First Walk of 2020 - Beyond King Harold's Tomb (4K)

- My first walk of 2020, and it seemed apt to start the new decade at the tomb of King Harold at Waltham Abbey. The aim of the walk was to climb a ridge of high land near Monkham's Hall that I've looked at many times. A comment on a previous video mentioned a First World War anti-aircraft gun emplacement on the hill near Kennel Wood - so that's where I headed. A truly magnificent start to the new year and the new decade.

Born and bred in in Bristol Road E7 and left there in 1982. Your walks take me back like a sense of going home. The hours and hours I spent as a kid in the 50's on Wanstead Flats and in Epping forest was magical. Your walks bring back the same magic. More power to your elbow my friend and thank you so much for your great delivery and wonderful observations.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful walk with us particularly poignant for me as my Mum came from 'The Abbey' and sadly she died four years ago this month at the good old age of 96! Mum never lost her love of the place especially the Abbey Church and surrounds. I can remember walking there with her as a child back in the sixties, before the ring road, when you simply walked down beside the church along the river, visiting 'Harolds's Bridge' en route and out into the watermeadows below......... where she told tales of playing as a child and picking 'milk maids' ..............
According to my Mother the green space/gardens beside/behind the Abbey Church were used for growing watercress and used to supply 'half of London' back in the eighteen and early nineteen hundreds!
Have just checked via Google Books and 'The Saturday Magazine' volume 14/15 six acres 'are occupied by watercress'. Who knew?

Wonderful John. So many of your walks are places where I have lived and explored myself. I used to live a bit to the east of Galleywood Hill. I used to like walking up to that viewpoint. Another fantastic view overlooking the Lea Valley is just West of Gillwell Park, a short walk from Chingford Station.

I love the way you "hymn" the River Lea. I was born at the Luton and Dunstable Hosptal just up the road from the source of the River Lea so I feel a particlar connection to it

Thanks John, another great walk. As you say, a delightful way to start the new year/decade. Just thought you might like to know, although I own a kindle copy of This Other London and I have bought several paperback copies for friends, mostly living in London, I have never owned a physical copy of it. Last Saturday whilst browsing in WH Smith in Blyth, Northumberland I came across a hardback edition in the remainder bin for £2! I ‘m not sure if this is good for you, but for me it has made my week (at least).

The perfect video to finish a day
How lovely to see that view again, I stumbled across it on one of my rambles up there. Amazing view. Feels rural. I especially enjoyed it as I’m stuck in the Royal Free recovering from op, been in bed two weeks itching to walk again. Wonderful medicine walking.... MICHAEL (Jean) Stride

They managed to build a bad looking house just next to the abbey. Sad. Nice video. I find your videos very melancholic but engaging. I find London rather ugly (apart from certain areas/spots) but it is true there is a lot to discover and it is always nice and exciting getting lost in this big city. The London you show is the real London. I like the way you love it for what it is. Great work!

Talk of the Blue Streak missile makes me think you should head up my way - I'm a few minutes walk away from Aston (Stevenage), which was the site of Aston House. Became a research facility for the Special Operations Executive, the commanding officer was a contender for the inspiration of Ian Fleming's "Q". And it lies just off the River Beane, a tributary of the sacred River Lea.

Hello John, nice to see you again.....
("The Discovery of our Holy Cross") or "Waltham Chronicle", relates that, in about 1016, the blacksmith at another estate belonging to Tovi, at Montacute near Glastonbury, found a large black flint (or marble) crucifix buried at the top of a hill, after a dream. Tovi had the cross loaded onto an ox-cart, but the oxen would only go in one direction and continued every day until they reached Waltham, a journey of some 150 miles. This Holy Rood or Cross was installed at the church and soon became the subject of pilgrimage. Tovi is said to have rebuilt the church, but modern evidence suggests that he probably retained the 8th-century fabric of the building.

Aviation has developed quite significantly during WWI, so by the end of it the planes were quite advanced and Zepelins were rare

It really was a magical walk- and video. I know those paths well- the views from that trig point are indeed stupendous And yes, the Greenwich Meridian Trail goes across that field before meeting the Lea. One thing that is intriguing me is- how muddy was it? I did my first walk of 2020 on 7 January through Ruislip Woods- it was six miles of ankle deep mud!

Another enjoyable walk John. Glass of wine and a John Rogers You Tube documentary on a Sunday night. What could be better? Have you discovered the alternative description on the death of Harald in that he survived his wounds sustained at the battle of Hastings and continued his life whilst eventually living in the Hermitage in the City of Chester for seven years before he died? It is alleged that the Canons of Waltham were deceived as to the identity of the body buried at Waltham Abbey.
