Thanks for the gear load out! I got the Mountainsmith K9 pack last year after I saw your video. It fits my pitbull great! We've done a few day hikes with it, but no overnighters yet. Maybe this fall!
What a nice video, my friend! Great backpacking equipment review! Enjoyed watching, very useful info. Cheers from Russia, Matty, and welcome to my channel about bushcraft tips and hacks! Kind regards, Yuriy!
Awesome pick up some tips for my dog. She has a lot of the same gear!:) MS pack and Mnt Ridge boots and the rain coat. Be well Matty and Wanda and Trail on!! 🥾🐕
The Mountainsmith pack is such a great pack! I'm always shocked when it never gets mentioned when people are looking for dog packs. I like it a lot better then her Ruffwear pack
I use the older version of that pack for my dog, it doesn't have the smaller compartments on the outside and it seems some of the chest straps might be different. She carries the same water bottles also, booties from Ruffwear, collapsible water bowls from Mountain Smith, a bandanna and a buff. I am definitely going to add the microfiber towel to her kit, seems like a really good idea. I am curious as to what you use for bug repellent for Wanda, I use a slinky style bug repellent bracelet that stretches around my dog's neck to keep the bugs off her head. The flea and tick takes care of the rest. Great vid as always and chock full of great advice and Wanda looks good and ready for some camping!
For bug repellant, I usually just spray some icaridin on her buff, and find that helps keep the mosquitos off of her head. They don't really go after her anywhere else, as she's quite fluffy.
That she does my friend, just went on a little warm up with my pup. I posted a few pics you probably already seen on fb. Well peace out mustache, hope you and her have some boss hikes this season!! Happy trails 👣
Oooo...Wanda's looking good as usual! You can tell she's eager to head out! That Pet Palace is awesome...may have to look into getting one of those for my little Jax! Where would I inquire, Matty??
Well I got nearly 10 days of food for my 70lb Malinois loaded out. Basically 2 full gallon freezer zip locks. With his cut down z rest pad he’s at 14 lbs which lil heavier than wanted but his kibble is very calorie dense at over 700 kcal per cup. What kind of bag did you use to line the saddle bags with? I don’t trust the ziplocks against holes and chafe etc so definitely want to line pack to keep food dry.
I use the water bladders to keep the bags equal in weight. As Gus goes through his food I can add or remove water from a specific side to even things out. Do you not carry a rescue harness for Wanda?
I don't carry a dedicated one no, but I've played around with the straps from my hammock suspension, and her pack, and am easily able to rig up a carry system for her, so I opt to go that route. I've carried her around quite a few times, and shes never wined or had an issue with it, so that's what we go with.
@@MattyOutdoors great idea. Interested to see how those dogs bowls work out! Gus and I have not been out since I came down with covid... better now but it took damn near 3 weeks to get over most of it. Hoping to get back on trail next week....
I think the Bowls will work out well. The only concern I have, is them blowing away when empty, so if I leave one out for a water bowl, may just have to put a rock in it to keep it weighed down. Sorry to hear you went through a bought of covid! We recently had it come through our house, and my fiance spent a few days in hospital.. Thankfully everything is ok now, and she's back to normal.
It was definitely pretty scary to go through.. I was stuck at home in isolation due to being one of her close contacts, so I couldn't leave my house, and she was stuck in there alone, 7.5 months pregnant. Thankfully her and baby are ok, it was a hella stressful few days
Do you carry with you one of those dog slings in case she ever got injured and you have to carry her out? I'm sure you've prepared for a situation like this but you didn't mention anything in the gear video so I figured I'd ask! If you do, which one?
I don't carry a dedicated sling, no. I've got a system for rigging up my hammock suspension, as well as the harness on her pack to create a carry sling, and have carried Wanda around this way plenty of times without issue. She's also a pretty manageable weight, and getting her up onto my shoulders to carry around is easy, so that's another option I could use depending on the situation
I got the pullouts, and am glad I did. I don't use them everytime, but they really only add maybe a few grams of weight, and are nice to have when weather is nice, and I pitch the tarp in porch mode
have you had the mountainsmith buckles come loose on you when your dogs gets wet? I read a bunch of reviews of people complaint that their dogs were getting all tangled up in the straps because the security buckles were constantly popping loose during water crossings.
@@MattyOutdoors I’ve got a golden retriever that can’t resist water so that’s why I asked. I think I’ll need to get some seat bags for the inside of the pouches for sure. I was considering the ruffwear palisades but it’s more than twice the price.
Hi, I'm so sorry for being late. But I have a Bernese Mountain Dog and after school we spend almost the whole time outside hiking and I want to start seriously once I'm old enough. So there are soo many equipments for dogs starting with booties, sweaters, raincoats etc. and I'm a bit confused about what really is necessary. I mean Bernese are made for cold weather and their coat is very thick...so ig a sweater isn't needed. But what about booties and a raincoat? I don't want to buy stuff we won't ever really need but I also want to be prepared. He's only 1.5 years old and we'll have enough time to prepare. It would be cool if someone could give me any advice. Thanks :) -Jacob
Wanda is about 55-60lbs. I won't usually make her carry anything over 10-15lbs. Its recommended to not make a dog carry more than 25% of their body weight
The backpack goes on dad!! Stop teasing.. 🐕🦺 The little taps on shoulder.. so cute
She does the little taps all the time when she wants attention. Sitting on the couch, she'll just paw you in the side of the head
Seriously digging that a steel leash with the soft shackle. Genius!
Always love to see what others are taking for their dog.
There's definitely not enough videos out there covering dog gear for multi day hikes
@@MattyOutdoors I totally agree!
@Love Dogs I will definately check it!
Wanda was studying the map and planning your next hike lol
She's definitely excited to get out!
Great video, thank you for sharing!
thanks for checking it out!
I have the same rubber ducky rain jacket for my cat.
Also, your dog is adorable
your cats got good style!
1:11 Yeah, I get this look every time I touch my packs too... Or the treat pockets. Lmao
She gets super excited when her pack comes out, or if I ask her if she wants to go hiking
I love the raincoat. It’s so cute!
Me too! It packs down super small, and is very light weight too

I love the name Wanda for a dog. She would have loved my old dog, Steve.
I wish I could take credit for her name, but thats what she was named by the rescue we got her from, and just decided to keep it
Wanda is awesome
She really is! :)

I line them with just a plain kitchen garbage bag
What a great dog!👍

doggo....too...cute.....
cute, and well trained.. the perfect combo
Omg so cute!!! She looks A LOT like my dog just a little bigger, what breed is she?
We're actually not sure, she was a rescue. Likely a collie retriever mix
Trying to figure out how to make a lightweight leash like that!
google or youtube, amsteel utility constrictor rope
Any chance you can do a video on how you made that leash?
if you look up UCR hammock suspension, thats all it is. I just made larger loops at the ends
Recommend anything for flies and mosquitoes
Wanda gets the K9 advantix from her vet, and I'll usually spray some picaridin on her buff to keep the mosquitos off her face
have you had the mountainsmith buckles come loose on you when your dogs gets wet? I read a bunch of reviews of people complaint that their dogs were getting all tangled up in the straps because the security buckles were constantly popping loose during water crossings.
I haven't had any issues with the clips loosening. If you were concerned, you could easily put a little wrap of electrical tape over them

a set of booties is never a bad idea. continuous rocky terrain can be rough on a dogs feet.
