You gave such a clear and easy to understand explanation of the business analysis process! More videos relating to that in the future please! And also tips you’ve picked up along the way (similar to the “why I use google sheets” comment you made down below)
I never in my life thought i would be a business analyst. I always watched your videos and liked your profession, and out of nowhere I'm promoted as Business Analyst in my office.. made me realise you legit attract things
I've always wondered if the role of a Data Analyst the same as a Business Analyst? Because I've compared the job descriptions of both roles and they're identical. Would greatly appreciate if anyone could clarify this. Thank you!
Liliian, thank you so much for making this series and putting so much effort into it.I love how you explain what you're doing with so much detail to help us have the closest possible understanding of what a day in your life looks like. Many other vloggers kinda just sit around and show themselves typing and doesn't explain much which is understandable, but not very interesting to watch and or informative. Just wanted to let you know how much your effort is appreciated :)
Lilian, Thank you so much for these insightful videos on business analysis career. I am currently doing a masters in business analysis and consulting, your videos get me excited to be in the analytics corporate world after graduation (PS: your channel is the only one that keeps motivating me to carry on and enjoy what i do) Good job!!
What a great video Lillian! I am from Vietnam and it's great to hear that you used to live in Vietnam. I am also interested in business and data analytics and I hope to work like what you are doing right now. I am actively seeking for full-time job after graduation, and your video is recommended to me, which is soooo helpful!
Just like everyone said. Lillian, you're the best at explaining how a business analyst works, especially when you explain your business analysis workflow at 1:51 and how is your thinking / analytical process to raise above the data and numbers to get the business insights at 5:53. I'm motivated to learn more about business analysis. Hope one day I can be a business analyst myself at an international company as you are.
Great video. I do the same thing for my job. Alot of queries and data analysis via excel into graphs. I think it's awesome how different roles business analysts are for different companies.
This is really interesting and gives me a greater appreciation of the Business Analyst role! You are also very engaging and can easily explain analytics!
A new subscriber :) I am currently in my first semester at university and wish to be a business analyst in future. I don’t know what exactly a business analyst does, but watching your videos makes me understand more about it. I feel like I would enjoy this role and I wish I can have a career like yours. Seeing you as a role model now!
thank you celine! glad this was helpful. i think what i love the most about being a business analyst is that i get to work on so many different types of projects with all types of teams. i like the 'generalist' role aspect of it as opposed to a 'specialist' role. my manager used to call us ninjas and i love that
Hey! Hi from Montreal, and also as fellow Taiwanese :) Way to go on starting your career at Spotify! Your video resonates a lot with my own experience working as a BI and Analytics analyst. Keep up the good work! Look forward to your new contents
At first, I was inspired by your video about business field but just knew you grow up in Vietnam which makes me love to watch you more (i’m from Vietnam btw)
Thank you for taking the time to explain a bit about your BA workflow and tools used! The visual and talking through the process is so helpful & interesting :)
Hey! Nice to bump into your channel. So I'm a Vietnamese, but currently living and working in Taiwan so I feelllll so related when you mentioned about Taiwan Vietnam eventho it's not really related 😂 I had a good time watching your video, have a good time, take care and 新年快樂 🍾️
loved both of your day in a life videos - I'm inspired to make some of my own! I've been taking a year break to do my own things so your videos are making me miss working with other people. (also your cooking looks amazing!)
As a local Taiwanese, I learn a lot of interesting English(of ingredients) and some knowledge about business analysis from this video! Also your video looks so cozy and motivated at the same time! Happy belated Lunar new year~
Really good video. I'm currently pursuing my masters in Business Information Systems and this video has clarify more about what a Business Analyst day to day look like.
i am so glad i found ur channel. i develop interest in BA not long ago, i am a mathematics student currently and hopefully i can get to work as a business analyst by the end, also currently learn SQL and other data related applications. you make the career look so cool
I’m a BI analyst, but i just started out(aka junior). The thing about being a junior is i dont really have structure set yet on my “workflow process” and i think im always not doing something enough, but seeing your workflow, im 98% sure im subconsciously doing that already, and feel a bit better now😆 Thank you for the chill video and well explained process!🌟
Hi there I was wondering when you were looking for a job in business Analyst what were some of the difficulty you have faced and what was the whole journey
The youtube algorithm brought me here. I'm a Taiwanese working in data science related job, too. your video looks interesting and chill. Please take more video to let me understand the work in NY, and Spotify. =)
Thank you for sharing a real day in the life of a business analyst. It helps me to understand more about this role and makes me want to step in it :))) Could you share more details about how to prepare to become a business analyst and work portfolio?
