It’s funny how you never realize the authenticity in movies you loved as a child. As kids, we saw Alan running away from Van Pelt because he was being hunted. But as adults, we see a man running away from his biggest fear. A great life lesson this movie teaches is to always face what you’re afraid of because if you don’t, it’ll hold you back from growing as a person. Alan’s biggest fear was his father’s displeasure and criticism. Alan’s father always told him to face his fears because he was being bullied. One thing to note is that the Jumanji game draws its characters from the minds of the players. Van Pelt took the place of Alan’s father, which also explains why they’re both played by the same actor (Jonathan Hyde). You also gotta know that Alan was in the jungle for 26 years and was being hunted every day by Van Pelt which is symbolic of him running away from his father but in another reality. We also see Alan explain to Sarah that Van Pelt sees everything about Alan as being offensive which is symbolic to how his father felt after he found out (in his mind) Alan ran away. It’s only up until Alan finally decides he’s had enough of running that he decides to face his fears.
Another attention to detail is while Alan is telling Van Pelt that he’s not afraid, the dice keeps rolling which signifies that Alan’s fate rested upon his choice to either face his fears or keep running. He was given a second chance to make things right. The dice only stops when Alan acknowledges his father’s teachings which shows that he’s fully matured from his mistakes. The writing is picture perfect because it sends a great message about facing your fears.

We've seen eldritch abominations as monsters, as planets, as viruses or metaphors for madness.
I don't think I've ever seen one disguised as a board game or in the case of the series, an entire plane of reality.
Also, say what you will about Jumanji, it's true to its word. It took back every consequence that its gameplay brought to the world. The entire town went to ruin because Parish lost his son. All of the town's history got affected by Alan getting sucked into the game so Jumanji rectified that.

Same actor, different character. It’s similar to how the same actor plays James Darling and Captain James Hook in Peter Pan musicals. Part of the theme of how the character is afraid of their father’s disapproval.

Inside the title , there’s a man in Jumanji . The curse is being scared of growing up , this antidote is conquering fears from its powers , that’s how you become a man and a lot less than a child .
