific Islanders, they are still apart of the Asian family cause they migrated from Asia. Asian brothers & sisters, not only should you celebrate every Asian holiday and go to every Asian festival. Go celebrate every Pacific Islander holiday and festivals. My Island brothers & sisters, vice versa. And a lot of people don’t know that we have Asian/ Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May. Celebrate that as well!
These are not representative of actual Filipinos, these are Fil-Ams, and are notoriously dense when it comes to their own culture. We are Austronesians, not Polynesians
If they don't want to be Asians, they got no business running around telling others to be Filipino because we don't consider them Filipinos or Asians anymore. We have a saying here: those who do not hold on to our ways are worse than the smell of fishkill.
I'm a Filipino and I (and actually most Filipinos) don't even have the Pacific Islander identity up for debate because they're not even aware of that. Most will simply say they're Filipinos, or if they're trying to be more inclusive, they'll just say they're Southeast Asians.
harambee I’m from cebu, the middle island :) through the long course of history and many descendants of voyagers, Malay, for some reason, I feel a lot closer to the word islander since we are an island in the pacific, living similar lifestyles in the tropics. Our languages, tones and connotations sound quite similar compared to rather well known Asian countries. Along with that, I’m unsure with the vowels but since the islands vary with over 100 dialects, it’s a safer bet that we sound more islander in terms of pronunciations but along with living conditions, and how our people used to look like before being annexed. But like I said, I think it’s more of a personal preference :)
helldeirch philippines is more connected to most Asian lands than those pacific islands. Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia all the way to Taiwan used to be connected with land bridges. Philippines is separated by mariana trench from those pacific islands.
Kyutie Pie Sure, there are some commonalities even as far as Madagascar based on archaeological facts. But when it comes to identification, we Filipinos are not really confused whether we are considered as Asians or not.
Yup. It's only the Filipino Americans who have this self issue with themselves. It's because Asians are stereotyped so much that is' not appealing to be Asian so Filipinos want to stray as far away as possible to being Asian. It's sad really.
I'm a Filipino who grew up in New Zealand. If I ever told my Tongan and Samoan friends that I'm a Pacific Islander, it wouldn't take them 2 seconds to say "f*** are you on about, bro"
Only Filipinos in America have this identity crisis. Every other Filipino out there knows that Philippines is part of Asia and that they're ASIANS, not Pacific Islanders. *rolls eyes* Oh and I'm Filipino living in Australia.
I agree really agree with you. I mean if you ask any Filipino in the Philippines they would consider themselves Asian. When Did beginning Pacific Islander began! I mean for all the years I've been on earth, I was considered Asian.
Not gonna lie though, I have a couple of filipino firends who always be like switching. I know I ain't filipino and all but shit y'all are asian bruh. But I always feels them because some of them are brought up like an islander. However, I'm not cool when they're just considering themselves Pacific Islander when they just wannabe hawiian or like samoan or something, trynna be cool type of thing.
True! Maybe some Filipinos aren't proud of their culture. If they are born as a pacific islander their Pacific Islander, If their born as Filipino their Asian
I'm proud to be Pinoy except for one thing, we didn't end up a football oriented society. Before when The Philippines was under Spanish rule it was football but changed when The Americans arrived. While the World Cup is closing to the semi-finals. Most Pinoys here do not care about it but are always hyped when it comes to The PBA or NBA playoffs. Honestly, Filipinos are better off excelling in football which is already happening starting with the Azkals.
Only Fil-Ams consider themselves Pacific Islanders. All the other Filipinos around the world who are proud of their Filipino roots consider themselves Southeast Asians.
Dude seriously, having grown up in the Philippines, I'm shocked that some Filipino Americans consider themselves Pacific Islanders. Where on earth did this idea even come from? Is it because they're Hawaiian Filipinos? Honestly that's the only sensible reason I can think of.
Lala I’m Fil-Am and have no idea where this ridiculous idea that we aren’t Asian came from. Going by their “logic,” then people of Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia should be considered “islanders” too...except they, like any sane Filipino should, all consider themselves Asian.
You have a point maybe they were Half Filipinos from Hawaii because Hawaii is in Pacific Ocean..and NO Filipinos in the Philippine Islands tag themselve as Pacific Islander because in geography the islands is JUST facing the Pacific NOT within Pacific..or were gonna failed in geography subject by then.hahahah.
No its because of Immigrating Filipinos in America a long time ago. During those times, America and Asia were not in good terms and since Philippines is an asian country, it will be difficult for American government to let Filipinos in their country. So, what's the solution? US categorize PHILIPPINES AS PACIFIC ISLANDER. That's why up until now in America some still consider Filipinos as Pacific Islander.
Rayanna zabini I'm Korean too. Don't worry about people like TheHispanicFilipino. There will always be people like him/her unfortunately. But seriously... "peanuts"??? What the hell??? I've never heard any Korean ever use that either, lol. But you're right. Every country has negative stereotypes for others. Some of the stuff I've heard other Asians say about Koreans... damn... it's definitely not as cute as "peanuts," lol. Anyways, Asians seriously need to stop attacking one another. That's why I like to support the Fung Brothers. They and a few others like Wongfu are really doing their part.
omg, I'm a Filipino and I hope you guys won't think that all Filipinos are like TheHispanicFilipino. Don't mind him/her because that's just her opinion where he/she's being a racist.
Holy crap..touchy much?? lol....T_T we r ALL asians at the end of the day...!! yeh jus don't take what TheHispanicFilipino says to heart...from a fellow southeast ASIAN chic
@Rayanna zabini: he said it's ironic that A korean guy would say that because . I am not defending him, I personally haven't heard pf those stereotypes before. I just want to point out that TheHispanicFilipino isn't thinking that famousamos is "representing the whole country of korea". @cobbs: he's probably referring to koreans back in your country and not korean-americans. Koreas is a very homogenous society after all. It hasn't seen a surge of foreigners (workers and tourists alike) until recently, along with the rise of the hallyu wave. If you've seen EatYourKimchi's video about stereotypes on foreigners by koreans, you'll know that they aren't really as cute as 'peanut'. The ones attached to filipinos are thatt we are uneducated. To be honest, I'd rather be called ugly than uneducated. But then again I'm not basing my view of korea solely on vlogs by 2 canadians. I am in love with the country, the culture, and the kdramas;) and f*ck stereotypes! A sweeping comment will always be a fallacy in logic. I just watch this channel for fun. Sorry for my lengthy post-_-
cobbs Rayanna zabini Lol way to be VERY disingenuous with your responses. EVeryone knows that Koreans are VERY nationalistic and if any Asian group is racist, it's them. Go look up Korean History Channel and Hines Ward videos. Koreans are very judgmental and "re-forming" is a cheap way of saying that they aren't up to par to BEAUTY STANDARDS, which means they aren't considered beautiful until surgery. Get real.
Japan is also an island, that doesn't make the Japanese "Pacific Islanders". The Philippines is an archipelago that is very close to the mainland, much like Japan. It is not a remote group of islands in the middle of the Pacific like Guam, Samoa, or Fiji. Sorry, Pinoy, you're Asian, embrace it.
Well, yes but the Filipino culture is quite different then the East Asian cultures. East Asian languages tend to be similar and some people even believe that Chinese is based off of Sanskrit. But not Filipino. Filipino is like Spanish + Malay/Australian Aborgines
Nathan Au Filipino people are more closely related to Indonesian and Malaysians. Pacific Islanders are distantly related to those groups. Generally, Pacific Islander is meant to be applied to the more remote islands.
Tyrion YES! No Filipino born and raised in the Philippines would ever consider themselves anything other than Asian. I have never even heard of a Filipino considering themselves a Pacific Islander until I went to high school here in the States. I was flabbergasted!
On behalf of ALL THE FILIPINOS FROM THE PHILIPPINES ITSELF, I would just like to say WE CONSIDER OURSELVES AS ASIANS, SOUTHEAST ASIANS TO BE EXACT, and this so called identity crises isn't much of an issue here. Those halflings from overseas are the ones who are confused and is shameless enough to use the term "Filipino" referring to themselves,as if they were from the country itself. They won't decide the identity of the people here. They really don't have much of a say in here to be honest. If they're confused on what they are, then it's their problem. They're making us FILIPINOS FROM THE PHILIPPINES seem like we don't know what we are.
these fil-ams would consider themselves as pacific islander due to the fact that racial profiling would hit them hard. haven't heard anyone from the Philippines saying that they're pacific islander.
I totally agree with you! To be honest im a filipino living in the Philippines since birth and most of us considered ourselves as ASIANS ... these fil-ams are the only ones who brought the pacific islander thing?
@pinoy islander lol you're completely detached with your motherland and it shows. Bys vietnam is also southeast asian just like us. I suggest go study geography again smfh
If you ask Filipinos who are in the Philippines, we would definately say we're Asian, not Pacific Islanders. Like, dude, wtf? Philippines is in Southeast Asia!