Love this content, this feels different from the other day in my life vlogs that I see on yt. I mean you really gave us a view of what it's like wfh, only a few vloggers do this I think. And really appreciate how you explain to us the works or tasks of a business analyst. Can't wait to see more videos from you
This is what I call a typical 'soft' business analyst with a slice of data and financial analysis. There's not a lot of standardization for business analysts, I know some institutes are trying to standardize the practice and definition of a business analyst such as IIBA. I work in IT. IT business analysts do very, very different things. When I tell people that I am hiring IT business analysts, they automatically think of low pay but I tell them that I pay from $75-100/hour for IT BAs. For 'soft' business analysts, I can imagine $25-40/hour. I will tell you right now IT BAs do not provide profitability performance reports. Heck, I wouldn't know how to produce one if you asked... 'soft' business analysts can actually pivot into product management or work as a product owner because they look at the business side of things such as market trends, research, etc. assuming that they have strong presentation and communication skills.
Wow..this is real business analytics on display here. Cool...i am on the journey. Transiting to a Business Analytics role cos i have been a business analyst for software dev coy for a while. Stay blessed.
So awesome to find out you lived in Vietnam as well!!!!! That's a very lovely and gorgeous dress along with those MIU MIU heels!!!! Supporting all da way from Hong Kong here!!!!
Awesome video Lillian! I'm just curious why you do your data wrangling in google sheets rather than in SQL or Python? My guess is google sheets is something non-coding colleagues can understand what you're doing?
good question , and yes what you said for sure, and also mostly for efficiency because: 1. Usually when I write the queries I don't know what 'business insights' I will find, so that's why I get the rough cut of the metrics in SQL and then wrangle data/visualize them to uncover insights in google sheets. it's alot easier and more intuitive to do visualization in google sheets. 2. it minimizes having to write multiple sets of SQL queries. Most of the times stakeholders change their minds on what data they want to see after initial analysis. i.e they might want to look at different time range, a different country, etc. so instead of having to go back to SQL and re-do all the parameters, I can easily filter in google sheets via pivot table/ formulas. 3. I learned it from a data science manager that SQL queries should be as intuitive and 'clean' as possible so people can easily repurpose your queries when needed. so not wrangling and cutting too much of data in SQL allows me to simplify queries alot more. 4. lastly, like you said, doing wrangling/analysis is more user friendly in google sheets for non-tech folks to be able to play around with the data themselves and see the step-by-step of how the analysis is formed. at the same time, when other teams want to look at similar data, it's much easier for me to just send them the entire google sheets vs. having to build something from scratch for them. Hope that helps !
Great video! I'm still trying to figure out my career myself and business analysis is one of the roles I was curious about. Right now, I currently work customer service at an airport. I'm interested in pursuing the airline/aviation industry further. I have taken some SQL and Python classes. The tasks that I enjoy doing at work is interacting with passengers, discussing and analyzing their problem, and coming up with a solution. I'm not really into work where I'm behind a computer screen putting out code and algorithms. Coding and programming is just not my thing. Would a business analyst still be a good fit? Or should I find a different role? Thank you.
One thing to be careful of is that "business analyst" is a very broad title - some folks will be doing more data analysis like Lillian, whereas others embedded in a software team like me are doing more personal one on one interviews with end users to gather requirements, sketching out workflows, designing screens, and writing out specifications for the developers, and then testing out what they've produced against what our clients asked for and what I wanted them to do. These days, many companies will specifically ask for a "data analyst" if it's more data driven. But check the job description and see if they want more reporting and less gathering requirements to find out which way they want their business analyst to focus. I do have to know a lot of SQL since I'm identifying the queries the software will need to make (so the developers have an easier time and don't have to guess), and I have to understand how software is written, even if I'm not the one programming it myself. I also have to write out the user documentation on the other end. It's a lot of writing! I don't do any actual programming though, just every other part of the software development process that goes before and after it. My team uses Jasper reports, not Python, but a lot of the underlying principles are similar.
