What a superb instructional video. Minimum words so can be followed by anyone. Even going to the trouble of stripping down one side just to show us the workings, brilliant. I hope my Sprinter fixes so easily. UPDATE : Saw the video 4 days ago and adjusted my Sprinter hand brake today, and the hardest part was jacking it up, the adjustment was easy. Thanks so much for posting.
@bikermickyc Thats a brilliant result, and exactly what this video was made for... Its not difficult, and you don't need to remove the drum, just one bolt. I only took the drum off to show the workings, so you know where to poke your screwdriver. Im glad you got some satisfaction from watching this. You just made my day. Thanks, and happy motoring... Paul :-)
Great video...amazing Mercedes engineering..having a separate systems..disc for braking and internal expanding for emergency brakes..thanks for the easy to follow adjustment tutorial
And thank you for a great piece of feedback. My aim was simple when I made this. I worked on the Mr Bean principle in that actions can say more than words ever can, therefore understood by many different speaking countries. Thank you.
Brilliant, i ended up changing the rear brakes and drums just from watching this video and changed all filters from your other video, many thanks for your time,
I do not own a Sprinter, but, searching for information about this vehicle was redirected here. EXCELENT way of explaining things... thanks sir!!!!!!!!!
mandrakemdp Thank you for such a nice comment. As an owner/Driver on a tight budget, doing simple jobs like these and saving some money is an important task done. I knew there would be other people around the world in a similar situation, hence this video was born where actions speak louder than words overcoming any language barriers. I'm glad you found it helpful. Thank you for your feedback.
Totally agree Sir!, actions speak more than words (in fact, I linked the thumbs up gestures in various moments of the whole video and the tea time, definetly done with passion!!!!!). Hope to have a sprinter someday and I'll be bothering again asking for minor repairs like this ;). Have a great day sir!!!!. Greetings from Argentina!!!
Thanks for such nice feedback, I always appreciate good comments. I made this video for all the Sprinter owners who must have a dodgy handbrake and are not quite sure how to fix it. Garage costs are very expensive, hence the birth of this film. It all works on the theory, "A Picture is worth a thousand words" Showing words is easy, you must toy around with your editing software to find out how... Wish my van had your mileage !! 280k miles now on mine... Thanks for the sub. Paul :-)
Well made video, very easy to follow and understand I didn't know about the hand brake shoes till this video I can get my disc off now:-) Excellent! Thank you very much
super video, simple, no bla bla, just show i anderstand, 2 clics, remove one bolt and find dial , adjust +/-, 4 clics must be parking brake. thank you very much
@foundationgood So glad you found it helpful, that was my whole intention when I made this film, makes you feel good when you accomplish something yourself and maybe saved a packet in the process, Its not difficult to do, a little fidddly maybe and some patience is needed, but well worth the effort. Good on you Chris :-)
Bevoin1970, Thank you, great video I learn how to adjust my Dodge Caravan 2002 emergency brake from your video. Although the vehicle is different but the same method that you show in the video. Once again thank you so much.
Just bought 10 alphabet books on behalf of you for helping me out with the vid. The books will go to Liberia, Uganda or Sierra Leone (whichever needs them most atm.). The message I sent to the charity organization: "On behalf of Bevoin1970 for helping me out!"
Thanks for the video. I'll be doing this very soon. Handbrake almost doesn't do anything anymore. 308 2000reg sprinter. I just done my brake pads this week. Wish I watched this sooner as I had the wheels off and brakes off already....
Your seance of humor cracks me up, LOL You remind me of myself in many ways. The nonchalant manner in which you showed us you injured knuckes gave me a laugh. I Occasionally do the same job on my cars, but I would be quite reluctant to jack under the rear end like that. I've never seen brake drums like those but If I run in to any now I will know how to do it. Good Video 5*
I've never made one on the subject, but the mechanic that does mine, only takes around 30 mins to do both front wheels, thats how easy it is. You may need to grind away the lip that forms on the disc with an angle grinder, and you'll need to push the Piston back with whatever does the trick before you can squeeze in your new pads, but it really is very easy.I did my own last year. Once you remove the wheel, you can see better what is involved. Same as rear on the old shape Sprinter THX
@Theoscense1 Thank you, I get lots of love for this video from Sprinter owners who are a little frightened maybe of doing this job. Its not so difficult, any one can do it with a little patience and understanding. Many thanks Javier - Happy new year. :-)
I just bought a 2003 311cdi Your videos helped me do all the work myself, also had black death problem, I fixed it myself too :) the problem was the copper washer was like a the ohms symbol Ω lol leaking out the combustion gas. So it was an easy fix... thank God She is running lovely now. Im curious is that your new van in your other video? Do you prefer the newer model to the old? less or more faults? cheers
