There's a lot of airports out there with that triangle runway configuration. Many of them were Army Air Corps training fields, the triangle configuration means that the crosswinds will never be more than 30 degrees off from runway orientation. Makes it easier to train lots of military pilots.
The CRJ200 is a stretched Challenger. Systems and everything are identical. The loud gear retraction you heard is real. Early on in SkyWest's history flying them the pressure bulkhead started developing cracks. The airplane was not intended to be flown 5-6 legs a day. Major mods needed to be done.
I flew from DEC a few times on Air Choice One when they had the EAS contract about 10 years ago, when I was a student in Champaign. Quick and convenient.
I used to live near the Decatur airport so I was eagerly anticipating this video. I used to fly on Air Choice One and Cape Air when they were servicing Decatur. There is absolutely nothing like flying into O’Hare on a little plane. Air choice one would use Terminal five so it was surreal to be on a tiny eight seat plane next to huge jets. I hope that more people see the convenience, free parking, and amenities that the Decatur airport provides. I hope that you will consider doing a video of flying into O’Hare from Quincy, Illinois. I enjoy all your videos and really appreciate you making this one!!! by the way, Gorbachev also flew into the Decatur airport in 1992 to visit ADM. It was a huge deal for Decatur and the Decatur airport!
I've flown out of this airport. My plane was a 12 seat Cessna. Carry on luggage wasn't allowed and they broke one of my knitting looms. They only allowed me my sudoku book and a pen. When my maternal grandparents toured the B-17, I got to sit in the pilot seat. My paternal grandfather takes children on Young Eagles Pilot flights out of this airport. This airport is also practically across the street from a Wal-Mart and a while ago, a plane flew too low and scared a lot of people going in and out of the store.
Fun fact: the CF34-3B1, the exclusive engine of the CRJ-200, has a dispatch reliability rate of 99.99%, making it among the most reliable jet engines of all time 😎
Nice video man. I live about 30 minutes away from the Decatur airport. It’s nice having a local airport but I usually just take the train to Chicago. There’s an Amtrak station in Springfield and round trip tickets to Chicago cost $50-$60 typically. Also, Ronald Regan visiting Decatur in the 80’s is probably the biggest thing that’s ever happened in Decatur, haha!
The IL airports I have flown out of as a former Illinoisan are: Rockford Moline Midway O'Hare Willard Field in Champaign area Danville IL...from long ago Marion Williamson International in Marion I remember boarding the Britt Airways turboprops out of Danville IL for a short flight into O'Hare.
My ticket was to DFW via ORD and DEN. I only paid $248 because of a $100 voucher. Otherwise, ORD-DEC or vice versa would run you about $175-190 on a good day.
1:10 Why are you flying from a Random Elementary School 😁 Decatur gives me New Castle County Airport vibes (though now known as Wilmington Airport) in Wilmington DE the sitdown restaurant in Decatur looks better than the one at ILG Though Wilmington has a bigger waiting area. Wilmington is not an EAS airport and has service with both Avelo and American Eagle. The American Eagle service is operated by Landline using buses.. not sure if it operates airside and you would clear security at Wilmington or just a normal bus to Philly Airport. Avelo offers 7 year round destinations including service to the OTHER Wilmington airport Wilmington NC (ILM)
Decatur...I'm surprised American Eagle hasn't tapped it yet. I mean, they're essentially EAS (no pun intended!) at CMI. On the other hand, I'm surprised United Express hasn't tapped SPI, BMI and some others.
Thhere wouldn't be any EAS service to St Louis now because no airline has a hub there. If AA were to offer service from Decatur, it would be either to O'Hare or DFW.
Air Choice One/Cape Air had EAS service to STL until 2019/20, long after STL was dehubbed. But that's a valid point, no reason to bring it back if connections are better served from ORD.
4:04 so this is one reason I'm a true retrophile and Im not a huge fan of aviations changes and modeling especially because YES the mid and older jets have way more comfortable seating plus I love retro jets anyways

No, the runways were set up to take into account the changing wind conditions. In all likelihood the airport, as many current airports were; was a Training Base set up during WW2. Neophyte airmen just learning to fly weren’t highly trained, aircraft were expensive as was the money to train future airman. Thus to avoid expensive accidents & deaths of airman, runways were set up in the direction of predicted winds.
Hey! It's a long time since I've commented I can give you a suggestion In a video of yours about Air India, you talked about how Air India could bring many scrapped routes back along with some new routes, Zürich and Kuala Lumpur were included in that video, and Air India actually has resumed these routes from Delhi! How about you make another video about the possibilities of the other routes of that video coming back? Another query - do you think United and Delta's routes from Newark and New York to Mumbai will ever come back? They've been gone since 2022 and 2020 respectively... I have another suggestion, you could make another video about Air India establishing a new hub at Bangalore. You could discuss about their plans, they've started flights to London from Bangalore as well! It is Air India's second longest flight from Bangalore after the flight to San Francisco. Along with that, Air India needs to switch Delhi to Tokyo Narita and make it Delhi to Tokyo Haneda because almost all of its Star Alliance partners have switched to Haneda as it is VERY convenient, like Narita is 40 kilometres from Tokyo, so why not fly to Haneda which is just 14 kilometres from Tokyo? Fun fact - Air India served Osaka, Stockholm and Madrid during 2018 and 2019, they canceled all of these services due to "operational reasons"
Good catch on that Aer Lingus taxiing by! A slight mistake on your RT price--should be DEC-ORD, not DEC-DFW! Will be traveling to Milwaukee late next month for a train show--IAH-ORD-MKE with yes, a CRJ-200 for the ORD-MKE segment. What is DEC's longest runway? Surprised it was capable of handling Air Force One for Reagan's visit!
I have a lot more: MLI, Quincy, Marion, Rockford, and Belleville in fact. I don't have plans to fly from any of these primarily because of distance but it would be cool to do that someday.
Its crazy that this video came across my feed because just a few hours ago, I was working N958SW lol