@@katarh This sounds very interesting! So is your title still "Business Analyst"? Looking at business analyst programs right now and this seems a lot more aligned with what I'd like to do! I
@@Sunnydya Yes! It's also what my certification is - I have the PMI- PBA, Professional Business Analyst certification. The test for that cert is all about gathering requirements and tracking them throughout a project's life cycle.
Hi Lilian, great video. Wanted to know what table you are using and is it a standing one or not. I am looking for a big table with variable heights All the best!
I would probably fall asleep if I had a job like yours 😴 I need more excitement than just looking at charts and emails all day. Still you’re really good at your job so congrats!
I work on transactions systems for a car manufacturing company. I do the similar with extracting data and presenting data. Simple pivot tables in excel surprisingly gives me a quick overview and analysis on what the issue is
Wow thank you this was so informative! :)) About how long does it take to finish creating the QBR and how much of that is past queries/dashboards you have? I also work as a data analyst and I feel like every day is so random and it's just like multiple stakeholders asking me for random datapulls and fixing broken things :( to the point where we can't focus on big picture stuff like this
Very nice sharing vlog! I'm also on a journey toward becoming a BA! Great to hear that you grew up in Vietnam, cuz I'm Vietnamese ^^ Looking forward to seeing your next videos :D
love your lifestyle videos! keep it up and you got a new subscriber because of the variety of your content and your energy :)) - also...I grew up in Vietnam too and currently abroad. it's interesting to see how you are living your life now!
Hey lillian, nice video! I love how you go into detail about your workflow. I'm a current M.S. in Business Analytics student and I'm looking to become a business analyst after graduation. I have a few questions regarding your general workflow and hope you could provide some insight: how many times a week do you create the analysis decks? Does your manager provide you with a scope as to what you are trying to find? Or do you have complete control over the data discovery part of the analysis process? Have you ever run out of ideas as to what your scope is or where to start the analysis?
hi! ofc-happy to help. answering your questions in order: -it depends on the scope of the analysis, but i'd say 1 major analysis and 3-5 small analyses per month. -not necessarily. my manager (and her manager) would usually come to me with high level/ambiguous business question, (i.e. why are we seeing user decline) and my job is to consolidate data-driven insights to help inform business strategies. they aren't involved in the data discovery, more on the 'so what' side of things. But after I send my analysis over, they will sometimes dig deeper or look at it from a diff pov . I personally love it bc that way I have the full autonomy on data but also get to learn how they leverage the data to drive biz decisions. -when i first started yes, alot of times i'd feel lost in how to 'start' the analysis, i rmbr i'd ask my manager how he/she would break down the problem. (i.e. what type of info should i look for to understand user decline?) and then based on that, I'd speak to data scientist and see how they'd go about crunching that data. I think this comes down to time & exp on the job - 1 year in i knew both the business and the data really well, so now when i get an 'ambiguous' question, i can break down the question, structure a framework, crunch the data, consolidate the insights. hope this helps and goodluck on your BA journey!
that's so cool to see someone go to international school in vietnam and working at such a big tech company! u make us proud! i went to international school in saigon (ssis)! where did you go?

-when i first started yes, alot of times i'd feel lost in how to 'start' the analysis, i rmbr i'd ask my manager how he/she would break down the problem. (i.e. what type of info should i look for to understand user decline?) and then based on that, I'd speak to data scientist and see how they'd go about crunching that data. I think this comes down to time & exp on the job - 1 year in i knew both the business and the data really well, so now when i get an 'ambiguous' question, i can break down the question, structure a framework, crunch the data, consolidate the insights.
hope this helps and goodluck on your BA journey!

Hi, Lillian. Thank you for making your vlog for us. Would you mind sharing tips on how native Mandarin speakers can improve their English speaking skills? Thank You, Lillian. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you to ACTUALLY sharing some of the things you do. A lot of these "Day in the life" vids don't share any of the work and it makes it almost pointless when sharing their title.