MadAm Glad to be of assistance to you. Yes thats my latest Sprinter and yes I most definitely prefer that model to my previous model. They just improved in so many areas. :-)
@Bevoin1970 Not only did my van pass the inspection with the help of this video, it did it with flying colours. Almost perfect balance between left and right brake and I saved about 100€ compared to taking the car to a shop. Merry christmas! I will make a donation to help the misfortunate of the world on behalf of you to keep the good thing going on. :)
Thanks. I always try to put myself in the position of someone who has never done this job before, but would like to attempt it for the first time. If I've taken some of the mystery out of it and saved another owner / driver a few quid, that's good enough for me...
That's awesome :) Just failed a WOF as the handbrake isn't even on each side. I would love to try this myself, but I'm no mechanic but helps understand what's involved and work out what sort of cost may be involved now. Thanks
failed MOT today. >rear brake application uneven >rear brakes release unevenly >Brake load sensing valve siezed (brake compensator) the compensator is by the rear axle and has a long and large spring. it balances the braking on the rear wheels. quite a simple and quick job little messy though, ( brake fluid ) and you need a fair bit of Brake fluid to refill and bleed the brakes. , release the 8mm lock nut, undo the 13mm nut an inch, flick the hook spring off, undo two bolts and four brake line nuts (two fluid in and two fluid out) . Had to re-adjust the hand brake too. this video is the nuts. cheers.
Well done you for having a go, it's not so bad is it? I admit it can be a tad fiddly getting both wheels the same and not being able to see where your poking the screwdriver blade, all done by feel, but its worth doing because you know you've done it all yourself, a great feeling. Glad to be of assistance. Thanks for watching, Good luck in the MOT
He does have the vehicle blocks on but I noticed they were not placed right if you watch the video again it shows in the beginning of the the video, the blocks should be placed the other way around. But the guy did a great job on the video I love it.
+Harbans Dhatt There was a reason I did the wheel chocks that way round. The road I was working on slopes downhill slightly, there was a danger the front wheels would ride up and over the top of the blocks had I turned them round the correct way. The way I had those blocks meant the front tyres "Bit" into the sharp edge of the wooden block and stopped rolling immediately. Thanks for the comment. :-)
Brilliant video just the info i have been looking for i have an 03 sprinter that seems to have the parking brake sticking on and the handbrake lever has no tension on it for the first 2-3 clicks will adjusting like this solve the problem.
@tucfinland Now the fact you saved around 100 euros is music to my ears, thats what its all about, keeping owner/driver costs down. Im pleased that your pleased. You just made my Christmas... ha ha Hope 2012 goes just as well for you. Merry Christmas. :-)
Thanks I replaced the shoes in the summer with some help from a friend and cleaned all the adjuster and the small spring that is on it, will have to take the drum off sometime where do I apply copper grease is it applied to the back of the pins that hold the assembly to the drum, I have some I was given but have never used it as not sure where to apply it also where do you apply it on brake pads I know how to change them they are alot easier to me than drum brakes. Thanks Ian
Dear Bevoin, your tutorial is very useful. Thanks for your sympathy. Too bad for the finger !!! I hope you did disinfected for good! My best wishes for your business and health!
Hi mate, I've just done this but with slightly different method for the first time in order to remove old rotors. Upon finishing the job I seem to have a whine of some sort that sounds like the noise you get when you run your finger around a crystal glass. Is this the sound of the new discs and pads breaking in? Or have I not adjusted handbrake quite enough when refitting? I tightened the cog until the disc wouldn't move in my hand and then loosened it just a small amount until the disc moved again.
The torque for the caliper bolts = 80Nm and 180Nm for the wheel bolts. I know almost every screw on the Sprinter. I made 3.5 years for an apprenticeship as an auto mechanic. This company had about 15 sprinters, 14 VW Transporter, 6 Ford Transit, 2 Fiat Ducato and many other cars. If you have questions about the Sprinter, talk to me
Thank you. I imagine people who don't speak english watching this film, therefore actions speak louder than words in my view.
What a superb instructional video. Minimum words so can be followed by anyone. Even going to the trouble of stripping down one side just to show us the workings, brilliant. I hope my Sprinter fixes so easily.

Cool video without unnecessary talking. Thanks for the help .

Excellent! Amazingly clear and bright.
Brilliant, i ended up changing the rear brakes and drums just from watching this video and changed all filters from your other video, many thanks for your time,
Great video. Just actually took me less time to adjust my sprinter than it took to watch the video.
I do not own a Sprinter, but, searching for information about this vehicle was redirected here. EXCELENT way of explaining things... thanks sir!!!!!!!!!

I love the M4 noise and the jangly music 😊, go somewhere quieter and talk through it
