Baby Jackdaw bird found in a bin bag - reared at home.

- Its cries were heard in a bin bag of loft debris - it's now a juvenile, free to fly wherever it chooses - still returning for breakfast, snacks and some 'family' interaction.

What an amazing journey to observe. Grateful for your willingness to help another soul. God bless you, and anyone who reacts the same way to an animal in need. I raised a jackdaw over lockdown too! It's so starnge watching yours progress in the video because ours stares in the window and occasinaly chaps it for food and he also steals pens like your little fella did, especially when i was studying for my pilot exams! Our one was rescued from the taxiway of our local airport though where he was probably an hour away from being victim to a ryanair! He is probably 70% wild these days but does still come home for food and to hang out on our arms if we are in the garden but choses when and where he goes when he likes which is improtant we felt :)
Cheers Andy - extremely rewarding - we think our Jackdaw is still around because we hear the strange chunnering sound it made, it's an odd noise that he/she made, every now and again we hear it from a lone jackdaw we think is him/her, but sadly doesn't seem to visit - good luck with being a pilot.
Ah bless, from what I've gathered the males are more likely to want to be independent and disappear and make their own families. The females become more bonded and are more likely to stick around and stay closer to you even if they make a family of their own. I'm sure if you put food out at a regular time each day in the garden such as some bird seed and a few peanuts and diced cheese, he'll return, (along with the rest of the local bird population too lol).

What a great job you all did for this little bird. Absolutely first class rearing! All that interaction with humans made him much smarter and able to think creatively. I love how big birds still like to be hand fed by their mamas. So sweet. He's adorable and his human family are first class human beings. Thank you! Greetings from California.

It's so great that you got him past the critical stage and strong and healthy enough to be viable. It's heart breaking to put everything you have into trying to help a little guy like that and he doesn't make it, but when you get him to the stage where this one is, there's no feeling in this world like knowing you were able to help him have a fair shot at life.
I've had my share of failures and successes, some of whom are right outside my door now, wanting to be fed.
My hat is off to you all for your efforts, and for the love and care you gave to your little pal. He's probably going to be a friend for life.

I’ve read that it’s the first night that’s determinative, if survives - going to make it.. Mine made it through the first night and day, but on the next night he flew over the rainbow😭
Came here to see if I did something wrong... Compared to those from the video mine was very quiet, barely ever a sound, even when feeding, and one of his legs wasn’t moving at all, was just sitting quietly and peacefully all the time😔 I tell to myself that at least he wasn’t eaten by cats which we have around in an uncountable amount😔
Heart lifting! It is great to know so many people are prepared to invest their time and their emotion into helping animals in desperate need. Thankyou for caring for such a small vulnerable scrap of a thing, it would have been dead in just a few hours without you.

From my understanding, at early age, as long as they're not sleeping, they're eating. Hence why the constant screaming for food.
I know it's adorable when screaming, but it just needs food to grow and go to bed again.
It sure grew quickly too!

I did this with a black bird, I taught her how to look for food , fly , and eventually let her fly outside , at first she would come back and land on my shoulders when i called her,,,eventually she flew to be free,,,one of the most beautiful times of my life,,,later that year she came back to nest in my garden shed. :) :)

