    Hi Tyler!
    So I have to wear fire resistant clothing and it’s more for flash high heat fires. So say gasoline flashing or electric flash. They are designed not to shrink and not melt to your skin. So they give you a little more time to get the hell out of there lol!!

      Any 100% cotton item will do well. Polyester is the worst. I had a drifit polyester/nylon long sleeve shirt on, and reached over a camp fire to grab something (I know). That thing shrink wrapped onto my arm and burned the crap out of me. Luckily all I have is a couple tiny scars, but I definitely learned my lesson about plastic based clothing and high heat.

      Fire resistant refers to protecting the wearer from burns, it doesn't mean fire proof.
      The fabric can ignite as long as it's A. Self extinguishing and B. doesn't transfer the heat to the wearer, which the black char does a great job at preventing.

    The smell on the fire resistant clothing that is being given off is due to the fire resistant chemical. To make clothing fire resistant while they are both 100 percent cotton there is a chemical that is used to treat the fabric of the clothing to protect them from burning easily. that chemical is what give them the ability to be fire resistant and give off an odor when its burned or burning. that is the same chemical that is used on sleepwear to make them fire resistant

    For all of you that might not know.
    There is diffrent kind of fire resistant clothing for diffrent application.
    Lets say, a welders cloths are not in the same category as a firefighter or race car driver.
    The fire resistance of the clothing in the video is probably the kind that will take a fast burst of flame, for exampel when you remove a locked bolt with an angle grinder where a car with a fuel leak stood. That kind of burst of flame.
    A concistent high temp will burn off the fire restiant chemicals.
    There is also a big diffrence between flame retardant and flame resisting.
    Whats used in the video is so called flame retardant.
    I just used resistant above just cause the point will be easier to make 👍

    Hey Tyler, love your videos (as always), always using the most cutting edge scientific theories and safety methods :) You should put up a shelf or something in the garage and display some of your past "experiments", dummy w an arrow in it, burned up shirt, gross soda flavor bottles, etc. in the background. Love ya, keep up the good work.

    Fire burns a lot faster and stronger when it is climbing up. Maybe your pants caught on fire before because you were standing up and the small flame climbed up your pants making it worse and having it catch on fire, but the experiment you did with the angle grinder this time was straight down. Maybe if you ever try again, then have the pants in an upward position that they’d normally be in when someone is standing up and see if that makes a difference. If you light a wood on fire at the bottom it burns a lot better rather than when you light the top of it from what I’ve seen.

    The cotton is treated to be fire resistant. It’s regularly done to items such as cotton webbing and such. It’s also surprisingly affordable to do

    Flint and steel. You hold the knife still and pull the flint. Swap hands basically. The way you are doing it you flick all the sparks away with the knife each strike. If you pull the flint and hold the knife still the sparks all land in a small area, better heat to start a fire 🔥

  • @explodatedfaces
    @explodatedfaces 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting point here; The first category of FR clothing contains things like pure denim and cotton. FR clothing is not designed to prevent an open flame from igniting it, but rather they are intended to prevent fire from an electrical arc or explosion under electrical failure conditions. There are 4 categories as assigned by the NFPA. ANY open flame will ignite all items within all four categories. The big difference being some companies add fire retardants into the clothing, which can come off with repeated washing if they are chemicals. That's a stink you smelled. Basically, if you want even temporary protection from open flames you need the highest level of protection for FR which is pure cotton underwear (full leggings and long sleeve shirt), FR long sleeve shirt and pants, a NOMEX or similar overall or two-part layer, and a flash resistant exterior layer designed to keep intense heat out (the baked potato suit).
    Alternatively, you can also go for an outer layer of bunker gear. That all being said, FR gear is to protect from electrical arcs or explosions *only*, never intended for an open flame.

    • @explodatedfaces
      @explodatedfaces 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also just for anyone who doesn't know, if you use FR gear where it doesn't belong like with welding you might be giving yourself a false sense of security and cause yourself to do a dumb. FR gear is only intended to put more calories between you and the problem. Like a stab vest, the idea isn't that you won't be stabbed but that the knife wont plunge as deep. FR gear does not belong near the business end of a welder or a grinder. FR gear often protects you by melting instead of burning, and you do not want to be the one to have to have a melted plastic surgically removed from your melted skin. There are high quality materials specifically designed to prevent injury for both of these jobs like 100% leather as cows are known for rarely bursting into flames.

    I'm pretty sure the smoke emitted by the flame resistant clothing is an indicator of how it provides flame resistance. It likely is releasing enough carbon to suffocate the flame. Which is why when you went outside the shirt caught fire, the smoke kept getting away while oxygen could move in.
