  • Game: Castlevania ReVamped
    Author: LV.4 GAMES
    Platform: PC
    Completed: March 16, 2024
    Rules: Complete the "15% items or less" challenge but go beyond that by beating the game while collecting as few items as possible (12%) with 100% map exploration and full bestiary completed. A "minimalist" run.
    The developer's official trailer for the game can be found here, with a link to the download in the description of his video:
    • Castlevania ReVamped -...
    This is a fan-made Castlevania game in the Metroidvania style that focuses heavily on the events of the first Castlevania for the NES, but in a much more expanded and modern manner. The game has four different rewards depending on how you complete the game...one is awarded upon beating the game, one is awarded if you beat the game with 100% completion, one is awarded if you beat the game in under two hours, and one is awarded if you beat the game with 15% item collection or less. After completing the first three I decided to go for the fourth. There are 100 items in this game consisting of 12 mandatory main items, 20 health upgrades, 50 heart upgrades, and 18 cards. Each one of those adds 1% to your completion total which reaches 100% if you collect them all. Map exploration and filling out the bestiary do not count towards your completion rate at all, only the items collected. To meet the goal you're supposed to complete the game with 15% or less of a completion rate, meaning that after collecting the mandatory 12 items you have three more that you can choose from, whether it's health upgrades, heart upgrades, and/or cards. But why do that? Might as well do a minimalist run and keep it at the bare minimum of 12%, only collecting the 12 mandatory items and nothing more. Oh and fill out the entire map and bestiary for good measure while you're at it.
    Highlights:
    14 minutes, 45 seconds - If you tap the direction quickly then Simon will do this lovely slow walk. This changes nothing.
    1 hour, 5 minutes, 25 seconds - Cthulhu is many magnitudes more difficult than any other part of this challenge. I actually completed this challenge the other day but my time was about two hours longer and those two hours were all spent fighting Cthulhu over and over again. I wasn't happy that my video was over four hours long and about half of it was losing at Cthulhu a million times so I decided to restart and try again. Then OBS (my video recording software) crashed part of the way through my next run, and then the game itself crashed part of the way through the next run, and in the next run shortly before Cthulhu I accidentally grabbed a heart upgrade and had to restart again. Anyways, this boss is really difficult in a 12% run. If anyone knows a better strategy than what I was doing then please let me know.
    1 hour, 34 minutes, 20 seconds - The spiked boots are the final mandatory item so I decided to explore all of the remaining parts of the map at this point to fill it all out.
    1 hour, 54 minutes - This room is amazing. Bask in its glory.
    1 hour, 55 minutes, 35 seconds - This mirror is a lot of fun as it reflects everything, even your menus.
    2 hours, 9 minutes, 5 seconds - One final review...12% item collection, no health or heart upgrades, no cards, and the full bestiary is completed (except Dracula but that will be shown a bit later in the video once I've fought him).
    Timestamps:
    Phantom Bat - 1:40
    Golem - 8:50
    Medusa - 15:05
    Mummy Man - 21:30
    The Creature - 36:15
    Mirror Monster - 48:05
    Granfalloon - 55:45
    Cthulhu - 1:05:25
    The Grim Reaper - 1:56:15
    Dark Lord Dracula - 2:10:10
    Final thoughts:
    Generally I only try these sorts of difficult challenges on games that I really enjoy and this was no exception. LV.4 GAMES did a fantastic job here and I recommend this game to anyone who enjoys the Metroidvania styled Castlevania games, or even the original NES game. Actually, even if you dislike the original or haven't played it, play this game!
    There's also a boss rush to go for!

    Incidentally if you complete the 15% challenge and the 2 hour challenge at the same time, it credits you for both, but you only see one ending.

    • @subledger.
      @subledger.  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh really? So it doesn't show both ending pictures even though it gives them both to you in the gallery? I've never gotten the 15% and sub-2 hour ones done in the same run before.

    • @adamb89
      @adamb89 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@subledger. Yup exactly, it only shows one at the end but they both pop in the gallery. It's basically all in the bosses and heart management, since you can blitz the levels and ignore enemies. Get the cardiac strike card and you heart-up in the middle of boss fights easily. Laurels and the heavy boot card are great for no-selling your way through a stage too, just plow through, tank the hit, and heal up. I would never try to attempt it with a minimal 12% though! That doesn't sound like fun.

