hope you all enjoy this new smaller series! its incredibly easy for me to make videos like this so expect to see more for other games! (dst, minecraft, terraria etc!)
Honestly, the game should have given the player 3-5 of these at the beginning of the game. Lower the level requirement to 1. That way, people see that it does have a valuable use as a time saver and want to actively seek it out.
Some good points here! A couple things that come to my mind though are that 1. like all fertilizers, retaining soil goes away at the end of the season, so sprinklers feel like a better "investment", and 2. the probabilistic nature of the basic retaining soil means you still have to water crops - in order get that "~34.65" crops pre-watered every day, you have to have 104 crops the day before already watered, so if you do this every day, you have to water ~69.33 crops every day, and that kind of feels like more work rather than less. But I think the biggest cost is just the opportunity cost. I haven't done the math, but it feels to me like fertilizing my crops with basic fertilizer to get quality crops is worth more in the early game than having to water them a bit less. When money is tight early in the game, I think I'd much rather spend 2 sap and water my crops 33% more often for a chance at the extra gold rather than spending 2 stone and a little less watering and _not_ getting that chance. Good food for thought though, and good discussion!
ooo thats an amazing way of putting it! might have to do a deep dive into basic fertilizer now too, never thought of the effeciency coming from the side of both energy AND money at the same time, but realistically, your gold per energy used would most likely stay about equal or a bit more, due to the higher quality crops from the basic fertilizer, so youre right! (i think) Thanks so much for the comment, this video was highly experimental especially with it being my first Stardew Valley video ever made, so any feedback and thoughts are greatly appreciated :D
My biggest issue with the Basic Retaining Soil is the fact that with some plants it's kinda hard to see whether they were watered or not. Especially at night - and since it's most beneficial in the early game to first go fishing for Largemouth Bass before anything else (it spawns between 6am and 7pm or sth), it's usually already dark by the time I get to watering 🤷🏼♀️
oh yeah it can be a bit annoying sometimes, although at the very least if you pass out you have some assurance that *some* of your crops will still be watered or just water them during the day (which sucks for energy but its better than a mad dash at night i guess) Thanks for the comment though!
Honestly since coming back to the game been using retaining solid on short term crops just to give me more time to go the mine until I have enough iridium. It’s a solid inbetween because i don’t like to waste resources on the worse sprinklers
now that the cookout kit has been mooved to earlier in progression i actaully did for the chef's bundle lol, tho i derfently could've just donated the items later tbf but eh -w-
ok so one error in your math is your mixing up the sell price with the buy price of some items. So for example you could sell the ingredients for the quality sprinkler for 420 gold but you cant make 105 basic retaining soils for that because you can't buy stone for 2 gold you can only sell it for that. the first year you can buy stone for 20 gold which would mean you could make 10 basic retaining soils and in the second year only 4. which actually makes a good case for why its under utilized and probably just too expensive for the early game when anyone would be using it. I like the premise of the video though good job.
@@Purplex08 oh yeah and it works for comparing relative value and ease in that you can get two stones way easier than 5 gold ore 5 iron ore 3 coal and all the stuff for the furnace.
its really fun! but id wait if i were you, wouldnt want to restart all the way from the beginning right? Especially since when the update does eventually come out on console, youd have to juggle saves from pc to console, or drop one completely (personal experience xD) But in the end the choice is yours! Do what you think is fun, dont let me influence you :D

thats a fantastic idea! wish it was implemented one way or another, or even make the requirement level 2 so that sprinklers have some competition

I got a ton of Basic Retaining Soil while exploring the mine.
I could start using them instead of letting them rot on my chest now.
better to use them than not, its pretty much free water!

yeah, its such an amazing item for only 2 stone and its a great stepping stool until you have enough for sprinklers
So in terms of making and spaming, 2 stones > copper, silver, gold, refined quarts. Thats crazy for a late game item
Also great vid dude❤👍
thanks so much! :D

I wish the the 1.6 update would come out to console soon. I am tempted to go and buy it from my PC 😅