I raised a fellow for a month and then took him to a Corvid sanctuary who were able to switch from hand feeding to automatic feeders.
When I first discovered him he was flightless and I would have left him work it out but for the street that had cats in every house, mine included. My cat had just had kittens and so it worked out well with the jackdaw occasionally getting warmth with the kittens inside a flymo box.
My guy is on my TH-cam somewhere (it’s cute but not informative), behind the clutter. His name was Cpt.Jack.
Mine ate kitten pouch foods.
Thank you for saving him/her, I love birds, i have a young macaw who i trained to fly free , carrion crow & seagulls give him a horrible time chasing him, so a very safe place I fly him is one place, on an army base away from the public dog walkers, on the curragh grass plains, there the largest low lying grass lands in Europe so om soooo lucky to have it, & have permission to fly my birds there from the irish defence forces, as long as I avoid flying on days they fly drones im good on those days in summer I can fly after 6, so right where I park theres like an old building, jackdaw nest in it & last week I found one of the chicks out of the nest , it was strange how it happened, so I go there 2c a day...could be there for hours at a time, I've also been feeling the h
Jackdaw there for a year, but they have never come like that day..they all sat on the fence and chattered, there chatting called a chick out of hiding behind a big fence, even if id have seen it before I couldn't have got to it, now u may find this odd but I hear animals taughts, well not just animals, my focus that day was on birds n I heard them ask for help..they trusted me with there babies, n it was a decision not taken lightly by either parent..the male wanted to try me, the mom wanted her baby back in her nest..I couldn't get near the building so that was out..I promised them id look after him and am take him back daily, taught id release him yesterday..he flew straight to the car..I taught..ohh 1st fly mistakes....nope 2nd fly back to the car..I think he'd felt hunger, cold and the dark n didn't like any of it..with me he's spoiled , opens his mouth food is shoved in..no scraps for this boy, I had macaw chick formula so I mix that with veggies n nuts n stuff, & also occasional bit if meat will be offered..he likes easy streat and having a maid..I litteraly just went n turned his bed after a night of pooping ..but I love it all n am happy to do it.. I'm doing it anyway with my macaw chick who was pretty much at the same handfeeding stage this time last yrz plz hit sub in my TH-cam channel, or I upload more on tiktok im @bigbiemacaw or just hit my profile here, I uploaded a jackdaw update but the dam sound was missing, so I may redo it..so mad..but love editing my little flying footage ...❤ from Ireland 🇮🇪 come meet my birds either here or there..

Just to say I have been hand rearing a baby JD for 12 days now and it looks identical to the one you have stating it’s 5 days old. When I saved mine he was bold except for its head and wings which had spikes of quills showing. Also as they nested in my eves of my bedroom I knew when they hatched and it was well over a week old when I found it. The vets also confirmed it’s age at time of finding it stating it to be 1 - 2 weeks old by the sheer size of it and plumage starting to show. So it was just to say that it was not 2 days old when you found it but more like 14+ days at a minimum.

Thank you - he or she did have quite an emotional effect on all of us, we were given a unique insight into the life and behaviour of an animal we normally pass by. We now smile whenever we see other Jackdaws doing their own thing.

i currently have 2 jackdaws rescued from a chimney that was being demolished they were about 2 days old they were rescued and handed to me they are currently outdoors free to go or stay at the mo they fly round the garden and then back into their flight,in the past i have successfully reared and soft released,rooks jays,jackdaws using this method they seem to hang about till the summer ends then off they go to join wild birds
Wow Matt, sounds like you're doing a great job. We keep hoping our Jackdaw would return for a visit, but that's really a human thing, they're off being wild animals and that's very satisfying - we wouldn't really know if he or she did return, unless they interacted with us (got very good at sitting on our head or shoulders).
I rescued a jackdaw yesterday, I think it's about 3 weeks old. It doesn't have any feathers on its back at all. Is that normal? Any advice would be greatly received thank you
Try calling RSPB, or yr local wildlife trust..
My god! He wants to cuddle all the time and he sleeps sitting on people. And he looks in through the window.

Thanks Helena. We're not sure if Blue returns now, none of the Jackdaws we see come and sit on us! We like to think he or she is out there enjoying themselves and busy doing Jackdaw things.

What happened to your Jackdaw? I have a jackdaw at the moment. He is doing really well and loved watching this video with me. Is he still with you or has he moved on? I had a lovely crow baby a couple of years ago who eventually left. Corvids are amazing!
After fledging, our Jackdaw returned for a couple of months for food (we recognised his human interaction). We'll never know what made him stay away but we like to think he's joined a flock of other Jackdaws.

