  • The unusually warm late winter weather gave me a good excuse to explore some cool spillways in hopes of finding some big pre-spawn fish. Walleye and Pike were the goal and we found some real quality fish!

      It's like a fresh start every time the ice comes off each spring. We had a very warm winter down here in the states and the ice came off about 1 month early at least. Lockport sounds fun. I hope to get up there and try it one day. Good luck!

    Bro congrats on the 10k subs! Late comment but well needed..that walleye was a monster. That's a nice Spillway that's seen better days! I bet it's better when the water is higher!

      Thanks, it's been fun. It was nice to get that walleye at a spillway where I sometimes struggle. The low water levels are a little depressing. If we don't get high water during spring I can't imagine how low the water will be once we get to Sept. and Oct.

      @@BackroadsAngling Well, you'd be surprised but the La Nina phenomenon is starting to come back strong meaning we'll get more rain soon. Just research it and you'll know what I mean. I'm not worried much but the low water right now!

      Ya, I think so. There used to be a bunch of retired guys that I would see in the mornings down there. They have a lot of secrets for this spot. More flow would help both of these spillways a lot right now (as can be said for most spillways in our area). Thank you!

      That's the beauty of editing. I can act like some of the dinks didn't even happen. I think it was my biggest walleye and definitely my biggest pike so PBs x 2. I'll take that for sure. Thanks for all your support!

    I prefer being up high both there and irp. Throw a little heavier jig and must have a BRIDGE/DROP net!

    The bite on northern was good up above the dam couple weeks ago

      Ya, I could tell something was up when I peeked over the dam and there were people everywhere on both sides. That's when I decided to head for some solitude downstream.

      @BackroadsAngling  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! This spillway is fun when the white bass and crappie come in. The last few years it seems like they have been smaller than usual but hopefully another year of growth will help this year.

    Hey Brother, The pike goal of this video was the spillway just down the street from me. Next time your in this area I can take you to a spot to put you on some monster pike and walleye not far from the spillway. We used to get a lot of huge pike below the dam there but since we haven't gotten a good spring flood the big females haven't come up stream. I normally release all the fish I catch below and let them go above the dam.

    • @BackroadsAngling
      @BackroadsAngling  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'll have to hit you up next time I'm in the area. I tried going above the dam but there were people all over the place so I went downstream in hopes of escaping the crowds. I can't blame them. It was about 75F in February so everyone had the same idea as me. Thanks for the input!

    Great video. Congrats on the 10k. I have yet to catch a pike, but I'd like to. What kind of leader are you using?

    • @BackroadsAngling
      @BackroadsAngling  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! I use AFW Surflon Micro Supreme Nylon Coated 7x7 Stainless Steel Leader. Head to our northern rivers for pike. If you search around you'll run into some pretty soon. From my limited experience they like to get back into the thickest fallen trees and ambush from there. I'll see you out there - trout pond stocking on March 21.

    • @Bleda412
      @Bleda412 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BackroadsAngling I did not know that they would stock the pond again. Thanks for telling me. I'll be there!!! Thanks for the pike info too.
      Fin and Feather will have a sale starting Thursday. 20% for rods, possibly less for reels, and 20% for tackle. I didn't quite hear what the salesman said, but I think it might only be 10% for waders. Your videos inspired me to get into the creek, and I got so addicted that I'd like to be able to wade in colder weather.

    • @BackroadsAngling
      @BackroadsAngling  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, they stock it fall and spring. Sounds like a nice time to stock up at Fin and Feather. The waders will come in handy in a lot of situations. As low as the river has been the last few years you can use your waders to get to some sneaky spots.

      @BackroadsAngling I've caught alot of northern and walleye in there as well as bass, carp, bluegill, turtles, etc. Most people fish from the bridge. I fish from the sides. There are some big catfish in there too. I will probably bring a catrod with some cut bait this year.
