G'day it's Steven from Down Under Great work, what a talented young man, if memory serves me correctly Prince played bass in this song. All hail the Queen of Pop!
Yeah this is fantastic. Are you improvising on some stuff? I've accidently watched a video interview of the guy who did this track yesterday and OMFG I never noticed how amazing this bassline actually is. It's like most of the song I believe the bass is actually played on a moog synth, but every now and then the electric bass pops out and does these octave wizardry. It's almost like he's doing bass solos throughout of the second part of the song. It's so amazing and I love what you've done here!
Thanks so much! It is for sure a hidden gem of a bassline! Most of it here is actually what was played by the man himself Guy Pratt except for during the verse where I matched(ish) the vocal part. He really knew what he was doing when he composed this line. Definitely going down in history!
The man is so talented that during one of his lockdown videos he tells the story of how he doesn’t actually remember recording this bass line at all. I found that fascinating. It’s one of the all time great pop bass lines. You play it very well young man!
Thanks very much! I really wanted a “custom” bass so I bought a Harley Benton kit and fully customised it with paint. It could do with better electronics and neck, though!
You NAILED it!! :). I've been a fan of your videos for a while now...as a fellow bassist, I was wondering which Octavor pedal you are using?...sounds fantastic, you've got Guy's vibe down. I love this and what you did on Level 42's "Lessons In Love" :)
Thanks so much! I didn’t actually use an octave pedal, I used a digitech bass synth wah pedal that I’ve had. There’s a setting that has an autowah and an octaver in one effect, where you can turn down the rate of the autowah and essentially remove it. I haven’t got an octave pedal in my arsenal yet.
Thanks! I believe he used a Spector on the recording, not sure which model though. I just played it on a fretless as I though it sounded more like a synth bass when I slid into and out of notes.
If you are looking for fretless tracks check out "Screen Kiss" by Thomas Dolby. Also I think you'll like "Hyperactive" by him, you most probably know it already will give your slapping thumb a workout! - David
Thanks! I got one of those DIY kits from Thomann and put it together. Fully customised it, but it still has some really bad pick ups in it that I really should change. It used to play horribly until I took the frets off
@@iv4nbass Hell yeah, man! Those seem like a cool alternative to buying a bass for more money, and THEN defretting them. I may have to try that when I can afford it. Fretless is so fun though. I had to take a break because I didn't want to keep being a Jaco clone. How long have you been playing?
@@captainshiner42 yeah, you should definitely give a diy kit a go, was a great summer project! I believe I’ve been playing for a bit over 9 years now, lived every second of it!
How do you get that tone? I have a MRX deluxe bass Octave pedal but I can’t get that tone! Do you use a synthesizer too? What am I missing? Great video btw
Thanks! I don’t have an octaver so I had to improvise. I have the digitech bass synth wah which has a sub octave setting with an auto wah effect on the attack, but I figured out if I turned the range nob down it would disappear and become an octaver. I think a lot of the tone is also in the fingers and the bass used.
Sounds good, but all the videos on you tube show this as being played on a fretless when it wasn't.... It was played on a Spector NS2 with an octaver... good job though
G'day it's Steven from Down Under

All hail the Queen of Pop!
Thanks! It’s actually Guy Pratt playing on the recording
I believe he did the distorted guitar at the beginning and maybe elsewhere.
I wonder if Guy P has seen this? great work Man!!
Thanks!
Duuuude, I'm a classic schooled guitarist... I love that you're exploring all music genres. 👍👍
Killing it brother!
Not a Madonna fan either, but this song bangs! Well-played!
Thanks!
I'm a Madonna fan forlife (im 36) and This is my fave , the song + videoclip =🤯 and that was at 1989, nice cover !
Several of her songs have neat basslines. Eg. La Isla Bonita. But this song is just next level
Killed it. Nice bass riff. Good stuff
Very good timing and intonation.. this is NOT easy
Truely great bass line, and well done Sir!!! well played!!
Thank you kindly!

Another truly great fretless cover you did great
Thanks a lot!
Guy Pratt didn’t use a fretless bass to record this. He used his fretted Spector NS4 with Pearl octaver pedal
right on brother!!!!
Felicitaciones! Excelente trabajo. Me encantó! Saludos desde Córdoba, Argentina..
Hey dude! solid playing!
You are so good Ivan !!
It’s Claire! 👍🏻❤️
The Queen
Great job! 🙏👍
Thank you 🙌
Excellent playing and this diy bass sounds amazing! Greetings from Poland.
Hey!!
My roots! 🙏🏻❤️👍🏻
Great playing. That bass looks unreal, congrats on that build. It's one of a kind.
Thanks very much! I really wanted a “custom” bass so I bought a Harley Benton kit and fully customised it with paint. It could do with better electronics and neck, though!
@@iv4nbass A lot of those kits are like that, but it still looks wicked cool and sounds not bad considering it's a kit!
well played. I just restarted playing bass after about ten years
Thanks so much! That’s great to hear you’ve started playing. Sounds like you quit about when I started!
I see fouls but great work son. Good play. For real. Svaka cast sinko, dobro si odsvirao😉🍻
Mwaaaaahhhh.... lovely ❤
It's a colourful one 😮
Fantastic ! Well done sir !

Nice one 👍

Que contrabaixo lindooo
Killin' it great job
Nice!
Thanks!
Excellent. Guy Pratt didn't play this on fretless originally but I'm pretty sure he used an octaver. Your version sounds great 👌🏻

This rocks !! Thanks so much for sharing 👏🏻😃🙌
My pleasure!!

I’ll look into them!
😮😮😮😮 EXPECTACULAR FLACO. MUY BIEN. EL REPERTORIO.
great work! could you please list the effects you are using?
Thanks! I just used my digitech bass synth wah on the octasub setting with the range turned all the way down
Bro, that was sick. I'm loving the homemade fretless. Defretted my first bass after 6 months of playing in 2001. Did you make it from scratch?
Thanks! I got one of those DIY kits from Thomann and put it together. Fully customised it, but it still has some really bad pick ups in it that I really should change. It used to play horribly until I took the frets off

That’s wassup
Great job. I dislike Madonna too but the bassline is great. You look like Theo Von.
Thanks! Personally, I think it’s just the mullet that makes me look like him
I think I’m dead I can barely hear it