I have a family nesting in my house eaves. Unfortunately I found one dead outside my front door at the weekend and another one today on the floor at teatime. He was alive but really cold. His eyes are still closed so he must be a maximum of around 5 days old. He refused food and water but after a few hours I managed to hunt out worms, slugs and bugs to give him. He had a drink too. He warmed up and has moved his bum outside his little house and bed we made him for a few poos which was great news. I have seen that you used cat/dog food, so as I have house cats (lucky for him when he’s grown up) I thought I might give that a go. Do you have any advice you could pass on please? I really need it. In the early days we had to feed every hour, dawn to dusk, we kept him in a quiet room because as soon as he heard sounds he'd think it was food on its way and start squawking! We made a nest shape in a bucket out of newspaper, with a rim so he could lift his bum out to poop, which they do instinctively, we layered it with kitchen towel so we could easily pull out and replace the soiled bits. At dusk he would settle and sleep all night, then awake at dawn to be fed. Mushed up boiled egg and mushed dog food went down well but had to drop it in his mouth using plastic surgical type tweezers. It's a full on task to keep them going, but hugely rewarding.

Thank you very much for your swift reply, help and advice. Yes we found out this morning about making a sound in his safe area and the racket was deafening! He is a completely different bird to yesterday and I was convinced he wouldn’t survive the night. He/she is certainly a tough little nut! I was considering putting him in my bedroom as his family is basically living on the other side of my wall in the eaves and have sounded like a pneumatic drill on the go for months now. I could literally have had a number of bonfires from the sticks dropped outside my front door on numerous occasions too. The downside of having him on the other side of its family would be the extra constant racket it would most certainly make and as it’s parents started just before 5am feeding the other/s I would have had an earlier start. I have a very old and very large Ash tree in my garden where I think it’s GG Parents/older family live and have done so for over 10 years after hoofing out my lovely family of squirrels that had resided in the hollow since 1993. They did return in 2019 and have 2 lots of kits but the JD’s were back as soon as they went out roaming. I dare say I will have my work cut out with this little one as I have 2 house cats that follow me every where I go and their ears are certainly pricked now. I have also yet to find out how I found 2 decapitated blue tits one year in my bedroom when my window was open by only 1” or so? Unfortunately they are Bengals which love sitting on top of doors and cupboards and anything up high, so I will now have 3 rather intelligent animals under one roof with one not knowing he is a potential meal in waiting! I have rescued baby squirrels, 15 baby wild rabbits, a pigeon, 4 stray cats amongst many others over the years so here’s hoping this fellow can join my other successes.
Sorry I had to rush off as he just started screaming out again. I wanted to add that I am in a fairly small village and have plenty of hedgerows, trees and wildlife in my garden so he should have a good start once he leaves. I really have no idea how old it is but does look similar to when you first got yours and it’s eyes are still very tightly closed. I’m hoping he will join the others who live in my garden and be accepted once it has fully matured.

Just today I saved a baby from a cat. At the moment he or she eat and now sleeping.
You could be in for some noise when they wake up!
Same here 2 young jackdaws out of the nest very thin scraggy saved them from cats got them in a large dog cage with home made perches feeding them cat food ironically they're calling to other jackdaws in the area hoping to let them go soon
Just found one in the road. Struggling to get it to eat. Pretty much having to force feed it cat food at the moment. It is quite big, fully feathered. Have checked a few vids on YT. Any advice other than cat or dog food? The little guy is not opening its mouth to be fed?!

@@Nodrogem Thanks Gordon, ours is now eating grass hoppers we have to go and catch. Not practical. If you have any other easier alternatives your advice would be appreciated. Everyone says they eat anything. So far anything is proving hard to find.

Hi Jackie - When it was newborn: boiled egg, soft dog food and mushed-up banana (any soft fruit) - progressing to mealworms and bird seed. We used live mealworms to try and teach him to forage.

Hi Diana, after flying off on it's own, it kept returning for several months and continued interacting with us (including sitting on my wife's head). Then stopped, hopefully off making a happy life for itself.
@@Nodrogem that's so cute. Mine only returned once. After that, he went away and i haven't seen him since yesterday morning.

Mashed boiled egg, mashed potato/vegetables, grated cheese, soft dog food, then moved on to live mealworms. I'm sure you'll find better advice online though?

It was unintentionally scooped-up in a pile of debris being cleaned out of a loft space.