Actually there are a lot of filipinos that their eyes are small that you would suspect them that they are koreans or chinese but they are pure filipino.
@Vanuush Nightcore OPM there are still some ... I watch some people who got tested DNA Ancestry.. Some of them are on those parts that are not reached by colonizers. They are brown and has curly hair

eclip_tech hmmm I’m Filipino and I was born in California and I’ve always identified myself as Asian and nothing more. I don’t want to consider myself more Pacific Islander or hispanic. Not that I hate Hispanics or Pacific Islanders but I view us as more Asian than anything else really. Like I’d rather be called Asian than Hispanic or a Pacific Islander
Like I’m not even sure how or why Filipinos in America think they are not Asian like to me that blows my mind. If anything, Filipinos that don’t consider themselves Asian are a disgrace to our culture like seriously
I’m a first generation born Filipino here in Australia. Because of where my parents came from and our culture I will always represent myself and future generations that way. I like to think that I’m educated as to who we truly are and I don’t think that we are Pacific Islanders. I consider ourselves as Asians and I don’t know what the shame is between the stereotypes, maybe insecurity, who knows. Filipinos in America are pretty much one of the first to go abroad because of nursing and what not so most of them span across different gens and a lot of them are at least 2nd generation. I have some family up in the US and they arrived because of my Lolo’s (grandfather) brother. I’ve spoken to them before and they’re pretty white washed, not that’s a bad thing but they’ve already forgotten their roots and origins. Most of them don’t understand a word of Tagalog but know their basics (greetings). Although I am first gen Filipino Australian I don’t know how to construct a grammatically correct sentence but I clearly understand what all of my Filipino family friends are saying and is really common nature for most people. I have a lot of friends who moved here at a young age who completely forgot how to speak in general, and one of them was like 9 years old at the time. I’m currently teaching my self to speak fluently in Tagalog including my dads local dialect so I can hopefully communicate with newcomers and my children this way I’m the future. I’m proud to say that I’m Filipino and we are Asian.
Jazmin Deleon the problem is calling them asians. Because asians in a global standpoint are far easterners. The yellows. Russians are asians. Indians are asians. Arabs ar asians. Persians are asians. Yet for south eastern, they are simply called asians? Not good. Itll be easy for them to be assimilated into an invading group. Even far more so now that the chinese hold a majority of their economy. A big natural resource territory is under chinese flag now. And now you are helping them culturally assimilate to asians. Once they fall, the rest will follow. In AUS, a large influx of chinese population have grown. Then what? Youd call them asians as well? Before philippine independence, the "asians" are only but a small portion of the population. They are now the majority. So to speak in such a way is very serious. While there are some merit to what you speak of, filipinos are at risk of truly becoming a part of the far east. Or the middle east. No clue how ISIS got there but hey. Did i mention the middle east was there before the west? And now the east are taking their claim for the land. Thats why i discourage you on identifying them as simply asians.
I was born and still live in the PH and I consider Filipinos as Asian. I mean we're part of South East *ASIA* . Where did those Fil-Ams got the idea that we're Pacific Islanders? I mean Japan, Taiwan Indonesia and Parts of Malaysia are parts of the Pacific Islands but they consider themselves Asians. We Pinoys love to eat rice that other Asians love too so we're Asian... that is from the South East part. Come on we're Asians and we Asians need to stick together like Rice.
If they don't want to be Asians, they got no business running around telling others to be Filipino. Ikinakahiya namin ang mga kagaya nilang mangmang sa tradisyon at kulturang pinoy... mga ungas.