      @@adamb89 Ah I see now! I never noticed until now but even in my 100% sub-2 hour playthrough it does the same thing...it shows only one ending picture but actually unlocks all three in the gallery that were achieved in the run. Interesting. I enjoy these little nuances like that. Now that version 1.1.1 is out I should give the 15% playthrough a try. The 12% playthrough was maddening (mainly at Cthulhu) but a 15% seems like a lot of fun using the Cardiac Strike Card, Healing Strike Card, and maybe Heavy Boots Card if going for the sub-2 hours. Thanks for watching and for the interesting info!

      @@subledger. Death was the guy that was my particular pain in the ass. Something about his pattern it just took me forever to learn to dance with. Boss Rush mode is great practice--if you can knock that out in one life, you've got a 15% 2-hour run practically in the bag already. (typo edit)

      @@adamb89 Oh yeah he can be brutal, but I really like the fight. I'm working on an overly lengthy video walkthrough of this game and figured out his pattern in the process. Not sure what to call the moves but I'm pretty sure he always follows this pattern:
      1. Chase you around the screen
      2. Dash across the screen (six dashes if regular health, ten if red health)
      3. That Castlevania 4 big sickle/scythe toss
      4. Circular sickle attack
      5. Downward slam
      6. Sickle rain
      7. Random
      Depending on where the random choice lands, he will continue the pattern accordingly.

    Good god, this is just outright impressive, and there are just some parts within the game that make the minimalist run so grade-A BS, especially the fight with Cthulhu, which was my least favorite fight of the bosses, second being Death. Practically no cooldowns, huge projectiles with large hitboxes that make them almost impossible to dodge, and just goes all over the place. I only managed to beat Cthulhu by spamming the hell out of the Rosary along with Flame Whip. Godspeed to you for getting a minimalist run of 12%, my guy. I love this game, but MAN does it need some more tweaking with certain bosses, especially Cthulhu. Dunno if I'll ever attempt a Minimalist run myself lol.

    • @subledger.
      @subledger.  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Maaaaan that Cthulhu fight is nuts in a 12% run. This video shows me beating him in about 30 minutes worth of attempts but I spent actual hours of fighting this guy in previous scrapped attempts. I decided that I didn't want to release a 4 hour long video where 2 hours of it was just me getting killed at Cthulhu over and over so if I took too long to beat him then I'd reset and restart the run. The first time I beat Cthulhu I also used the rosary, but in a 12% run you don't have enough hearts to even get one use out of it. For Death, he actually has a pattern that I wrote down that might be helpful. I'm not the developer and he could patch the game to change it at any time but for now I discovered this pattern:
      1. Death chases you
      2. Death dashes across the screen (5 dashes if his health is not red, 10 if it's red)
      3. Death does his Super Castlevania 4 scythe toss move
      4. Death does his circular scythe spread-shot move
      5. Death slams down at you
      6. Death does his scythe rain move
      7. Random
      For that random one, Death will perform any of the above six maneuvers, and then the cycle will continue per the order of the list. If his random move happens to be the scythe rain then his next move will be another random one so it gets a bit tricky there. Good luck if you ever give the minimalist run a try, and thanks for watching!

    Damn, i was hoping i finally found a video that showed off the full bestiary, unfortunately, still no videos nor websites have that documented yet...

    • @subledger.
      @subledger.  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Aw man I actually considered showing off the full bestiary in the "100% under two hours" video but I thought it would take too long having to click on each one and scroll down each description while giving the viewers enough time to read them all, especially since most people probably wouldn't care. I showed that I had all fifty entries (and the bosses) but didn't actually open them all. I suppose I could make a separate video showing the full descriptions in the bestiary if that would be useful for people. I'm currently working on a "walkthrough" type video for Castlevania ReVamped as well so I wonder if it would make sense to put at the end of that one too.
      What does everyone think? Would anyone be interested in a separate video with just the bestiary?

      @subledger.  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey thanks! I appreciate it. Congratulations on the sub-2 hour 100% run...that's a tough one as well! That challenge definitely helped prepare me for this one. The actual low% reward in the game is for beating it with a 15% or lower collection rate though so you could actually get the reward by doing what I did here and also picking up an additional three upgrades (any combination of health, heart, or card you want). Those additional three can make it quite a bit easier on you. Anything to make that Cthulhu fight go more smoothly is certainly welcome. Thanks for watching!

      @@Chaunce-px2lj The rewards will be in the gallery, accessed at the screen where you start or load a game. Basically there are four images you can unlock if you complete the challenges they require (beating the game, beating the game with 100% item collection, beating the game in under two hours, and beating the game with 15% item collection or less). There's also the Boss Rush mode that is either unlocked when you beat the game, or maybe when you beat the game with 100% item collection. A pretty good run. And I definitely feel your pain on the Cthulhu boss. The trip to it + the battle need a definite tweak to account for low % runs.
    BTW the Drac battle would have been easier if you used the ice whip for the first part. Bible makes both parts trivial too if used right. Cross helps with legion too when it comes to the enemies he spawns that are too low to whip initially.

