Kev I understand exactly what your explaining. That is probably the hardest thing about having a saltwater tank. Also, the other point you made on a livestream. Remembering that when topping off the tank due to evaporation...not to add more salt because salt doesn't evaporate. Correct? Lol. Also, I like your clever trick for mixing the salt.( wavemaker).😂 I think that is very clever! Enjoyed watching. I appreciate the time it takes you to make these video's..plus editing. Great job Kev!❤❤❤😊
Kev, for rodi fill speed, if you buy a water pressure pump that would pressurize your water a lot more, the rodi system will be more efficient and will also have less water wasted ratio. =)
@@KaveManAquatics That’s correct, you need the right pressure. But just normal city tap water pressure wont cut it, youll be wasting a lot of water in the process.
Yo kev you can make just about any video great specially going into details about salt water 😆 You already sound like an expert bro anyway another great video
Welcome to the world of saltwater. Very informative video. Everyone has their own method of mixing. Since I only dose Tropic Marin All For Reef I also use their Por Reef Salt. My tank is 45G Reef tank so I only do 5G water changes. Once I mix my salt I usually let it sit for 2 hours before doing the water change. I too also use Hanna checkers. And have my BRS RODI filter. Good luck with your Reef tank 🔥🙏🏼
There’s tests that show if you loose thing in salt keeping it longer than 48 hours and reef crystal is one that doesn’t change much at all. So I’m on reef crystals now with no complaints
Great vids man, maybe i missed it but when you measure on a refractometer you should always start with fresh water first to make sure its calibrated, then check the salinity. Thise things get outta calibrations super easy sometimes. Keep up the great vids man
Tap water works on saltwater tanks , I mixed my salt with what I thought was RODI water from my rodi system only to find out after about two months that my rodi set wasn’t working, my phosphate n calcium were particularly high but the fish was doing just fine
Hell yeah! Have you ever wanted to try the real thing? I get Pacific ocean water that has been sanitized out here in Cali (LAX Aquarium) and man I feel like it makes a difference. There are so many micro elements that get missed with mixes.
Kev. Hate to say it but you made this very confusion for the fresh peeps. If someone asks me how do I mix salt.. I’d simply explain it like this .. aim for 35 ppm. Add more salt to raise salinity .. add more rodi waiter to reduce salinity. People will have to actual do it in order to understand. IMO this is. Doesn’t matter , salt is an expensive hobby when you mess things up, it hurts lmao but it’s a hobby. Cheers bro and keep up with the videos !
I figured my audience would understand the no brainer of "add salt until you get to 35ppt". So instead of wasting time with that I wanted to tell them what I felt was a more important measurement to know.
its best to wait 40sec-1min before checking the level on the refractometer, it has to adjust to the temperature of the water to give an accurate reading
You can actually mix and store your salt a week in advance. It's actually recommend if you have the space to store emergency saltwater. Use a tight fitting lid preferably that comes with the bucket. It'll keep all the parameters in check but check the salt mix first. I use instant Ocean and store buckets of saltwater ahead of time and no issues. I even did it when I went on vacation so when I came back I can do an emergency water change if I needed to. Love your videos bro
When looking around home depot i realized the totes hold way more water than the garbage cans. I got a 78gal tote with float valve on it and takes about two days RO to fill
I have watched your videos on the fluval canister filters and they’re incredibly helpful. But im not a fan of the outflow nozzle that they come with. Are there any other options that are plug and play to replace the nozzle they come with?
Hey Kev great series this!! Can I ask you some advice. I’m setting up a tank for one big clown trigger on his own and would like to know your thoughts on the best bio media to put in my filter? I’ve always used 30ppi Poret foam in my freshwater tanks but heard it will clog to easily on a saltwater set up?
If you're gonna add a protien skimmer you dont need mechanical media at all really. Not even a sock. For bio-media your rock will be more than enough but you could go with the tried and true Seachem Matrix that never fails 😁💪
Wouldn’t adding plain rodi water as top off lower the salinity bc you are adding non salt water? Eventually if you keep adding non salt water to the tank it should lower the salinity right? Or am I missing something
Hi! Sorry that this question is not related to this video but I needed some help. My nitrates are disappearing in my 6 gal Betta tank, it has many plants but like the nitrates are literally almost gone, I’m scared my cycle might crash! What’s happening and what can I do 😩
@@danielreuben5858 In the beginning it should be checked daily due to evaporation. Once you have a good top off system setup it will keep your salinity stable and require less testing.

Saltwater features are far down the road. We want to maximize the freshwater potential before pivoting. But yes, you can note your Salinity test results as a custom input! 😁
Serious question.....Can we use DEAD coral/rocks in a FOWLR tank? The reason I ask is becuase I have collected small dead coral/rocks from different oceans around the world as I've traveled. I'd like to place them in a saltwater tank with a little flag showing what part of the world those rocks come from.......What do you think? Also, what happens if we use fake corals like plastics ones from petco etc? Sorry for my ignorance....
Absolutely, they will once again become "live rock" once your tank establishes itself. And yes you can use fake plastic corals as well. I've seen beautiful tanks with fake coral background inserts.
I think its not so much the tap water the problem is its the Phosphate thats in tap water which could very from source to sorce and all other stuff that might be in there that you and i can't test for, Corals are very sensitive so starting with 0TDS or RODI water you take that unknown out for your self and no one wants to risk a $200 Fish or $500 Coral, Thats my 2 cents iv had same marine tank for years i only do few water changes a year but i dose all ALK,Mag,Calc it needs corals tell me if something not right.
Its really not too much work bro. The only think you have to do is make sure you add freshwater when the salt amount gets too high. Thats all i do. Add fresh water and feed the tank. Thats it. And water changes. ...
Your method is over complicated. My salt bucket says for 10 liters water use 390 g of salt. So you need just a scale … 50L bucket gets 5x390 g of salt to get salinity to 35. You don’t even need to bother to measure the salinity it will be spot on 35 every time.
It’s not hard at all…. I just recently start a 25 gallon saltwater. Currently going through my fishless cycle now, so far all is good. But it seems simple so far
Maybe I'm missing something. Why are you using that 32-gallon trash can to mix your saltwater? You're not going to use half of that water during a water change so are you dumping the remaining water? You said sitting saltwater will have unwanted parameter changes over time. That would be a lot of unused saltwater that is going bad.
A 32 G can is holding roughly 30 g of water. Since its obviously not filmed to the brim. And yes 20% of 150 gallon tank is 30 gallons. None of the water in the can will be unused.

Plants naturally remove nitrates. Your tank is actually very healthy and very clean right now! Nothing to worry about 😁
So is RODI water and Distilled water the same thing?
Not really, but kind of yes. Some use distilled water but you should test and make sure its really 0 TDS. And its gonna cost you more in the long term