As a Filipino, we are definitely South East Asians but the Pacific Islanders are like my long lost brothers and sisters. I can definitely connect with a lot of Pacific Islanders here in Australia. They have the same humility, feeds everybody, they smile a lot and have the same warmth. It's also interesting to point out that before the Spaniards, Americans, Japanese, Chinese etc. came, early Filipino settlers were described to be tattooed indigenous "painted' people and the tattoo art, which often covered most of their bodies have very similar pattern to the tattoos of the people I meet from Polynesian countries here in Australia. Samoan language is also pretty similar to Filipino. They call eyes =mata, sky =lagi etc.
yeah im filipino, and i was told by my parents that im asian so- plus i also searched it up. its actually annoying how when people say they are asian, they always think of chinese, japanese and korean. but they are forgetting a lot of others 😂😂
I agree. When you say Asian, they already just think China, Japan, Korea. But then again, we are not that much different. Like how one of my friends thought that all White people are American. He sometimes unintentionally offends some white people who are not Americans by greeting them "Hey Joe!"
Philippines is a Southeast Asian Nation located in the Western Pacific. Filipinos are *ASIAN* with a shared ancestry of the Pacific Islanders (due to being Austronesian) and a "fornmer" Hispanic country (due to heavy influence in culture, religion, laws and its "former" official Spanish language). *BUT FILIPINOS ARE SOUTHEAST ASIAN* *Not* a *Hispanic country* *nor a Pacific Islander* or even an ethnic Malay. End of conversation.
funny thing here is, they think the word Austronesian and Pacific Islander is Interchangeable, which is not. Actually Austronesians was came from ASIA no from Oceania
A message to all you confused Filipinos living in Hawaii and especially in the USA don't confuse yourself! Pacific Islander is a term used for indigenous people who's origins are Polynesian or Melanesian.Filipinos are not Pacific Islanders, Latino,White or Black You Filipinos are 100% ASIAN! Even Filipinos back in the Philippines know they are ASIAN!
+Nathan Alley No not necessarily, Russia ( aka The USSR) are located within the north of Asia, but they are consider to be part of Europe. Because several are Jews, but not all of them because certain groups vary by beliefs or who they believe in.
Filipinos are Southeast Asians. They speak -Austroasiatic- Austronesian languages just like other SE Asians (Indonesians, Malaysians, etc.) who they share historic/cultural ties and common ancestry with. Pacific Islanders are Maoris, Fijians, Tongans, Samoans, Hawaiians, etc. who have much less in common with Filipinos.
wrong. Filipinos speak Austronesian languages. Austro-Asiatic languages are on Mainland Southeast Asia and they're not related to Austronesians at all. Austronesians are: Taiwanese Aborigines, Filipinos, Malaysians, Indonesians, Timorese, Madagascar people, Chams, Polynesians, Micronesians, and Melanesians
geno314 maybe he's right, because I see in Indonesia in general culture , temple, costum traditional , music , even language, especially Java , Sumatra,Kalimatan etc ( except Eastern Indonesian )more close to mainland Asia than to Austronesian group, You can see sturuktur gentika from Indonesians different with Austronesians in general
***** well Western Indonesians have more in common with Mainland Southeast Asians because Mainland Southeast Asia influenced them a lot, but Central and Eastern Indonesia are more similar to the Philippines and Melanesia
geno314 You're right, my mistake. That's what I meant to say. Thanks for the correction. Here's how I would divide the SE Asia/Pacific cultural regions: *Mainland SE Asia* Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Guangxi, Yunnan *Lower SE Asia* Indonesia, Malaysia, Phillipines, etc. *Pacific Islands* Micronesia, Melanesia, Polynesia
geno314 In Indonesia, we know we are more familiar the with geography / culture from all over the Indonesian archipelago such as: Western Indonesian island covering of grup : Java, Sumatra, Borneo ( West Indonesia ) East Indonesian island covering of grup : Sulawesi, NTT, NTB, Flores, Moluccan and Papua( East Indonesia ), this is I meant. Sometimes Sulawesi, Bali, NTB entered Central Indonesian . Yeah there is a difference between Indonesian and Austronesian are: Culture of Indonesia at the beginning was Hindu / Buddhist later in this modern mixed with Islamic, Confucian, Christian etc. almost nothing in Austronesian culture.
Filipinos who say they’re Pacific Islanders are most likely from America. Many Filipinos from the Homeland consider themselves Asians. Just because they are located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean Doesn’t mean they’re Pacific Islanders. People are called Pacific Islanders because they are from islands that make up the term “Pacific Islands”. If you look it up on a map, the Philippines are nowhere near Pacific Islands....
We are genetically connected to Malaysia and Indonesia, so this Fil-ams should never set foot in the Philippines, they will only bring bad luck to our rice.
That doesn’t make any sense. You know that Filipinos and the people of the Malay are genetically and culturally different from north East Asian people like Chinese, Japanese and Koreans.
JonJonBoi You must be forgetting that Asia is an entire continent with multiple different ethnic groups & people who have different features. Filipinos are actually genetically more related to Chinese & apart of the Austronesian family. To be considered Pacific Islander, the country has to be in the Oceania region.
I am from the Philippines and I (we) don't consider ourselves as Pacific Islanders cause were not. We are also Asians "Southeast Asian". Free to search in Philippine History or maybe Google.
There are however a lot of filipinos in hawaii because of the pineapple farming thing. Where Americans got a load of filipino farmers from the PH, promised them a bettera life and shipped them to Hawaii

Janae Ammugauan search "Austronesian migration" and you'll see that all Filipinos, Malays, Indonesian, and Pacific Islanders have the same origin in Taiwan. There is no separation between Asians and Pacific Islanders. Pacific Islanders came from Asia, and they went through the Philippines. We share the same DNA.

Filipinos, Malaysians and Indonesians all share the same root (towards a certain extent, you would even consider Southern Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodians and Melanesians as part of the same group), our languages have many similarities (though I wouldn't say as close as South Slavic languages). We're all Austronesians but people tend to differentiate us because of our colonial background and religion.
+Farisss92 May I add , the natives of Taiwan and people of Madagascar are Austronesians too. The Austronesians are world greatest seafarers and explorers.. Captain cook was late by thousands of years when he landed on Hawaii.
Wenyou Xiao Still the same root, Tagalog is an Austronesian language and Filipinos look more Malaysian/Indonesian than Pacific Islander. Their culture is probably more similar to Pacific Islanders' because of Christianity (both regions believe in the same region). But Filipinos still remain part of 'Nusantara'. 'Serumpun'.
Well, let's be honest here. We do not have sufficient study of pre-colonial times. There are only a few books written by Spaniards when they first encountered Philippines. Unfortunately a lot of those books were destroyed by Spaniards for us to forget what we had way back. I wouldn't be surprise if some Filipinos get confused with their own identity because of it.
For those people that consider themselves Pacific Islanders: let me just leave this here: Pacific Islanders: *Polynesian Islands* cook island, Easter island/Rapa Nui, French Polynesia, Hawaii, Midway island, New Zealand/Aotearoa, Niue, Norfolk Island, Pitcairn Islands, American Samoa, Samoa, Tahiti, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Rotuma. *Micronesian Islands* Caroline Islands, Chuuk, Kiribati, Guam, Kosrae, Palau , Saipan/Northern Mariana Islands, Nauru, Pohnpei, Marshall Island, Wake Islands, Yap. *Melanesian Islands* Fiji, Maluku Islands, New Caledonia, West Papau, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea ❤... Taichi Winchester I’m pretty sure the Philippines can fall under the category of Pacific Islanders, because they share the same DNA as those in the Pacific. They also share similarities in language and culture. I think the Ainu, the aboriginals of Japan were of Austronesian descent. A majority of the Japanese population are of East Asian descent.
Northern Japanese are different from the ones in the mainland , Northern Japanese came from russia while the ones from the mainland came from China , Taiwan, and Korea ........... a Japanese historian told me and my family when we went to Hokkaido for vacation. He also said there was discrimination (local population in Hokkaido were cosidered inferior) a long time ago because they looked different and they were not as civilized as the ones on the main land.

The difference is that Polynesians are a mixture of Lapita and Papuan. The Papuans have been in the Pacific alot longer than Austronesians. Polynesians developed their own cultures, thus do not consider themselves as Asians.

