Had to share my flea market find.. I have been collecting red mountain for about a year now because of YOU:) I love restoring them and hanging them on the kitchen wall. I get lots of compliments from visitors. Had all the skillets except htf 4,6,9. Picked up a 9 this morning for $10. Handscribed with underscore. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with people. It had an affect on my life.. I got the disease:) God bless sir

I have one of those Nines with a line under it. I was at my mothers house before she passed and was walking by a plant in the laundry room. I looked down and saw the pot of the plant sitting in a cast iron skillet and asked her if I could have it. She said," sure, that was my moms." Took it home and cleaned it up and have been using it ever since. Didn't really know the value of it or what it was until I started looking into it on the internet, I just knew it was my favorite pan to cook in. I still use it almost every day and love it. I take care of it and am looking forward to passing it down to my kids with the story of how It was their great grandmas and how I saved it from a flower pot.

A young man that I had the pleasure of watching grow up has a friend that gave him several cast iron skillets. I cleaned and reseasoned them a few weeks ago. One was a BSR 5 S with a ghost mark 4, he'll be thrilled to know its value. His buddy would be excited too but in a different way. :)

@@castIroncookware I've been looking as well after seeing his. I wanted to make him an offer back when I was cleaning it but I didn't have the heart and I wouldn't have known what it was actually worth. I'm always looking for anything different. I found a #3 Lodge Monday morning skillet like that, I had no idea what it was at the time. It was priced at $10 with the other #3s so I bought it. Only after I came home did I find out what it actually was.

Thank you sir, I agree completely on season new modern cast iron cookware. I used to strip down new Lodge Cast Iron Cookware and apply my own seasoning. But I found just adding a “Maintenance Seasoning” coat over the Lodge applied seasoning and simply using the peace works just as well. My only regret was slipping and re-seasoning with flaxseed oil. Every piece I did, had to be redone over again because the layers of flaxseed oil seasoning flaked! NEVER happened with regular old Crisco. Then I use a Bee’s Wax & Oil Seasoning for maintenance afterwards. I’ve been using a popular brand with good results, but I’m going to give you Seasoning a try. Best wishes to you and yours….

When I first started collecting, I used flack Seed oil and it produced a wonderful black shiny finish but in the long term it started to flake away. A lot of collectors went the same way as I did and found out the hard way as well. A lot of people now call it flake seed because of the flaking.

I have a hand-scribed #7 with casting flaws on the bottom that make it look as though the piece is cracked; but it isn't cracked, the casting flaws don't affect the pan at all. And for some reason, that #7 will heat up surprisingly fast (for cast iron) and do a great job. Between its relative speed in heating up and the casting flaws, I've nicknamed that pan "Lightning."

I was at a friends house. And I just happened to say I was into cast iron. And his girlfriend said my mom left me a bunch of cast iron. I hate it and refuse to cook with it. It’s just taking up room in my cabinet. If you want them I’ll just give them to you. I said sure I’ll take them. I almost fell out. One was a bermingham stove and range red mountain under lined # 9. Very little rust. There was 7 skillets in all one was a unmarked chicken fryer. One Martin # 7 and a # 8. A # 8 favorite piqua ware smile on it. And a bermingham stove and range # 8 century. And a lodge 3 notch # 5. It actually blew my mind she would just give away the cast iron her mother left her. I still have my mothers old cast iron skillet and I wouldn’t take anything for it.
