- Bookbinding has a very long history. Part of that history is the finishing press. Today we make our variation of one, a very useful tool in binding a book.
You want one? We sell them in our Etsy shop!

Man, I really wish you guys still had these for sale. I messaged and was told that some were coming made from birch plywood...but it looks awesome in the solid walnut.
Thank you! We’ll be back at it soon.
I love how you made your own quartersawn Walnut.
I’d like to say that was my intent with this method. But the truth is this seemed to be the best way to get the dimensions I wanted without a bandsaw. I’m ok with pretending it was for making quartersawn lumber though 😉
Beautiful build, thank you for sharing. Looks simple, but as everything "simple" in the woodworking field, demands quite an amount of work and knowledge.
Thank you! And sometimes simple is most beautiful.
Knock knock! You guys still there? Would love to see another book project!
Working on one as we speak :) we’ve been so busy with the presses that we not had much spare time to make a book.
Our shop foreman is from Seattle. Every morning he arrives at the shop in shorts and Birkenstocks. He sits in his car and changes into closed toe shoes a la Mr. Rogers style, goes in to work and repeats the process in reverse before driving home at the end of the day.
You got to have closed toe shoes in the shop for safety. Them’s the rules.
I once wore flip flops while wood working. It resulted in a trip to the ER, an exploded big toe, surgery, and a lack of feeling in my foot. To be honest I was being a bit careless though. 🤷
On a more pleasant note. The press is a beauty! Nice work.
Ooof. That sounds like a real bad time! Thanks for the comment!
Great job, thank you for sharing! What are the dimensions? What kind of bolts did you use? Thank you for your help!👋🙏
Thanks! Each plank is 20”x5.5”x1.5”. Here is the hardware I used: amzn.to/3LIpE9U. It’s not always in stock so you may want to get it while you can 😊
@@TheFridayForge Thank you for the quick and detailed reply! Very useful!
any problems with sticking? im afraid to put any kind of finish on the "working side" of any book tools i make for fear of it getting soft and sticking.
Yeah, I had the same concern when I was thinking about how to finish this. I’ve found the polyurethane to not stick at all though. It dries really hard.
Where did you get those screws and wing nuts?
Just on Amazon: amzn.to/3B6RCKe. They sell out sometimes so you probably wanna get them while you can
I'd love to know where to buy those Wing nuts
Very nice work
Isn’t it awesome? A company called Taytools sells them. I try to buy directly from their website but it usually gives me problems. But they sell on Amazon: amzn.to/3PHovl4
Added it to the description as well. Thanks!
Your press awesome? Yes it was neat watching you build this. Reminds me of Dad who's been gone for a couple years now. I have his tools and would like to try my hands at making something similar. I got three lessons from him before he died. Thanks so much for your knowledge and willingness to share. Hope your Easter is special this year.
Oh sorry I didn’t mean to sound like I was tooting my own horn! I meant isn’t the hardware nice lol. That’s nice about your dad. I often think of my dad and grandpa when I do woodworking. Thanks for the comments 😊
I didn't take it that way tho. I thought the press was awesome. I just thought you were pumped for your press.
What is the purpose of those shoulders?
Oh I forgot to show in the vid 🤦♂️. It’s so that you can flip the press over and use the flat side as kind of a mini lying press. I’llused it with a chisel sometimes to trim a text block.
@@TheFridayForge thank you! Nice work btw
lol, i know the shorts and flip flops comment was aimed at me!!
😉