Philippines and China has been doing trade for a very looong time, even before the Spanish era. Which explains why there are lots of different noodle dishes, rice, etc. in the Mainland Southeast Asia and Maritime Southeast Asia
I told my boyfriend before, who's Filipino (born/raised in the Philippines), that there are a good number of Filipinos out there that don't consider themselves asian...he had a look on his face like "that's the stupidest shit I've ever heard" HAHAH....
This is what I'm saying. People who are actually born and raised here in the Philippines, Filipinos may be of both ethnicity and nationality or either, will say they're Asians when asked. I would bet my left pinky 3 people out of 50 will say otherwise. Lol.
FearFanatic86 a good number of them are biracial or have mixed ancestry so yeah it makes sense that they wouldn’t necessarily identify with American stereotypes of what an asian is.
I was practically raised all but one of the years of my life here in the USA as child of OFW’s but whenever me or my fil friends hear another fil claim to be pacific islander I swear that every time it takes an intervention from god to stope me from slapping the shit outta them.
Some of them think they're not asian just because they have a rounder eyes than the typical east asian eyes 😁 bet they never checked their southeastern asian neighbors; we indonesian, malaysian, heck even thailand got a bit bigger eyes and tanned skin compare to the east asian region.
Indeed. Filipinos who considered themselves as Hispanic or Pacific Islanders shall not be deserve to be called Filipino. The Filipinos who considered themselves Asians are the true ones.
I'm almost full Filipino with a little Chinese and I live in Hawaii -- which is where a lot of different Pacific Islanders live (Micronesian, Samoan, Tongon, etc.). I don't think of myself as a Pacific Islander at all. Sooooo different. When I visited Japan recently, Japanese often referred to me as "Southeast Asians", not sure sure how we somehow got a label to be Pacific Islanders. But, I agree with others, we jungle asians. Rofl
Genevieve Antonio true most eastern Asians think of China, Korea, and japan when they refer to Asians. They make the distinction between those three countries and South-Eastern Asia. Because Southeast Asia, while in Asia, is culturally different and racially different than northEastern Asia.
John Perez The Spanish caste system. Spaniards, mestizos, filipinos, negritos... etc. Why do you think everyone in the Philippines still claims Spanish ancestry?
Correction: It's mostly Fil-Ams who claim that they're Pacific Islanders. Go look up the videos of Speakout and other TH-cam videos, many Filipinos from the Philippines who move to the USA say that FIl-Ams discriminate against them. So it's not only that Fil-Ams don't want to be seen as Asian, the real issue has always been Fil-Ams don't even want to identify with Filipinos.
QuaDead are you filipino or have you ever been in the philippines? i can assure you no one here thinks were pacific islanders, i didn't even know this was a thing until i saw this video. i'm filipino, lived all my life here in my country, and never once have i heard people here deny that we are asians.
I thought this was a ridiculous topic until i was tasked to look at US official data or stats. Some do officially categorize the race of Filipinos as Pacific Islanders. Someone tagged Pinoys as Pacific Islanders in US database a long time ago. They (Fil-Ams) aren't being ridiculous because that was taught to them by the US system. It was memorable finding myself arguing if we are Asians for the first time (with a Fil-Am)-argument ongoing despite me pointing out that the entire Filipino population living in PHI would be wrong if he is right. They have been conditioned to think that by the US system. It's not their fault.
as someone who's majored in Asian Studies, the answer is yes, Filipinos are Asians. you gotta remember that Indonesia is south of the Philippines and closer to the west Pacific islands such as the cook islands, the to read straight and PNG. But is Indonesia Asian or Pacific Island? Asian of course! The more interesting question is, are the Pacific islanders Asians? the answer is in their DNA. yup, their ancestors are Asians.
JancenRevo Indonesian is Asian they culture, historish, food and geaorapgy in west/north indonesian very close to mainlaind asian. and in east indonesian is oceania or pacific island. in USA and Europe considered Indonesia is Asian ,although there are several islands located in Oceania. then race of people in Indonesian they considered are south mongoloid/austronesian race.
Bolpin 234 you're missing the point. Of course Indonesia is Asian. That is exactly my point. By citing indonesia as an example, it dismantles the argument that Filipinos are not Asians. If you'll look at Indonesia and Philippines from a geographical point of view, Indonesia is closer to Australia, PNG, and other Torres strait islands, nonetheless, Indonesia is Asian. So why do people assume that Philippines is not Asian when it has a further proximity from Australia and Oceania? Do you get my point?
JancenRevo west indonesian is very close to singapore, malaysia ,thailand but very far to australian and new guinea especialy darwin.,east indonesian near to oceania but far to west indo and mainlaind asian. look jakarta you fly of bali to jakarta is same timefly of jakarta to singapore.Yes btw Filipinos is Asian..maybe people have their argument.
JancenRevo oke ,East Indonesia is near pacific or oceania, but not mean indonesian like java, borneo sumatera is same like philipines and east indonesian geografi close to pacific ..java ,borneo and sumatera is west indonesia is close to sea asian mainland than to pacific island
What's confusing and annoying is that when people say ASIANS they only remember the people from EAST ASIA... Asians have small eyes and "flatter" nose bridges? Filipinos have the biggest eyes among Asians?.. REALLY NOW?!? Did everyone forget that Indian people and people from West Asia have bigger , deeper set of eyes and well defined nose bridges? I'm a Filipino and Filipinos are definitely Asians since the Philippines is part of Southeast Asia.
They forget Indians because most of them think that Indian is another race. In other words, they don't/didn't know that Indians are in fact Asians. (I might be wrong, someone correct this please so I don't embarass myself lol)
Claire Ros Racially they're "South Asian," but yes they can still be considered Asian technically since they come from the continent of Asia, as do Middle Easterners.
just let you know that when americans say asian they mean people with a similar look like chinese .. it became like this since people in korea china indonesia japan share similar type of eyes and face .. but in general all the people in asia are included asian
As a American in my opinion I think Filipinos are really great at singing asides from singers but whenever I listen to thier songs I felt like thier telling you the meaning the feel of the song and more controlled and Philippines are Asians.....not Pacific islanders...
Philippines as Pacific Islander doesn't makes sense. Japan archipelago also lies on the west pacific, so you can also consider Japanese Pacific Islanders? Of course NOT
James Japan use a different alphabet system and culture wise They use chopsticks and Filipinos are a mixbreed, like America. There are alot of polynesians, chinese, american, european, american looking people in there. Technically they're asian but Pacific islander isnt wrong either because of the native Filipinos DNA being similar to the Polynesian DNA.
What the...? We are Asians! The Philippines is in ASIA, hence... There are East Asians, which include Chinese, Japanese, Mongolians, and Koreans, South-east Asians, which include the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. Other parts that are little known as Asian, are Central Asia, which includes Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Western Asia, which is better known as the Middle East, and Southern Asia, which includes India. Asia is not just the "orientals" or East Asians as you call them. I have never heard of us Filipinos referred to as "pacific islanders". When I hear that term what comes to mind are smaller islands like Hawaii and Fiji, which are not part of Asia anymore.
JRZY DY The United States and the Philippines both acknowledge that Filipinos are Asian. It's that simple. The problem here is that people are ignorant about countries in Asia, which is diverse in itself and try to label "Asian" as all the same.
A lot of words filipinos use are Spanish words just written differently but yes they are Asians and we Mexicans love and respect our Filipino people 🙌🏽🇵🇭🇲🇽
Savage FAM i’m like not asian at all but my spanish ancestors came to the philippines and decided to settle in mexico pampanga when it was deemed capital of pampanga. But I’m pretty much mexican, spanish, cuban and some other latin blood
Savage FAM hi i'm filipino and I really love mexicanos and their musics. I also wanted to learn mexican language for real coz I find it beautiful and sexy idk😂
Any Filipino that believes they are not asian is a disgrace to our culture and ancestors. We are Asian and there’s no doubt about it. Like this really shouldn’t be a question anymore. Hell, I’m even more mad that we lost and or don’t learn learn our writing system anymore
Filipinos are Asian. I am a Filipino citizen, born in San Juan, and lives in Antipolo. According to my mother, I have ancestors who come from/lived in Malaysia and China. Therefore, I, a Filipino, am undoubtedly Asian. I am so triggered by people who have the audacity to complain that "Filipinos say they are not Pacific Islanders..." Are you kidding me!? We are Asians!
"A 2020 genetic study on Southeast Asian populations focusing on ethnic groups in Vietnam by Liu et al. 2020 found that most sampled groups are closely related to East Asians and carry mostly "East Asian-related" ancestry. Modern Austronesian and Austroasiatic speaking populations of Southeast Asia were found to have mostly East Asian-related ancestry (89% to 96%, with 94% on average). Taiwanese indigenous peoples had on average 99% East Asian-related ancestry. Kra-Dai-speaking populations had, similar to the Taiwanese indigenous peoples, nearly exclusively East Asian-related ancestry.[33]" The Study is called "Extensive Ethnolinguistic Diversity in Vietnam Reflects Multiple Sources of Genetic Diversity" and it can be found at NCBI (a credible, peer-reviewed website). The study was focused on Vietnamese ancestry, but genetic of all Asians from eastern Asian groups were sampled. (East and Southeast Asian groups.)
@@ainmiky4620 it's very obvious lmfao can't you spot it? Are u even Filipino? But yeah I hate it when some Filipinos says that. Latinos from south America assumes that we're trying hard to be a Latino when in fact Filo culture can still be called Unique compared to their entirely Hispanic culture that looks the same with each other, nothing left with their original pre colonial culture😂 our pre Hispanic culture are still alive in the modern days and not just the Culture that Filipinos ado/apted from Spain😌
@@picklerick4588 i understand we are influenced by Spain.... but not to the point of Latin American culture. That's why I disagreed calling Phillippines as Latin of Asia because it's not in the same level of spanish influence as Spain had in the Latin Americas. We also have a lot of Chinese influence from food (siopao, siomai, pancit, etc...) and even ancestry (we certainly have more Chinoys than we have people with significant Spanish blood). I think 30% of Pinoys are of Chinese ancestry. This differentiates us from Latin America.
I was born/raised here in the Philippines. Since the beginning, I consider myself as Asian because Philippines is in the Southeast Asia. I never heard of Pacific Islanders before sorry (even in history classes)... Do they belong in Oceania?
Philippines is in Asia so literally Filipinos are Asian In terms of its culture it is a mix of Hispanic and Southeast Asian culture Hay Komplikado maging Pinoy 😁😂
MIL RODEL PALAMOS Spanish is not our culture. due to colonization that was enforced on us and some became brain washed and accented it. we are considered Pacific Islander and Asian out of anything. we are a mixture of Chinese, Indonesian, Malaysia, Vietnamese, Polynesian and Austrianasian. sense those people migrated to the P.I. before the Spanish.
MIL RODEL PALAMOS the original Filipinos were black (negritos) although I hate that word. Filipino-persons having origins in any of the original peoples of the Philippine islands. Asian-persons with origin in original people of Far East, Southeast Asia or Indian subcontinent which included china Japan and Korea
Reggie Noble the original Filipinos are not negritos. the negritos were one set of people's accompanying a certain part of the Philippines. They arrived to the Philippines like all others at a different point in the past.
Rock S they are the original south east asians of those islands yes. South East Asians shouldn't even claim the name filipino. Its disrespectful to us Asians. claiming what the spanish said we were instead claiming what we were before they came. Lapu Lapu would of been very disappointed.
Well that would be a little contradictory because what was Asia called before, a little history of the Asian name "The word Asia originated from the Ancient Greek word Ἀσία, first attributed to Herodotus (about 440 BCE) in reference to Anatolia or to the Persian Empire, in contrast to Greece and Egypt. It originally was just a name for the east bank of the Aegean Sea, an area known to the Hittites as Assuwa." Being called after a place who got its name for what ever reason is nothing wrong, and places or lands name changed for various reasons by different sects of people in different times of History. That goes for all lands on this earth. But I find history very interesting. Always good to learn from each other.
BORN AND RAISED HERE IN PHILIPPINES. PROUDLY SHOUT TO THE WORLD THAT I'M A FILIPINO, NOT ONLY BY HEART BUT BY BLOOD. AND I WILL DIE BEING A PROUD ASIAN. (signing-off)....
As a full Filipino born and raised in Philippines. We are southeast Asian and I was so confuse when I arrived here in America when there was a good amount of people that were claiming they were Pacific Islanders…. Like huh?! Lol
I've never heard of a filipino refer to themselves as pacific islander. The common thread I've noticed with filipinos is their correcting non asians that they're asian. I view filipinos as a multi-racial country because of the history with spaniards and chinese in their country.
+Jennifer Holloway It's usually Filipino-American males on the West Coast that claim this, as demonstrated in the video. It's mostly due to the negative connotation that stereotypes Asian males that there is a growing number of Fil-Am males who want to separate themselves from the word "Asian". As you can see in the video, even some admit if it's positive they will claim to be Asian, but negative then they won't. It's an identity crisis if you really look at it.
+Jennifer Holloway agree all filipinos living in the philippines consider themselves asian, only those filipinos living in usa call themselves pacific islander.
well, filipinos are totally mixed people of different blood..you can see some looks hispanics, chinese, africans(very few), indians, different features. there's no such strong facial nor physical feature that is remarkable.like me, my mom is quarter spanish and my dad is quarter japanese but we are filipinos..it's quiet hard to elaborate our nationalism..wish this could answer your thoughts :-P
+Jennifer Holloway Same here, I have cousins and relatives born in the US and I've never heard them refer themselves as pacific islanders. I mean, what's wrong being Asian? Lol.
***** I mean most fil-am they're considered Pacific islander cause they living in the state but don't mind me ok and asian too. Some Filipinos they're considered Pacific islander.why they don't embraced asian .I'm disappoint
When we say Pacific Islanders we unusually mean Polynesian, Micronesian and Melanesian. Countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines aren't in these three groups. You guys are just Asians living on an island, just as UK are Europeans living on an island.
Never heard pacific islander before? But yes we Filipinos are asians ! Ever since i was a little kid i dont know that term pacific islander.. But i know histories people from south east asia came from pacific island thru boats and bring their culture to those black people there.. Those austronesian people are naturally seafarer people if you go to Philippines our balangay mean "house boats or community group of house boats turned into modern day term baranggay which mean communities So yes basically we Filipino are asian! But we bring culture to those black people in the pacific..pacific islanders they are not sailers those people are natural born on those islands... austronesians from south east asia are the real seafarers ! They sails in the pacific they brought mangoes. Coconuts chickens .. taro ..sweet potatoes. Bananas culture of tattoos . Lapita and jade culture ...the best evidence is jade culture its very austronesian culture and its very Filipinos

