- I decided to wonder around and try some less pressured river spots. I ended up finding 9 different species of fish including walleye, wipers, and a bunch of other stuff. It was constant action in a place that I did not expect.

Being able to land that many species is impressive. Doing it in the cold like that is even crazier.
Ya I wasn't expecting much to be honest. I guess it just shows you never know when a hot bite my turn on. Thank you!
I don't think Ive ever heard someone say "dog gone it" for catching a nice wiper before 😂. Great multispecies action!
Ya, a strange reaction to catching a wiper. I really wanted that massive PB walleye. It says something about the way the river has been fishing the last year or so when a 6lb wiper is just a consolation prize. Thanks for watching!
That wiper with that beautiful morning skyline was great. Great introduction to 2024. Keep it coming!
I agree, there was one sunrise that was bright red and the wiper complimented the view nicely. Thanks for the support!
All of your content rocks, but i think your multispecies episodes are my favorite. Keep up the great work, as usual.
Thanks, I'm glad to know that. I just lost a huge fish right at my feet this morning so it's nice to come home to some nice comments while licking my wounds.
The carp looked heavy, big fish threaten your hook up? Great hearing you again
Yes they get very big. It is an asian carp. They are invasive and they reproduce very quickly. They can out compete the native fish which is a big problem.
nice bundle to fish :D great catches
Thank you!
Whenever I fish either of those spots it’s hit or miss I feel like but it’s usually good for catfish in the summer
I agree, it's not always productive. I've always thought of it as a good place to catch giant drum.
They should call that section of river the kitchen sink because you caught just about everything but the sink. It is awesome to see so many different species willing to bite at that time of year.
I agree, I think if I fished long enough I could probably catch most of the species that inhabit that river right there in that section. I'm glad they are still biting despite the cold weather we have been having! Thank you!
Nice one man. I'm glad im not the only one that fishes on lunch breaks haha
Thanks, it gives us something to look forward to in the middle of the day. The problem is I usually end up saying "1 more cast" for 15 min and I'm late getting back.
@@BackroadsAngling haha you are not alone
Good stuff as always. Hopefully I'll be fishing with you soon!
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Great video! Great to still see you out and fishing. It was fun fishing with you the other day!
Thanks, it was fun to fish with you!
@@BackroadsAngling I guess you're not the only with battle scars today lost a wiper that wasn't on film then lost one on film that was even bigger
Awesome work!!! another great video! Our rivers over in Des moines are raging high right now..
Thanks! I've heard the DM river is blown out. We need some of that flow over here. We are still around record low levels for this time of year.
This pool 2?
Is this the same water you fish often, I see a spillway in the background?
Yes
Looks like a ways down from these dams where the river slows down are pretty good spots? I am relatively new to fishing dams. I am in cedar rapids.
I get the feeling they want to stay away from the spillway and all the current when it's cold to save energy so they settle downstream in deep slow water. Once it warms up they move to the faster current to find baitfish and feed up for the spawn.
@@BackroadsAngling yeah I need to find some deep spots downstream. Looks like it's going to warm up soon though!
I went to the pond a couple times, even Friday. It looks like catching trout has been slower than last fall. I was watching one of your older creek fishing videos. In one of the videos, you promised to do a catfish catch and cook. I'm wondering just for my reference, do you think it is a good idea to eat fish out of that creek? I know E. coli is a problem in that body of water, but the DNR hasn't issued an advisory.
I've only made it out to the trout pond once but my kids got impatient after 20 min so we left. I think the fish is fine to eat in moderation in all our local bodies of water. In general the water quality in our rivers and lakes is pretty bad with E. coli, nitrates, blue-green algae etc. at high levels but even so a little fish every now and then shouldn't be a problem.
Great video! Man that carp was enormous! Too bad they are around. Has it been pretty recent since they've moved in?
Thanks, this year is the first year I've snagged one and I've snagged about 5 or 6 in the last couple weeks. I heard of a few around in previous years but this year is way worse. It doesn't bode well for the river.
Goood
Thanks!
what time of day is this taken?
Morning and midday
