- Hello! My name is Stick the Eagle (“Stick” for short) and I am currently attempting a thru hike of the Appalachian Trail. I am traveling NOBO from Georgia to Maine. Yes! Get new trekking poles! I get the attachment, but you can’t risk them failing you. Please get new ones.
It's a weird dichotomy. You don't know us but we all feel that you're a best friend. Been watching since your train trip south. As I sit here in my cubicle with a stress fracture from hiking too far to quickly last week, ugh... I (we) really appreciate being able to live the trail through you and watch you grow each day my friend. There is no one on the trail quite like you. But scout camp is something that you need to do. And now even mores with your new experience.
Consider letting us know how Nickels and Frizzel do. If others are like me they are sort of invested in their journey as well through you.
Come back on the trail in a couple months. None of us want this to be the end of seeing a new friend. Stay safe and thank you!!! Oh....and keep the trekking poles you have for the rest of the trail. Just take them apart and clean them well.
Thank you, friend! I definitely have grown in my knowledge of backpacking and love for the mountains on this hike. It has been so so rewarding… and this will not be the last you see of me if you choose to stick around.

Thank you for your commitment to Scouting. I can relate to the Black Flies. They were terrible in June of ‘85 when I did the Presidentials.
You get the same certificate of completion when ever you're able to finish. You will still be a thru hiker. Looking forward to your final 350 and summit!

Awww, this is bittersweet.😢 I know we all really enjoyed our journey with you. It's been quite the adventure, to say the least. Im going to miss your spiritual talks, your positivity, singing, and 12 o'clock tip of the day. But camps gonna be great, and it'll give you some time to heal up and get your body back in shape. We'll be here for whatever you have going on next. It should only take you a few weeks to do 349 if you decide to finish the AT. I heard you might have company if you come back for fall. I bet it is going to be strange not talking to your phone and knowing a bunch of us are there with you❤ Wow, the trail just keeps giving. The scenery, the new friends, the magic.
Have yourself a wonderful time off trail and say hi to Slip and the guys at camp. And probably one of the best things about going home is that your kittys will be so happy you're home.
Oh, and yes, get new poles if you can't jb weld them or something.

Scouts is so meaningful to me too. I love that I can still be involved through summer camp when I am not rooted enough currently to be regularly involved with a local troop.

If’s job comes up, it may not be a thru hike but you’ll still have hiked the entire A.T. But you’ll finish and bet you’ll be doing some more if the Whites in the future. I think I will be doing a lot more of the Whites in the future. They are so beautiful. I’ll just take one day at a time… and see how life goes.

From an old Eagle Scout to a young-man Eagle Scout who doesn’t need my advice. I hope this serves as encouragement and support. The two Scout Laws that have affected me more in relationships in my life have been Trustworthy and Loyal. You are right to do the job you committed too. The young people in the camp are counting on you being there. We will be here when you get back and decide to finish the trail. Have a great summer and help change some lives.

I have really enjoyed following your journey. I totally understand the battle between leaving the trail and heading to BSA camp. I cannot say do or do not continue the trail (I know you are already off) but to stay true to yourself. I can say, it's so much harder to finish something if you pause it, but I love your commitment to the scouts. I'm going to guess from your trail name, you are an Eagle Scout. So much admiration there, I am a mom of an Eagle Scout and know the work that goes into it.

Thought about you yesterday as I was talking to my two nephews that just got back from camp and had such a great time here in North GA! As many have said, the AT isn’t going anywhere. Many videos ago, it was fun when I realized I have the same poles as you ...the red Trail Buddy poles ! I named mine "Peppermint Sticks"
And such a poignant and meaningful juncture ...we learned of Ethan Pond during your journey. My 11 yr old Grandson is my video watch Buddy and his name is Ethan. Special journey!

