THE JAW GUY! there's a lot of jaw guys. I call them all jaw guys. The number of crazy jaws in prehistoric fish sparks euphoric levels of joy if I'm bein completely honest. It's so cool.
Hi, big enthusiast of these fish here! You mentioned them often not being given pelvic/anal fins in most art, and the reason for that is that they have several close relatives known from complete bodies (8 or 9 different species!) and none of those have pelvic or anal fins either, and its assumed they all looked similar. They also apparently didnt have claspers, so its a mystery how they reproduced. Love these vids so much!
Also, to answer the top teeth question, they actually did! Their upper teeth were flat and looked a lot like stingray or cownose ray tooth plates, and as the mouth shut the whorl passed across them. They seem to have served to chew and process food, with the backwards facing teeth pulling it a little further into the mouth each time it opened and closed, but exactly how it worked is just a guess.
OMG! This threw me way back to a school project I did, where we had to research an animal and I made a full felt stuffy of a short beaked common dolphin baha! I would love to see more crafts like this, I adore it. Something you may find fun is I found a creator who used painted paper mache/cardboard to make fridge magnets and flat backed pieces so it looked like they were swimming on her wall/ceiling. You might have fun doing something like that, or I would be just as happy seeing more plushes💜 Edit: I’m fairly certain this is the person. I do believe she has an entire series on TT doing a bunch of different pieces, but here’s one of them th-cam.com/video/qPdumgII9M8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=mMk7UfM5Q3tkNVMT
HOLY BASED YOU ACTUALLY CRAFTED THE HELICOPRION
OH MY GOD DID HE MAKE THE HELICOPRION
So crafty! I'd love to make one myself, Helicoprion is my favorite prehistoric fish. Probably the greatest fish of all time in my humble opinion.
