The best fashion from this season was the mitchel pattern helmet cover, the new od slant pocket fatigues accessorized with the new M-16 and that wonderful old standby the M1911-A1

At the risk of scorn by someone with a idea of masculinity more archaic than the crazy hats most of the women shown were wearing, I really, really liked this vid, and found it more interesting than the usual wartime film shorts. No doubt that is partly the uncommon nature of it, but it's also because I love how advertising of any period not only is a window, a very honest...uh, window--got my metaphors crossed up there, but so it goes. Anyway, period advertisements not only show the reality of a time and place, but also the aspirations of the people in that time and place, their idealized version of themselves. For example, though the date is only given for this vid as the "early 1960s" in the description, I absolutely, unequivocally, guarantee it was at least filmed before November 1963. Because every woman and girl model in it had some variety of the Jackie Kennedy hairdo--every damn one of them. More insidiously, a great many of the women's outfits were highlighted for offering comfort, "femininity", and either versatility, practicality, or some related synonym. This is a subtle nod to the sometimes impossible expectations placed on housewives of the era: to always look and act fashionably, even while handling all the domestic chores, tending to children, and being the perfect hostess to seemingly a who suburban block of people. And wives were expected to also be frugal, wise consumers. After all, their husbands worked to earn the money, so their contribution to the financial health of the family was to find the best deals, and make her husbands money go as far as possible. Echoes of this social ideal can be heard in the almost incredulous way the low prices for the clothes were announced.
Given all that, I supposed it's not too surprising that in at most five years time, many women would start dressing and acting in a manner that came to be called "counterculture".

Janis Paige is still going strong at 97! In 2017 during the #metoo activism she wrote an article in The Hollywood Reporter regarding how she was sexually harassed back in her era!
