    A "bob" is the weight at the end of a pendulum from "bob" something that goes up and down.. Plumb comes from the Latin for Lead (plumbum)

    • @genebowen497
      @genebowen497 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They weren't called "plumbobs" till they were made of lead which as you said plumbum is Latin for lead, humans just adapted the word TO "Plumb bob" cuz it's just human nature I s'pose

    I love the videos and your work is spectacular , but, for all the "easy way to do it" we hear from you. you have spent a lot of time hacking and plating that "un" to comply with same power train your CJ ran. I still say, I would have left the power train in the CJ frame , cut the MJ to fit the frame and if you wanted to build a custom back half, hacked it at the cab wall like you did....

  • @jtoutdoors9346
    @jtoutdoors9346 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    plumb comes from the French word plomb (meaning lead because that’s what they were originally made of) . And a bob is the weight on the end of a pendulum. Therefore, Plumbbob!

  • @Ben-lo7cy

    If you’re in D and crawling wouldn’t it stay in 1st anyway then you could throw it up into reverse. Or did you have it switched just because you have to manually shift that transmission?

    • @bleepinjeep
      @bleepinjeep  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can... but When you're rolling over backwards you dont have much time to look down or count the number of clicks to find reverse. With this style shifter you just shove up until it stops.

    The plumb in plumb-bob is for plumbum, which is Latin for lead.
    A bob is a weight on a string, I think.
    Plumb-bobs were usually made of lead.

    Just a point about pumb bobs when hanging them. At 11:41, the plumb bob is hanging on the back side of the bolt (toward the rear of the car). At 11:57, it looks like the plumb bob is hanging on the front side of the bolt (toward the front of the car). The plumb bobs are off by the diameter of the bolts.

    The word for lead first adopted from Latin root into English was "plumbum", which we get plumber and so on. Many original water pipes were made with lead, so the worker who worked on water pipes was the "plumber". For something to be "plumb" was for it to line up against a string from which hung a weight or "bob". The heaviest and easiest weight to get was lead, so the weight was called the plumb bob, even tho now there is usually no lead in them.

    Its an old tool going way back to the Lead age, before the Iron age, before the steel age which all were prior to the Aluminum and Titium age. When first used they were made from lead. Plumb is Latin for lead. I gues some Frenchman trying to get credit for discovering it was named Bob. Then they swaped the names around to be special. Later someone figured out it doesn't need to made from lead and wala, they're steel now.

    Hey Matt, good video as usual. But one thing...you can do level your axle in both directions like that only if both the axle and the frame are level with each other and with your floor. I have this problem on my xj, it keeps pulling right and can't be readily fixed because the axles are shifted horizontally. I don't know how but there is an inch difference between front and rear. If I check individualy every axle to the frame measures fine including wheelbase on both sides. So I have kind of learned to live with it now., Martin