    • @subledger.
      @subledger.  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! That 12% Cthulhu battle was probably one of the hardest boss challenges I've ever done, aside from maybe defeating Thunderbird in Zelda 2 at level 1-1-1 (had to hack the game to disallow any experience gains, meaning the boss takes 96 hits and if you get hit a second time you die). Maybe there was an easier way to handle this guy but not shown in this video were hours of attempts and restarting my run before finally getting this playthrough that I was happy enough with. I completed the 12% run before this, but the playthrough had something like 1.5 hours worth of failed Cthulhu fights in it so I wasn't really happy with the video. Unless there's something I don't know, you need a certain level of skill but also have to hope that the boss doesn't put you in any random "undodgeable" situations, which he tends to do with his projectiles.
      Regarding the Dracula battle, I never really experimented with the ice whip but it looked to me like all of the whips did the same amount of damage to him so I chose for the quickest one (thunder whip) but maybe I missed something. I chose the bible as my subweapon because I never really found a solid way to destroy or protect against his purplish attack with the homing projectiles so I'd just bible my way through it. Plus it was really useful against his second form to protect against projectiles and get some good whipping time in. If I had more than 15 hearts I would have used it much more often in the fight, and in a non-12% run I bet the powered-up bible is amazing there (wasn't allowed to use it in this run). But now that I think of it, I bet you can use the bible at any of his attacks and get at least two hits in on him.
      You're totally right about the Legion/Granfalloon fight. I tried the knife and found that it flies right over the low enemies but the cross/boomerang hits them and pretty much clears the entire floor if you throw it the right way and then jump over it to let it go across the screen.
      Thanks for watching and thanks for the tips by the way! I'm considering putting another video together that outlines some strategies to getting through the game normally so any comments about methods/tricks that work well are definitely appreciated.

      @@subledger. Yeah it is legit broken.
      BTW found a helpful bug: apparently having the card equipped that removes knockback when you kill a boss always awards you the no hit bonus.
      I did get the bonus on the first 3 bosses, legit without getting hit before discovering this. Not sure if that affects it as I didn't run any tests.

    • @subledger.
      @subledger.  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@SOTNHacked Now THAT is an interesting discovery. I didn't play around with that card too much but now I want to check it out. If it's that straight forward then I suppose it could be used to get a few extra bucks after each boss since a damageless fight rewards you with $1,500 (I think they all do), although I find that farming Stone Men right before the screen where you fight the mummy bosses is pretty quick, especially with the Cursed Card equipped and the Flame Whip if you want to be extra safe and come back later. Thanks for mentioning this!
      Congrats on the legit no hit bonuses by the way. That mummy one can be tough!

      Yeah you're right. I almost called it that but I didn't want people to think that it was simply the "low%" objective that the game gives you of completing it with 15% or less since this was specifically supposed to be the absolute lowest you can do and not just a 15% run. That doesn't change the fact that you're right about the name though (unless we somehow learn that less than 12% is possible). Thanks for watching!

      Castlevania 1/2/3/4 were slow and clunky games, but for their era they were damn good gothic horror. The problem was the jumping mechanics in most of them were stiff and unresponsive. 4 had the best whip movement controls, but it was still flawed.
      Castlevania Rondo of Blood/X had more stuff, less whip control, but it was slow too.
      Symphony of the Night was the best of the franchise and it was faster, more fluid, everything had purpose.
      This is a new time with new less clunky mechanics and I'm all for it.

    • @subledger.
      @subledger.  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's definitely a faster paced game with more modern styled fluid controls so it might not be for everyone who's into the more pure Castlevania pacing and control scheme. I had a really good time with it though. By the way, you have some great game challenge videos on your channel. It reminded me that I still haven't attempted a deathless Castlevania 3 playthrough yet and that I still need to revisit Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth. Thanks for watching!

      @@BrianVaughnVA Out of all of the games you mentioned I'd say that this one controls the closest to Symphony of the Night (of course the game style is similar as well). It doesn't have the clunkiness of the first several Castlevania games but the controls were so fluid and responsive that after taking a few minutes to get used to them I never really thought about them again, which is a good sign that they work. If you're a fan of these types of mechanics then I'd say that you would definitely enjoy this game. Of course, there are some rather good older styled Castlevania hacks out there as well.
