I have been using the Fairchild compressor effect, built in to the M32 mixer, in live situations. I have, mostly by ear, found settings I like on it for bass and acoustic guitar. This has given me a deeper understanding of the effect. I plan on using it more, the next time I'm behind the desk. thank you.
Thanks so much for this tutorial. I am one of those people who have been using the Fairchild (in almost every mix) and wasn't getting the most out of it which I can now thanks to this tutorial!!
Thx Mike. I've had the Waves version for a few years and never truly understood it; I do now! I've always heard that it can be used just to add harmonics so I'm intrigued to hear the results on my tunes. Thx again.
OWS !!!! What kind of wizardry is this !! Had no clue what the Lat Vert setting was and no idea about the possibilities of this piece of gear. It could be in the manual I reckon. Cheers
Wow! This changed my perception of it completely. I was sort of groping in the dark and playing it by ear, but you make sense of it. I have the Waves emulation, which has less features, but it still rocks
Outstanding Video !!! Thank you so much, I have the Fairchilds but have not been able to get them to perform as I was wanting. You helped me tremendously with your explanation. Thank you, sir.
Another brilliant tutorial! You've become quite adept at these and I appreciate it. I've had this plug-in for years and have rarely used it because I did not understand it. Thanks!
Good Vid Mike! I have just started playing around with the Fairchild plugs. loving it on the MB and Drum Buss. I love what it does. You need to do more vids of you playing guitar. I love them vids. you have a killer guitar tone.
Excellent video! Nice refresher course on the Fairchild! Have you done the Tube Tech CL1B yet? That's my favorite but i fill like there's things i still don't know lol.
A very informative video. I have both the Waves and the UAD versions and have used it mainly on busses. Actually it was turn this knob and then then that knob and go that's sounds ok. But you have made me now zero in and really focus on the various aspects of each knob. Thanks Mike.
Very informative - thank you for this. Love the interplay with the gain reduction and harmonic distortion. Have you ever made a content about using external effects with the Apollo x8 using Ableton? Just starting this journey!
Hi Mike, very interesting and useful video about this compressor that I must admit was a little intimidating to me. Now I can use it knowing exactly what I'm doing, haha thanks!! 🙌❤
Thanks, Mike. Very concise, useful info. I've used 3 different Fairchild plugins , each very close but some unique features on each. I agree with the comment on the beautiful female voice as I've heard you use it in many of your vids. Where can we hear the whole tune at? Great song from what i've heard so far! thanks, SC
I bought the UAD version (not native) based on another TH-cam channel, but never really understood it. I just tweak the knobs until the meters bounce a little. Great explanation!!
Thanks Mike, really helpful. I've always avoided these because I couldn't make head nor tail of them - now I can (although I'd have to keep this video handy!)
Very good explanation. Thank you. I found the practical examples and the measurements the best. I now have a much better understanding of how the compressor works. I would like to see a video in which the EQs are compared and only the aspects that can actually be measured. So, how does Logic's standard EQ filter the signal compared to Neutron, Fabfilter etc.? Is it worth to buy them?
Which of the time constant settings is most used for master bus? And is the tube coloration generally helpful? Is it exciting saturation or transient tempering saturation?
Mike, you have a great, natural style of explaining things. I have always liked the results of a Fairchild on the Mix bus, but never used it because I didn't understand its controls compared to a regular compressor. Your video has given me the knowledge to use a Fairchild plugin now. I found the relationship between the input & threshold controls extremely helpful.
The time constant! Always struggled to understand it. I just tried it with another emulation of the Fairchild, the iOS MixBox “Type 670” and it doesn’t seem to do much.

If you place in the unison slot of the Apollo Solo, it uses all of its dsp power!
It’s very CPU intensive.
The clarity you bought to the attack and release times is very much appreciated ! Fantastic video.Thank you

These succinct plugin deep dives are excellent, I always learn something I didn't know! Hope you keep doing them :)

Awesome! Thank you :)
Thanks for this tutorial. I've often wondered about the Time Constant settings. Much appreciated.
Another great tutorial to help demystify something which, on the face of it, looks quite simple but actually isn't. Thanks. 👍
Thanks Angus. My pleasure :)
Great presentation Mike! You’re my newest audio Guru; thanks!
Thank you! "Guru' might be a stretch, but I'll take it :)
It's such a great tutorial! Such beautiful vocals! The kind that bypasses your ears and goes directly to your heart! Thank you again so very much!
My pleasure thanks :)

Thanks for the video, I am new to using a fairchild plug in and this was very helpful. Thanks!
My pleasure thanks.
Very helpful, thanks and I have been using the Slate plugin for years and wasn't aware of the impact of the threshold relationship/gain relationship
Glad it was helpful :)
Thanks for this, I can now confidently work with this compressor whereas before I just used presets because I didn’t really understand it.
That's awesome! Thank you :)
I really like this video series explaining these types of plugins. They’re very helpful. Thanks. 🙏

Really helpful, so clearly explained, never knew that about the input colouration vs the output lack of colouration!
Thank you for your demo, well explained, much appreciated 👍

Cleared up some of my questions. Good stuff!

Extremely helpful video. Thank you!
wow merci j'aimais ce plugin mais je ne l'utilisait pas vraiment comme il faut maintenant je le comprends mieux merci vraiment beaucoup

a standard compressor with a toaster for the "oh my god what authentic and and warm sound, I feel like I'm recording Led Zepplin"
Bright and clear explenation. Thank you!

Just love that female voice...
I'll tell her, thanks :)

Hello. Does this also apply to the IK media? I’m using that plugin 670 for my voice over and getting mixed results
UAD plugins turn up +1dB gain as soon as you turn them on. they sound like they do something but all it does is turn it up
can you make a video on what people use it for?
The time constant! Always struggled to understand it. I just tried it with another emulation of the Fairchild, the iOS MixBox “Type 670” and it doesn’t seem to do much.
Just a sits on my mix bud adding magic
can i order a piano
It’s infuriating to me that the input/output gain doesn’t change to Lat/Vert. That would make it so much better.
