Reminds me of growing up in the 1960 and 70's in Sevenoaks when these units came up from Hastings. The entrance to the tunnel south of Sevenoaks was under our house and you could always tell the Hastings trains from the electric units that ran up from Ashford and East Kent. Often ran as 12 car units (2 x 6 car). The narrow design was to enable them to pass through tunnels south of Tunbridge Wells.

A reminder of the days when they worked the Brighton - Exeter service.
Rare track in the bay platform at Exeter Central.

Did we used to get these on the Reading - Tonbridge line when I was young? Other DMUs I recall had the AEC AV760 or Leyland 0680 hung on the side and the Self-Changing Gears semiautomatic transmission as used on many buses. I remember then double-declutching on the hills around the Pennines. Then there were Deltics . . .

Always great to see footage of this preserved unit as I well recall these in normal service. I just think it very unfortunate that one end has this absolutely awful and totally inappropriate vertical yellow stripe. I wonder who thought this a good idea?

I think that was how it was done in the early years when they were experimenting with various layouts

@@AndreiTupolev You are probably correct. This is just a layout with which I am unfamiliar. In my humble opinion, it doesn't look good on these units. Then again, perhaps that is why this style was not widely adopted and why it is unfamiliar to me!