Bruh! We’re member of the ASEAN(Association of SouthEast Asian Nation) So clearly we’re asian! Haha! And to that guy who said it’s because Philippines is an island on Pacific Ocean, bruh so does Japan Taiwan is on Pacific Ocean. Lol
Lol. Exactly. Plus, only one side of the Philippines is Pacific Ocean. Aren’t Japan and Taiwan literally IN the pacific ocean? But wait, are they both considered asians and pacific islanders? Idts. That’s just not how it’s done. Pacific islanders i think are those in the deep pacific with cultures very different from Asian roots: malay, chinese, etc. Unless I’m wrong. I could be.
Dear Filipinos who consider themselves as Pacific Islanders instead of Asians... You may live on thousands of islands on the western edge of the Pacific but you're not really in the Pacific. To qualify that you're a Pacific Islander you have to be surrounded by the Pacific Ocean like Hawaii, Samoa or New Zealand. You may be geographically off the main Asian continent but so are the Indonesians and the Malays who are also classified within the Asian race. So if you do consider yourselves as Pacific Islanders instead of Asians just because you're between Asia and the Pacific while living on islands that means you'll have to include the Malays, Indonesians, Taiwanese and Japanese as well. But in reality those aforementioned peoples are still classified as Asians which you should really be. There are even Filipinos who have Japanese/Chinese/Korean ancestry and even lighter skin color than the others which therefore makes them more as Asians than Pacific Islanders. But do you really want to go with that classification to assume that you're from the middle of the Pacific instead of between Asia and the Pacific? Puh-lease... Doing so is as stupid as a White American considering him/herself as purely Native American instead of Caucasian/White/European just because they're born and living on the American continent (no offense to those who have partial Native American or any other minority ancestry). Sincerely, A Filipino American who considers himself as Asian while embracing all things American
The fact that people bring up the fact that we don't use chopsticks proves that we aren't Asian makes me laugh too. Filipinos, including me, will always consider ourselves Asian. If we are considered Pacific Islanders, you can count Taiwan one as well.
Shout out to the Filipinos!!! Coming from a South Pacific Islander. I confirm that you guys are definitely not Islanders lol but I sure love your guys food tho
Well I was born in the Philippines and had my DNA tested and it shows 58 % Asian and 35 % Polynesia/Pacific Islander, some Indian and central Asia Kzakstan etc.. There is truth to Filipinos having Pacific Islander bloodline. However I do consider myself Asian. Having lived in HI for many years, many Filipinos and even other ethnic groups in Hawaii call themselves Pacific Islander even though they really are not. It's a weird Hawaiian Asian thing. They would rather be known as Hawaiian than being Filipino, Chinese or whatever their ethnic background is.
Unless the Philippines is located in Europe then that's called a European country, why debate about it when in fact it really is located in Asia. Foolish senses!!!
Filipinos in Philippines identify with Asian (southeast asian) and definately not Pacific Islander. Philippines co-founded ASEAN, we attend ASEAN Games, we look more like Thai, Malysian, and our Indonesian neighbor. There is no doubt that the ancient people of the Philippines might have sailed to the vast pacific ocean, but damn that was thousands of years ago. We dont really care. At the end of the day we are just Filipinos, we have spanish sir names, we like to eat, have fiestas, crack jokes, we have the best beaches. Sall good.
I wouldnt say losing your country to asians is a good thing. If i were you, id call myself southeastern than simply asians. Cuz asians are the far easterners. Not middle eastern, not southern, not even northern. Lmao, i would love you call a russian asian. Lets see what happens.
wanderingbufoon, any country and her citizens who are in Asia are Asians. Middle Easterns are Asians. East Asians are Asians. South Asians are Asians. And Southeast Asians are Asians. People think that Asian is synonymous to East Asians, good grief!
for those who think the Philippines is considered pacific islander... does that make a country like Japan pacific islander as well? it is a island in the pacific
I didn’t even know who the pacific islanders were until Moana came out, that’s when I decided to learn more about the islands. Amerikanong hilaw sila, they don’t know about our culture and they can’t speak the filipino language, yet they think they can dictate what filipinos should identify as. They are internalized racists, they want to rid their Asian heritage in order to fit in with the white people more
Are Filipinos asians? Girl in the back: mexican 😂😂😂 i died reminds me of my friend who is Japanese and white but grew up in a Filipino household hold because she's adopted sent me a tik tok that said Filipinos are the Hispanics of Asia and honestly ot had me rolling🤣🤣
Well, Philippines is considered the Hispanic country of Asia 😂 Historically & culturally. The term Hispanic broadly refers to the nations, people, and cultures that have a historical link to Spain. Edit: just search it. Google is free. Don't be ignorant.
have you been to mexico? even the people there they have this distinct feature look that is not so Latino looks, 70 - 80% of the people are from Mayan or Aztec ancestry which is very similar facial look to Austronesian and Polynesian which we are Filipinos today, meanwhile the rest percentage most major cities have half breed or we called Latina beauty
But according to some archeologist filipinos are pacific islanders, asians, and hispanic as well but in modern days it was classified as southeast asians
@dek heay In their research they said that the phil before was inhabited by former polynesians as well thus adding it into philippine diversity similar to papua and most eastern part of asia unlike japan they didnt came across to these ppl and came closer to eastern asians and malaysia and indonesia are from indo or austrenasian origin. They only refer these features as historical background but as time goes by phil is a southeast asian in pacific islander and hospanic origin only
@dek heay oh what i mean by the polynesians is that the ppl their went and thrive to eastern parts of the philippines sorry to misuse the word 'former'😂 Also what i mean by the hispanic and pacific islander are just origins of the philippines but i didnt say philippines is currently hispanic nor pacific islander because phil is southeast asian nation
The fuck is pacific islander??? I've never heard of that term until like 2 years ago. The Philippines is in Asia, just like Japan and Indonesia. Filipinos are Asian. I really don't see why we have to be so specific on locations.
REAL Pacific Islanders are from places like Samoa, Fiji, Hawai'i, New Zealand, and Tahiti. They probably laugh whenever Filipinos try to claim to be Pacific Islanders.
Filipinos are Pacific Islander because the base stock of their racial make up is Austronesian (Malayo and Negrito) which belongs to the same family as peoples from Oceanía and reaching as far as similarities in language with Hawaii.
kATTACKlysm the original name of the philippines are not philippines. it was MAHARLIKA ... it has been changed when the spaniards come to our land?? if the spain didn't come to our land it's still exist. tapos hinde nayon maging philippines.. tatawagin yon sa pangalang maharlika... the lost kingdom of the philippines?
xKlyzm i think you got that wrong first Spain captured but then we rebelled and had a dictator but he got overthrown and that's when we were taken over by Japan in ww2
Historically Phillilipines were under Sri Wijaya Empire ( Confed City States of South East Asia Kingdoms ) and had Malayan kingdoms before the spanish conquest. The Empire had close ties with Tang Empire ( China). The phillipines have been known to the world unlike the pacific islanders which are sea nomadic people and are not known to be be parts of empire of have big or maritime kingdoms. The Name Visayas islands (whose people and region is named after the empire). Phillipines have been part of maritime civilization for thousand of years. The discoveries of Laguna Copperplate and the Golden Tara (picture above) are evidence that the Philippines is much closer to Asian countries. More than what ignorant people would like you to believe. The presence of Golden Tara and the use of Hindu date also show that Buddhism and Hinduism were introduced in the country a few centuries after it was introduced to Japan. The copperplate also is an evidence of high level of cultural identity of ancient Filipinos. The fact that it was written in a foreign letter using both Tagalog and Foreign languages show that high level of literacy of the people and our kinship with the rest of Malay speaking world. Pacific Islands are places like Samoa, Hawaii, Tahiti, Guam, Cook Islands, Mariana Islands-and their common denominator? Most of them do not possess their own national and political identities-they are islands under the jurisdiction and protection of more powerful countries like USA, France and New Zealand. Most of these Pacific Islands are still referred to as “indigenous natives.” They have very, very small populations and they have no global role or power. Compore these with the Phillipines where ancient empire and kingdoms have thrived for thousand of years much like any kingdoms or empires.. Equalling Phillipines to pacific islander is as saying that the Phillipines are small, nomadic and have no history and power. ancient Filipinos have concept of money and has long been trading with the rest of Asia. From Ryukyu Kingdom in Japan, to China, to as far as Arabia..... Ming Dynasty court records The next historical reference to Ancient Tondo can be found in the Ming Shilu Annals (明实录]),[12] which record the arrival of an envoy from Luzon to the Ming Dynasty (大明朝) in 1373.[12] Her rulers, based in their capital, Tondo (Chinese: 東都; pinyin: dōngdū) were acknowledged not as mere chieftains, but as kings (王).[33] This reference places Tondo into the larger context of Chinese trade with the aboriginals[contentious label] of the Philippine archipelago. Theories such as Wilhelm Solheim's Nusantao Maritime Trading and Communication Network (NMTCN) suggest that cultural links between what are now China and the nations of Southeast Asia, including what is now the Philippines, date back to the peopling of these lands.[34] But the earliest archeological evidence of trade between the Philippine aborigines and China takes the form of pottery and porcelain pieces dated to the Tang and Song dynasties.
Non Chalant no offense I would get how some white looking people might be ashamed to admit they are Asian but Filipino people? Identifying as Pacific Islanders? What is the prestige in being a Pacific Islander? At least Asians have bad AND good stereotypes. Pacific Islanders are invisible.
aoko sakano EAST Asians carry good and bad stereotypes. India is in Asia... Therefore they are technically Asian. Do Westerners consider Indians and the Japanese to be the same? No, they don’t. Japan is commonly thought of as a high-tech, economically robust, culturally rich society. On the other hand, India is thought of as a country that struggles to maintain public hygiene and does nothing but tech support. Filipinos cannot use the “Asian” name to compensate for the country’s massive poverty and numerous social ills.
神だ youre everywhere bringing down filos tell me did a filipina reject you ? Also we can use the asian name because simply we are asians. whats wrong with you you racist fuck

