As a lifelong Christie fan - and having undertaken a pilgrimage to travel to all the places mentioned in her novels (which I completed on my 60th birthday) - I do think she missed a trick not propelling the wonderful Ariadne Oliver to fictional fame. What a spirited sleuth she would have made, in my book!
but ariadne was a parody of agatha at her most unperceptive, conceited self-deceived. Greek for 'good' agatha. agapA, love of all, wonder. read most christies several times, in 60s. reread some still.
What better actress to portray Agatha Christie than someone who appears so frequently not only in Poirot and miss Marple but her own little detective whodunnit! Perfection!
This was released in 1987. The series with David Suchet in it didn’t start until 1989. Comparing them is ridiculous. Ian Holm did an excellent job under the circumstances. It's a low budget, made for TV movie. I found it delightful.
I love the confrontation between Poirot and Christie. She explained why she killed him off. She did not want other writers taking him and putting him in ridiculous productions. Look what they have done to Sherlock Holmes.
How fabulous! I had never even heard of this fictional meeting of the creator and her creation! I have never read 'Curtain' and may never; or, at least not until my own end is imminent. I simply can't bear to picture Poirot not being in this world any longer, to bring me endless joy and entertainment. I do know that Agatha wrote the book (along with the last 'Marple' case) as the noted 'nest egg' for her daughter Rosalind in the event that Christie was killed during the war. Thankfully, that did not happen, for both us ... and Poirot.
I read it when I was in my teens and sobbed for hours - still remember it vividly. I even have the article about Christie’s death which I stuck inside the front cover. It still makes me well up even now - and when I watched the TV version of it, I sobbed all over again.
Very sensitively and imaginatively done. I even began to wonder whether great fictional characters really come back to life! Bravo. All readers of detective or any fiction, and fans of Christie and Poirot, must see it.
When Agatha finally gets rid of Poirot, the NY Times literally put in his obituary! I think it was on the front page. Agatha was sorry she ever created him. Amazing. You have to love how her brain worked. She seriously had distain for a fictional character, that she created!
She was Lady Mallowan . Wife of a professor of Western Asiatic Archaeology at the University of London. I saw them at the Institute of Archaeology in the 1950's
How wonderfully satisfying was that? _I loved it._ I must confess however, that ever since I was so moved by the character Barbie, played by Dame Peggy in *_The Jewel in the Crown,_* it’s very difficult for me to see her as anyone else 😂. Ian Holm on the other hand, was such a chameleon, I’m always transported by any performance of his. Marvellous TV
I'm sorry to say that ''Poirot's Last Case'' is a dreadful ending for such a magnificent character and I deny its very existence. I refuse to believe that he and Ms.Lemon and Captain Hastings haven't bought a couple of connected country estates and Inspector Japp drops by now and then to talk about the latest criminal case in the news. None of them commits suicide or dies in some horrible way and I suggest that they all somehow drift off to sleep at about the same time after a light supper and a cocktail, never to wake up. I don't like the way the movie "Mr. Holmes" offers up an end to that great masterpiece of detection either. I won't acknowledge that he's somehow the cause of an innocent boy's death, that he's reviled and hated by the dead boy's mother, that he's alone facing dementia, or that he's somehow outlived Watson and family. No, no, these are far too dismal and dreary final scenes for such amazing talents and joie de vivre!
I disagree. Poirot making the ultimate sacrifice was a spectacular end for a bigger than life character. In one of the stories Poirot is teasing Hastings and Jap about him being a criminal nobody could catch. And, indeed, after his crime and suicide he had to leave a letter to be opened 6 months later that explained how it all happened. Genius! It was the best Poirot story Christie could have written.
The film is interesting . Peggy Ashcroft and Ian Holm were great actors . However , no other actor does it better than David Suchet ... the #1 Best Hercule Peroit . 🎉😊
This predates David Suchet’s portrayal. While the latter has now become the definitive Poirot, Holm’s moustaches are more correct to Christie’s descriptions, although Suchet does explain why his version was different.
Despite being put together on a limited budget compared to the David Suchet series the acting is superb, the script has some very nice nuances, and this has been made by professionals who, imho, cared considerably for their work. Bravo! BTW, because someone loves chocolate ice cream doesn't make all the other flavors stink.
@@sandraelder1101 I hope so too and in a remastered higher quality! But unfortunately the original film was said to have been damaged or destroyed some time ago. Our only hopes now is perhaps that some foreign tv station has copy of the film somewhere, but it’s not certain
I’ve read every Poirot and Miss Marple many times over and although the premise of this was very interesting, this was one of the strangest and creepiest things I’ve ever seen. There was a malevolence, a darkness, to it that was out of place. And whoever did Poirot’s makeup, should be arrested. It was so awfully fake and it made him look evil and menacing, which, he so clearly, was not. In addition, Poirot would never commit murder, either with a gun or by poisoning. I’m not sure if it was in the writing or the direction, because it certainly wasn’t in the acting, but I really have to say, both Agatha Christie and Hercule Poirot deserved so much better.
A little note of interest is that Nick Evan’s script was approved by Rosalind Hicks, Christie’s own daughter, who was arguably just like her mother when it came to know what was appropriate to do with her works. Thanks to Dr. Mark Aldridge’s research, we also know this film was appreciated by the family, so at the least, there was never any negative feelings from the family
No way… dropping a hand typed manuscript, Willy-Nilly on the floor!?! Do you know how long, and how frustrating, it would be to re-collate that mess? 😂😢
What a great and clever movie. Peggy Ashcroft would have made a great tv Miss Marple instead of Joan Hickson, who is my favorite. Poirot was, of course, irritating and obnoxious. No wonder she wanted to kill him off, as she said in this delightful film. Was Poirot in the books Murder at the Gallop and Murder Most Foul instead of Marple? I really should read her books again,
@@JG-uu1ojPerhaps this story is what we would call a ‘fan film’ nowadays 😂 I personally think she dreamed the whole thing and woke up the next morning and thought to herself ‘yes, I’m definitely killing him off now’ 🫠
This looks like Greenway. Was this filmed there or was it just a set made to look like her holiday home? I was at Greenway just a couple of days ago. This is charming. Although their choice of actor for Poirot was unfortunate.
@@pamelablum6459 As far as one can tell, the exterior shots were not filmed on Greenway House. But I’m not too sure about the interior scenes, it doesn’t seem they filmed it at Greenway, but it looks the production made an effort to atleast resemble it

This is not a bad Poirot, although I have trouble penetrating his accent sometimes when he speaks too quickly. The wig and the mustache are unfortunate, but this program is clearly not a high-budget endeavor. And at least, at the very least, they did not make him so ridiculously fat as they did Suchet, for some reason that has always escaped me. Poirot was not fat in the books, he was a small man with a touch of embonpoint, which means he was slightly pigeon-breasted. Ian Holm's outfit and configuration seem just about right to me. As for the story, well, it to is not bad.