So so kind. I try to be the best person I can be. Thanks for seeing and affirming that. All the best to you and your grandson and perhaps you will stick around.
I know that everyone is rooting for you to finish this year, even pushing you to. It is your journey, not theirs. Do whatever is best for you. If finishing this year is important to you, then make that your Plan A.
As a guy turning 67 this summer, I can tell you that there is no shame in changing plans, to take on other goals or responsibilities. There is no shame in putting an old goal on the back burner, or scrapping an old plan, to take on a new plan, challenge, opportunity, or obligation. You would equally enjoy finishing it another year or decade, as finishing it now. All you give up to do that, is a bit of bragging rights, a bit of meeting the expectations of others, a bit of innocence about wishing to always complete goals via Plan A.
I'd suggest making a Plan B, C, D, right through Plan Z if needed. Plan X might be to wait until after you start on Social Security and Medicare, to finish it. Then you will always have one additional special thing to look forward to, during your working years.
Completing it in the 2060s, is a much more difficult goal than completing it this year. So, don't view it as giving up, view it as raising the bar you are trying to get over. You have options, young man. None of them are bad, none of them are failure.
Thie finish lline of the AT is arbitrary. People considering it best to finish in one year is arbitrary. Don't let arbitrary things created by others, rule your life. By all means, do the rest of the trail if you wish, but don't feel compelled to by external pressures, or by internal pressures which only came about due to external expectations and definitions of success.

Greetings, Stick! We met you in the parking lot of 17A by the Creamery in NY, while we were on our annual section hike. Congrats on making it part way through the Whites!! You have more guts than I think I have. About 10 miles out from where we met you, on Buchanan Mtn, I fell backwards while climbing a 60 degree angle up the rocks. I hit my head on the rocks and was bleeding. Got to the road, and got help to make it to an Urgent Care where I got patched up. My wife & I did finish our section hike, and got off in Kent, CT. I thought NY was some of the toughest terrain we had come across since Springer Mountain. Anyway, I discovered that I like hiking, but I am not fond of the technical stuff, so I may never do NH or Maine. But our journey has taken us 7 years and 1474 miles. We will see what happens next year. I hope you get to finish in Aug or Sep. I feel God has his hand on you...He has a great future for you, mark my words! I love your positive attitude...I could learn some things from you! (I am 68 years old at present.) Take care my friend, and may the Lord bless you!!! Chief & Zipfizz from Michigan
I remember you and I also remember Buchanan well; it was a tough climb. New York I think is the third hardest state because of the technical climbs. I will say that until Moosilauke in NH, the climbs aren’t too technical. Thanks for your reminder and God bless you too. I am so glad that you are okay.

I think new poles for your return. You need to be able to count on them for your tent and for river crossings. Think about how injured you could be coming down a mountain and having your pole give out when you put your weight on it. Be safe, new poles.

You'll be back. Maybe not this summer or next, but you'll be back. Keep the sticks at home, never throw them away but get new ones to finish the adventure. Sure hope we can get some scout camp videos! As for my journey, it's off to Vermont tomorrow for trail magic number 118.

I am so glad that you are modifying expectations. If you let expectations control your hike, you will be miserable. @@sheridelaney1415 That's good! Some of the gear that I sent home is still in odd places so once I gather everything together again I can do a comprehensive review of everything.
Loved the Spring Finale tagline! So looking forward to the Fall Premier and know that if for some reason it gets cancelled it will be for a very good reason for you future. Can we root for both? A great new opportunity that starts on say Oct 15th?!?!? Anyway, this adventure has been a spectacular success already. So thankful that you decided to capture your journey and have shared it with us. So amazed at how many people are following and truly invested in you, not only as a AT thru-hiker, but as a person. So happy for the friends you have made and look forward to hearing about their summits. And from someone who has truly been with you from the very beginning, it was good to see your emotions on such a significant day. First time I have not seen you 100% excited for camp to start ... but it is for a very good reason. So proud of you and how far you have come ... literally. Get new tips for your poles if you can. I replaced the tips on mine on the AT. If it isn’t possible with the type of poles you have, definitely get new ones. The last miles of the trail continue to be tough like the whites through most of Maine, then you hit the river crossings. You need poles for both.

My journey of thru-hiking the AT is set to begin in late Feb 2025. My journey will be a little more challenging than for most hikers, as I'm visually impaired/legally blind.