Sure Pacific Islanders are descendants of a much earlier Asian sub group which Filipinos are also descended from. But they've evolved beyond the genetics of their ancestors. So did the modern Filipinos. The Filipinos retained the traits of the said ancestor, while the Pacific islanders evolved into 2 ethnic enclaves: The Melanesian, dark skin, generally small built with curly hair thats sometimes blonde. They are the most The Malayo/Polynesian, brown skin, brown eyes, largely built or tall and slender. They have have distinct features such as hooked nose for the eastern and southern Malayo/Polynesian(Tahitians, Cook Islanders, Easter Islanders, and Maori), small Asiatic eyes(Samoans, Kiribatese, Marshallese, Pohnpeian), thick curly hair(Hawaiians), and rarest of them all, red hair(Hawaiians, Tahitians, sometimes Kiribatese).
Many young filipinos are the most ignorant as well. Note, the term "many". Not all. I'm just speaking from experience and the things I've heard and seen. By the way, filipinos don't have the largest eyes. That would go to the Indians.
Majority of Pacific Islanders are actually descendants of the Austronesians. Pacific Islanders are related to the Malays, Indonesians, Filipinos, etc. but the connection is already pretty far that Pacific Islanders have grown distinct from their ancestors. Malays and Indonesians are the Islamicized Austronesians, Filipinos are the Hispanicized and Americanized Austronesians, while the Pacific Islanders are those who kept their seafaring Austronesian roots.
Not all modern filipinos have spanish or american blood. the history of colonization is incredible recent compared to mexico, with a highly mixed indigneous / colonist population
@@ProudSone my great grandpa actually was 100% filipino - my dna test shows up 14% filipino even 2 generations from him. he definitely wasn't spanish blood -- just because you think you can make guesses based on history doesn't mean that's how it truly is. And he wasn't from an indigenous community or poor. If you look at places spain has colonized, most "mestizo" people actually have more than half indigenous blood -- and indigenous languages like nahuatl and ilocano are still major languages in their respective countries. you research is very incomplete - almost dogmatic.
Filipinos are 36% East Asian (Chinese) and 63% South East Asian Malay, source: courtesy of national geographic’s gene testing of 80,000 Filipinos which is a scientifically proven method to give an overall estimate of the populations genes while Pacific Islanders are mixed with austronesian and Papuan African black blood and have a different culture.
Filipinos have no Spanish bloodlines nor Indian bloodlines? U are a pure KooK! Also, Malays have direct African bloodlines and as well Indonesians moreso. Do your gene testing away from the financial and banking districts

Nope Filipinos are not Pacific Islanders. Besides, if you ever go to a luaua types of polynesian hula dancing, music, stories do NOT have Filipino culture in them. 1.The Philippines is an island nation that is not connected to the main Asian continent. 2.The country sits in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, in close proximity to other Pacific Island nations like Fiji, Guam, and the countries of Polynesia. 3.Its tropical weather is very similar to the rest of the Pacific Island nations. 4.The Philippines uses the Latin alphabet (ABCDE) , unlike other Asian countries which use logographics like kanji, hanja and hangul (漢字). 5.Most important of all, unlike their Asian counterparts in China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam, the Filipinos do not use chopsticks. They use silverware or eat with their hands.
You guys don't read or know anything about your roots or what? Filipinos are Austronesian regardless if the American definition says we're Pacific Islanders or not. Austronesian people have shared/overlapping culture and heritage. And to the "actual Pacific Islander" guy(I bet you're mostly white), we're not trying to be Polynesian, there are other categories like Melanesian, Micronesian and Malay(SE-Asian archipelago and includes Malagasy people). S Lee Let’s end this “Filipinos are Pacific Islanders and not Asian” once and for all.
+Kampilan dela Cruz Philippines is south east asia, most arab countries are in middle east asia, india is in south asia, and siberia is north asia. what do you mean informally calling Asians refer to chinese? that's just, for a lack of a better term (im sorry) ignorance.
SamuraiMover Ignorance? What if I call you Asian? Other people will call you chinese technically but the truth is you're Indian. Generalize. Asian mean chinese informally. You're the IGNORANT.
Ok. Fine. Next time go out your parents basement. Internet is not always reliable source of truth. If you saw an Arab guy wearing weird outfit, are you going to call him an "Asian" instead of Arab guy? Asian will refer to Oriental people with slant eyes and yellowish skin technically. I'd better to call me a Pacific Islander to differentiate from chinese race generally.
Nobody in the Philippines say's they are a pacific islander. They are SOUTHEAST asian.
Genetically, we are Asians. Culturally, we are Pacific Islanders. Us being called Asians is fairly recent and I don't know if this is true but a few south-east Asian nations will be identified as Pacific islanders in 2020
Culturally LMFAO LMFAO A BIG OL LAUGH FOR THIS SHIT
Rek, what makes the philippines explicitly Pacific Islander when it comes to culture? Please tell me because I've been Filipino for years and I've never once felt like my culture is in any way identical to people in Hawaii, Polynesia, Guam, etc. If anything, Filipino culture is more related to Malaysians and Indonesia than anything. The only difference is our foreign influences were Spanish and American as opposed to British and Arab.
Jason Rittle You’re exactly right, they are not Pacific Islanders...
Rek If Filipinos are Pacific islanders then so are Malaysians and Indonesians lmao.
As well as the country of Nauru belongs to pacific islander
@Nadia FACTS
@Nadia well if thats the case then filipinos are not a pacific islanders because filipinos are part of a austronesian

We have a saying here: those who do not hold on to our ways are worse than the smell of fishkill.
hey brother! we still here!!
I'm a Filipino and I (and actually most Filipinos) don't even have the Pacific Islander identity up for debate because they're not even aware of that. Most will simply say they're Filipinos, or if they're trying to be more inclusive, they'll just say they're Southeast Asians.
Indonesian are mixed with Indian and carry Indian names. Shamed? by what?
only Fil-Ams call themselves Pacific islanders. Philipine-born Filipinos know we are asians.
Roselyn Reyes ...I’m Philippine born Filipino, but culturally I believe we are a bit more on islander but that’s a personal view I guess 🤷🏻♀️
harambee I’m from cebu, the middle island :) through the long course of history and many descendants of voyagers, Malay, for some reason, I feel a lot closer to the word islander since we are an island in the pacific, living similar lifestyles in the tropics. But like I said, I think it’s more of a personal preference :)
roze street coz they are corrupted by ignorant Americans who thinks chinese are the only asians
because most of us filipinos don't even know what a pacific islander is
helldeirch philippines is more connected to most Asian lands than those pacific islands. Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia all the way to Taiwan used to be connected with land bridges. Philippines is separated by mariana trench from those pacific islands.
We're Asians AF. Filipinos living in the Philippines never consider ourselves as Pacific Islanders.
Kyutie Pie Sure, there are some commonalities even as far as Madagascar based on archaeological facts. But when it comes to identification, we Filipinos are not really confused whether we are considered as Asians or not.
But...... were........Asians........
Yup. It's only the Filipino Americans who have this self issue with themselves. It's because Asians are stereotyped so much that is' not appealing to be Asian so Filipinos want to stray as far away as possible to being Asian. It's sad really.
I didn't even know there was a Pacific islander thing
in southern California they consider themselves Pacific islanders.
I'm a Filipino who grew up in New Zealand. If I ever told my Tongan and Samoan friends that I'm a Pacific Islander, it wouldn't take them 2 seconds to say "f*** are you on about, bro"

Rayanna zabini Lol way to be VERY disingenuous with your responses.
Yeah, but the culture is very different then the stereotypical Asian. Why are you named after a Persian King? Just wondering...
Nathan Au The culture of India is very different than the culture of South Korea, but that has shit all to do with being Asian.

Asian. Philippines is in Asia. Southeast Asia to be exact.
Unknown Person nah, East Asia has similar looking alphabets in their language and their eyes are more slanted due to evolving from the cold temp

You're talking INDIGENOUS Australoids! They look IDENTICAL TO Africans. The mongoloid people do not share the same roots.

Still the same root, Tagalog is an Austronesian language and Filipinos look more Malaysian/Indonesian than Pacific Islander. Their culture is probably more similar to Pacific Islanders' because of Christianity (both regions believe in the same region). But Filipinos still remain part of 'Nusantara'. 'Serumpun'.
We are Asian, not Pacific islanders... Its kind of sad when you don't know your own identity
For those people that consider themselves Pacific Islanders: let me just leave this here: Pacific Islanders:
*Polynesian Islands* cook island, Easter island/Rapa Nui, French Polynesia, Hawaii, Midway island, New Zealand/Aotearoa, Niue, Norfolk Island, Pitcairn Islands, American Samoa, Samoa, Tahiti, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Rotuma.

Next time, ask a mainland Filipino, one that knows how to freaking speak the language, one that has grown on the country, one that has experienced the country's culture for him/herself--ask him/her on what his/her ethnicity is. You'd be freaking surprised on the freaking consensus.
Pacific Islanders = Polynesians + Melanesians + Micronesians. Yes Philippines is made of islands in the Pacific but so is Japan.
Hyumanggis Fatsou are they in the regions of Polynesia, Melanesia or Micronesia? No, so you're asian
Let’s end this “Filipinos are Pacific Islanders and not Asian” once and for all. First of all, Filipinos ARE ASIAN.
The difference is that Polynesians are a mixture of Lapita and Papuan. The Papuans have been in the Pacific alot longer than Austronesians. Polynesians developed their own cultures, thus do not consider themselves as Asians.
I'm Hmong, my friend is Filipina, another friend is Khmer..... we're all Asians, we do the same things, eat the same things, go out and do the same things. LOL All my Filipino friends consider themselves Asian, so I don't know what's the big deal here.

What the...? We are Asians! The Philippines is in ASIA, hence... Me as a Filipino i dont want to called me diabetic samoans or any Polynesians who lived in any diabetic islands in on the pacific but don't represent your culture unique to us.. We have your culture long time ago and you are just ruining our culture with other cultures
I agree
Bruh! We’re member of the ASEAN(Association of SouthEast Asian Nation) So clearly we’re asian! Haha! And to that guy who said it’s because Philippines is an island on Pacific Ocean, bruh so does Japan Taiwan is on Pacific Ocean. Lol
GiMich lol😂🤪🤣
Lol. I could be.
I lived in the US for some time and all my documents they have written says im a pacific islander.
Good to have you on are team! From Vietnam 🇻🇳
On point
Sincerely,
A Filipino American who considers himself as Asian while embracing all things American
Dookie Fresh RESPECT THIS COMMENT
We're southeast asians
What? what country you are from pacific islander? I am micronesian , I considered filipinos as pacific islanders.
You are not a pacific islander, dont be a wannabe
Unless the Philippines is located in Europe then that's called a European country, why debate about it when in fact it really is located in Asia. Foolish senses!!!
Great point
Nonsense vid I feel like I lost my time watching dis shit..
Right we don’t call the uk and Ireland as an Atlantic Ocean country like Iceland etc....
We're not Pacific Islanders, we're jungle Asians, lol.
ALI WONG! Lmao
True that. :)

Noooooo. Filipinos are Pacific Islanders.
for those who think the Philippines is considered pacific islander... does that make a country like Japan pacific islander as well? it is a island in the pacific
I have never even called myself a pacific islander
Me too tf i can't👉👈
I didn’t even know who the pacific islanders were until Moana came out, that’s when I decided to learn more about the islands. Amerikanong hilaw sila, they don’t know about our culture and they can’t speak the filipino language, yet they think they can dictate what filipinos should identify as. They are internalized racists, they want to rid their Asian heritage in order to fit in with the white people more
Same. I’m a full Filipino born in America and I don’t even consider myself a Pacific Islander. I know I’m an Asian
I'm so sure Filipinos are asian. Pacific Islands has notable Filipino population like Palau, Guam, Marianas etc. They are everywhere.
They only refer these features as historical background but as time goes by phil is a southeast asian in pacific islander and hospanic origin only
@dek heay oh what i mean by the polynesians is that the ppl their went and thrive to eastern parts of the philippines sorry to misuse the word 'former'😂
Also what i mean by the hispanic and pacific islander are just origins of the philippines but i didnt say philippines is currently hispanic nor pacific islander because phil is southeast asian nation
Filipinismo dude youre over doing it...stop being so smart...filipinos are asians...its basic elementary..even in pre school

xKlyzm i think you got that wrong first Spain captured but then we rebelled and had a dictator but he got overthrown and that's when we were taken over by Japan in ww2

Ming Dynasty court records
The next historical reference to Ancient Tondo can be found in the Ming Shilu Annals (明实录]),[12] which record the arrival of an envoy from Luzon to the Ming Dynasty (大明朝) in 1373.[12] Her rulers, based in their capital, Tondo (Chinese: 東都; pinyin: dōngdū) were acknowledged not as mere chieftains, but as kings (王).[33] This reference places Tondo into the larger context of Chinese trade with the aboriginals[contentious label] of the Philippine archipelago.

Pacific Islanders are invisible.
aoko sakano
EAST Asians carry good and bad stereotypes.

The Filipinos retained the traits of the said ancestor, while the Pacific islanders evolved into 2 ethnic enclaves:
The Melanesian, dark skin, generally small built with curly hair thats sometimes blonde. They are the most
The Malayo/Polynesian, brown skin, brown eyes, largely built or tall and slender.
😂
indians and arabs
The Marko Polo Program yup
They mean larger than chinese, korean , Japanese...
Hahaha yah indian pala..
@TJ Reggae if you have common sense, you'll get what he mean with 'Austronesian'

Not all modern filipinos have spanish or american blood. the history of colonization is incredible recent compared to mexico, with a highly mixed indigneous / colonist population
@@ProudSone not really. Only about 2-3% are only spanish decent left in the philippines

Nope Filipinos are not Pacific Islanders. Besides, if you ever go to a luaua types of polynesian hula dancing, music, stories do NOT have Filipino culture in them.
I do not understand why some want to claim polynesian ancestry when they are not. It is similar to some white or black people who claim to have a great grandmother who was a Cherokee princess.
Just be happy where you come from.
As an actual Pacific Islander (Samoan and Maori) Filipino's are Asian asf they ain't 1 of us.
Start with this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outrigger_canoe
Next time don't be so opinionated when you're uneducated on the subject. You embarrass yourself.
S Lee Let’s end this “Filipinos are Pacific Islanders and not Asian” once and for all.
